Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost August 20, 2017 8:30 am & 10:00 am Bible Verse of the Month: Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you. Psalm 67:3 (NRSV) Gathering Prelude Voluntary in E Minor Charles John Stanley Please use the prelude as a quiet time to prepare yourself for worship. Welcome You are invited to stand. Confession and Forgiveness Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, full of compassion and mercy, abounding in steadfast love. Amen. Trusting God s promise of forgiveness, let us confess our sin against God and one another. Eternal God our creator, in you we live and move and have our being. Look upon us, your children, the work of your hands. Forgive us all our offenses, and cleanse us from proud thoughts and empty desires. By your grace draw us near to you, our refuge and our strength; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit given to us. In the mercy of almighty God, Christ died for us while we still were sinners; and for his sake, God + forgives you all your sins. Amen. You are invited to stand and face the processional cross. Gathering Hymn Gather Us In Hymn #532 Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

2 Hymn of Praise

Prayer of the Day God of all peoples, your arms reach out to embrace all those who call upon you. Teach us as disciples of your Son to love the world with compassion and constancy, that your name may be known throughout the earth, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Please be seated. Word First Lesson Psalm 67 1 May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, 2 that your way may be known upon earth, your saving power among all nations. 3 Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you. 4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations upon earth. 5 Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you. 6 The earth has yielded its increase; God, our God, has blessed us. 7 May God continue to bless us; let all the ends of the earth revere him. SECOND LESSON Romans 11:1-2a, 29-32 God has not rejected Israel. Rather, the call and gifts of God are irrevocable, so that while all have been disobedient, God has mercy upon all. Second Lesson Romans 11:1-2a, 29-32 Holy Bible pg. 167-168 (NT) The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. You are invited to stand. Gospel Acclamation 3

GOSPEL Matthew 15: 10-20, 21-28 Jesus teaches his disciples that true purity is a matter of the heart rather than outward religious observances. Almost immediately, this teaching is tested when a woman considered to be pagan and unclean approaches him for help. The Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. Gospel Matthew 15:10-20, 21-28 Holy Bible pg. 17 (NT) The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon Hymn of the Day There s a Wideness in God s Mercy Hymn #588 Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Peace The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. After sharing the Peace, please be seated. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING is a meal prayer. Eucharist is the Greek word for thanksgiving. Before we come forward to eat as a congregation and family of God, we give thanks to God. The Great Thanksgiving THE PREFACE is a prayer which reminds us that, in Christ, we are united with all the Saints who have gone before us. We are a part of the Communion of Saints through all time and space. Preface It is indeed right, our duty and our joy......we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Sanctus 5

Words of Institution...For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the mystery of our faith. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. THE LORD S PRAYER is the prayer that Jesus taught the disciples to pray found in Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4. Lord's Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Please be seated. The Distribution Bethany welcomes all to receive the body and blood of Christ in Holy Communion. An usher will direct you forward for communion. There are several stations across the front of the seating sections. Groups are welcome to visit a communion station together. You will receive a piece of bread in your hand, please dip the bread into the cup of wine. Those who are not receiving communion are invited to receive a blessing.
