s av e d b y fa i t h i n C h r i s t a n d n o t b y wo r ks! Saint Paul Letter to the Christians of Galatia ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 12 JUNE 2016 Today s Second Reading Galatians 2:16, 19-21 How can I become a changed person? How can I stop doing the things that I don t like about me, and instead do those things I know are better, good, and pleasing to God? Alcoholics Anonymous, and all other programs that follow the time-tested 12 Steps, say change begins with an admission that I am powerless over alcohol, or drugs, or anger, or (fill in the blank): whatever is defeating me that I want to put behind me. That admission of powerlessness is a stumbling block, or a deal breaker for a lot a people. It makes them feel weak - and no one likes to feel weak. It seems like giving-up too soon - and no one likes to feel defeated. But, of course, change doesn t stop there. Yes, I am powerless when I try to do it on my own. In today s Mass reading from Galatians, this is what St Paul is talking about: our old self trying to be changed and saved by doing it ourselves (works of the law). Or, as the 12 Step saying puts it, Your own best thinking got you here. Instead, by the coming of God into the world in Jesus, to live all of human life and change it, that old self can be done away with and a new self take hold in me. Not by my power, but by the power from above, a Higher Power. As St Paul shouts out, I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. (Galatians 2:19-20) To find out more about the communities to whom Paul was writing, I recommend Paul: His Story by Jerome Murphy-O Connor. After a lifetime of writing scholarly books about Paul, Murphy-O Connor wanted to write a friendly, easy reading book - and he has done it! Father Paul Congratulations Graduating Seniors! She was also a guest performer in Germany on two separate occasions for local chorus associations and the studio of Kathleen Dodge-DeHaven. Kathleen has been Yvonne s vocal coach over the years and asks for Yvonne to be a part of any endeavor when possible. Kathleen s many credits as Musical Director on the Mississippi Coast included Yvonne in either supporting roles or as assistant musical director. Yvonne performed the role of Madam Peep in Gulf Coast Opera s production of Oedipus Tex and the contralto title role of Madam Flora in The Medium with Kathleen as musical director. Kathleen and Yvonne both have religious backgrounds and a deep understanding of liturgical music. Pairing them is this setting has often proved their most successful musical offerings. Ms. McGrath teaches voice and piano privately in Biloxi, Mississippi. She occasionally fills as music director or revival musician for small churches. After a long and fulfilling career as a collaborative pianist and music director, in Mississippi, Japan, Germany, and St. Croix, USVI, Ms. Dodge- DeHaven retired with her husband Steve DeHaven to Whidbey Island in 2010; but it wasn t long before she felt the call to return to playing and teaching music, and so she came to St. Augustine and St. Mary Catholic Churches in December 2011.
