From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, Capital Campaign: As you know, Phase II of the repaving and beautification project is underway. I would like to thank each one of you for making it possible. Your generosity is seen in concrete (no pun intended!) reality. The Capital Campaign coordinators---terri Ciardella, Sharon Oosterman, and Tammi Grigg---keep plugging away at all the details of this phase of the project. They are so generous with their time and talent. Even though they are busy with their own jobs and families, they give so much of themselves for this project. Hats off to them! Let me pass on the update received from the coordinators: The legacy courtyard demolition began on July 16 th and the lower lot pavement is scheduled to break ground on the 23rd. Please pay attention and respect the construction tape, barricades and signs during the construction. If areas are blocked off do not enter! It is for your safety and for the construction materials to dry properly. This is a temporary inconvenience, one that will surely be worth the beautiful outcome. The profits from the most recent events: Bocce Ball Tournament: $1447. Thank you to Mike & Jeanne Dimech Spring Gala: $6481. Thank you to Sharon DeBono, Kelly Koenig, Francois Camou & the Basque Cultural Center Phil-Am Friendship Day Dinner Dance: $6189. Thank you to Robert & Suzanne Nazario; Romy & Roree Arellano, and the wonderful BLD Team Thank you to all those who lent of their time, talent and treasure to make these events a success! Please come support Wednesday Bingo on July 23 and July 30! All the funds raised at the July Bingo events go toward repaving the property. Live professional entertainment is coming to the Parish Center on Saturday, November 1st. Mark your calendars for Sister Strikes Again! Late Nite Catechism 2. Tickets to go on sale in August. Stay tuned... My visit to Charming Towns: Recently I made short trips to the Monterey Bay and Napa and Sonoma. These historic towns have filled my imagination with a sense of beauty and charm. If it s possible for you, you might want to visit these places again---even if you have been to them before. As you know well, it s always beneficial to do something outside our regular routine. Change of place and scenery is always good for the mind and soul. I was also particularly impressed by the Catholic nature of these places. Even as the East Coast (Jamestown and Plymouth) was influenced by the Pilgrims and Puritans, the West Coast was impacted by the Missions the Franciscan missionaries built. In a lot of the names of places in California you cannot miss the Catholic flavor. Along with faith, the missionaries developed a way of life, culture, and economy. In Carmel, Mission Carlos Borromeo (my patron saint!) was established in 1770. This Mission adds character to the cute town of Carmel with its white sand beaches, delightful houses along Ocean Avenue, and the art galleries. In Sonoma, the last and northern most of the Missions, Mission San Francisco de Solano was established in 1823. Of the 21 Missions, I have visited only 4 of them. A long way to go! The missionary spirit and a sense of adventure of those early Franciscans is part of our heritage. We could be inspired by such heroism and faith to share and shine. Word of God: God would give anything to Solomon, but he asks only for an understanding heart, also translated as a discerning heart. How can a heart understand? We usually think of the heart as a feeling place. That s the insight: we need a heart like Solomon that not only feels but also understands. We need to think and feel in a balanced way so that we can live a life of happiness, despite all sorts of troubles in life. This leads us to the gospel where we are able to apply the discerning heart to figure out what our true treasures are. If we know what our buried treasure is, what our pearl of great price is, we will then be able to go after them. Are these treasures intrinsic or extrinsic? If they are extrinsic, they will express themselves in our search for wealth, fame, and pleasure. If they are intrinsic, we will be guided to deep, intimate, fulfilling relationships, where we learn to love people, not pleasure. If we can discern these things, we will truly be on the right path to contentment and happiness. If not, we ll be drifting and sliding and sleepwalking through life. Jesus wisdom can truly challenge us and lead us to the deep springs of abundant life. Think About It: An egotist is someone who is always me-deep in conversation ---George Goldtrap. Prayer for Generosity: July 31 st is the Feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola. We can meditate on one of his well-known prayers: Dearest Lord, teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve you as you deserve; to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed to wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and not to ask for any reward, save that of knowing that I do your most holy will. Amen. Catholic Joke: Returning home from Faith Formation class, a little girl said how disappointed she was with the class reaction after the day s lesson. We were taught to go into all the world and make disciples of all nations, she said, but we just sat. Your Friend & Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

All Are Invited! The Celebration of the Silver Jubilee of Father Charles Puthota will take place on Sunday, Sept. 7, at the 9:30 a.m. Mass followed by a reception in the Parish Center. Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone will be joining Father Charles in the celebration of the Mass. In order to help the St. Veronica Hospitality Committee best plan for this event, it is requested that those who are interested in attending the reception RSVP to the parish office at 650-588-1455 with their name and the number of people in their party. Father Charles was ordained to the priesthood on August 19, 1989. July Bingo at St. Veronica Final Week! This Wednesday is the final week of July Bingo benefiting the Capital Campaign. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. with games beginning at 7:00 p.m. Beginning August 6, Bingo proceeds will once again benefit St. Veronica Catholic School. Traveling this Summer? A member of the RCIA team will follow up with details about the program, which begins in September.

Adoration Resumes New Adoration Hours: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday - Friday By the grace of God and after consultation with the Adoration coordinators, St. Veronica is pleased to announce that Eucharistic Adoration was able to resume on Tuesday, July 22. The new hours for Adoration will be 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. The Blessed Sacrament will be reposed and the Church locked up at 4:00 p.m. weekdays. Thank you for your patience as the staff and the Adoration team worked together to resolve the issues surrounding the security of our Adorers and our Church! Reflecting on the Word What is the kingdom of God worth to you? Throughout our lives we engage in cost-benefit analyses, balancing cost and risk with potential gains. This might seem a utilitarian approach to take toward faith, but Jesus parables in today s Gospel seem to imply that if we reflect on the matter we ought to see that gaining the kingdom of heaven is worth any cost, worth any risk. The 17th Century mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal made this wager regarding religious faith. If we weigh the potential benefit of faith (eternal life) against the cost (a life of religious devotion) and the risk (being wrong and there being no eternal life), it seems perfectly reasonable to have faith. This is not meant to be any sort of proof of the truth of religious faith. Rather, Pascal s point is the same one made in today s parables: the kingdom of heaven is something of such surpassing good that even the slightest chance of it being real should make us willing to surrender everything we have in order to gain it. Faith in an uncertainty is a small price to pay for the promise of eternal life. But even we who are believers, who have made the risky choice for faith, sometimes undervalue the gift of God s kingdom. Unlike Solomon in our first reading, we seek a long life or wealth or power over others rather than the pearl of great price, which is the wisdom of God s kingdom. Reflecting, as Pascal did, on the infinite value of what God offers us in the kingdom ought to lead us to live wholeheartedly for God. - from Living the Word Summer Enrichment Events (all events are in the Pastoral Center) Thursday, July 31 at 1:00 p.m.: The Movie The Quiet Man (starring John Wayne and Maureen O Hara) with a runtime of 129 minutes, will be shown. Capital Campaign Update - July 2014 Please Note: Repaving of the lower parking lot began this Wednesday, July 23. During the estimated 3-week project, there will be NO access to the lower parking lot from either Ponderosa Drive or Alida Way. The only access to St. Veronica s parking lot will be via the upper Alida Way driveway near the Rectory. Additionally, work on the Legacy Courtyard has begun. The Alida Way driveway between Falcon Hall (the cafeteria) and the Pastoral Center will no longer be accessible to motorized vehicles, except for emergency vehicles. Because of the expected congestion in the parking lot, use extra care when driving or walking around the campus during this time. Plan on giving yourself extra time to arrive for Mass or other events on campus. For the safety of all, please park in marked spaces only. Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we continue with Phase II of our Capital Campaign repaving and beautification project. Because of your generous and on-going support of the Capital Campaign, our spiritual home is becoming a safe and beautiful place for worship, fellowship and hospitality.
