The Riverside Church in the City of New York APRIL 1, 2018 EASTER SUNDAY

Welcome to The Riverside Church Worship is at the center of the life of The Riverside Church. As you prepare yourself for Worship, we invite you to reflect quietly on these words: We are called to say yes To a God who still holds fast To the vision of the Kingdom For a trembling world of pain. We are called to say yes To this God who reaches out And asks us to share [God s] crazy dream of love. - From Called to Say Yes by Edwina Gateley The Liturgical Year The Riverside Church follows the liturgical calendar to mark the seasons of our life together. We are currently in the season of Eastertide, a period of 50 days following the resurrection of Jesus Christ until Pentecost. The liturgical color of Eastertide is white, which symbolizes the hope of the resurrection, as well as the purity and newness that comes from victory over sin and death, as signified by the paraments and clergy stoles. If this is your first visit: Complete a Welcome Card and place it in the offering plate as it passes. Join us for Fellowship Hour in South Hall directly after Worship. Assistive hearing devices and large print bulletins are available upon request from an usher. Easter Offering The theme of Riverside s 2018 giving and serving campaign is Grateful. We re all grateful for the love, community, and prophetic ministry of our church, so we re expressing how we feel by giving and serving more than ever before. In the spirit of the campaign, today s offering supports the Social Services of The Riverside Church, including the Food Pantry, Barber Training Program, Clothing Distribution, Shower Project, Safe Haven Shelter, and Direct Aid. These programs offer fresh food, groceries, warm clothes, hot showers, and safe places to rest to nearly 30,000 men, women, and children every year. You re invited to join us. To give, simply place your gift in an Easter envelope or write Easter on your check or any envelope. To learn more and get involved, please visit www.trcnyc.org/donate. Life of Our Community For announcements of programs and events in the church, please pick up the Life of Our Community bulletin located in the back of the pew or outside the Welcome Center. Or visit our website www.trcnyc.org.

This is the Easter festival of life. We celebrate the birth of new possibilities, of re-creation and new life as gifts from God. All creatures rejoice in the powerful work of God s salvation! One: In Christ s resurrection, hope triumphs over despair! All: Love triumphs over hate! One: Good triumphs over evil! All: Joy triumphs over fear and life triumphs over death!

One: Glory and honor and praise to Christ who lives and reigns among us! All: Alleluia to the Living Christ! One: Christ is risen. All: Christ is risen indeed! INVOCATION INTROIT O Magnify the Lord Moses Hogan Magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt God s name together. Praise the Lord. Magnify Him. Praise the Lord and let us magnify Him. Praise God s holy name. For our heart shall rejoice because we have trusted in God s holy name. Let us exalt God s name together. Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we hope in Thee. NEW TESTAMENT SCRIPTURE LESSON Acts 10:34-43 (page 129 in the New Testament) One: The Word of God for the People of God. All: Thanks be to God. Rev. Geraldine Howard / Valerie Henning-Piedmont ANTHEM Christ, Our Passover Richard Dirksen Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us: therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Christ is risen from the dead, and become the first fruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. EPISTLE LESSON 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 (page 176 in the New Testament) One: The Word of God for the People of God. All: Thanks be to God. Eric McFadden / Len Leach GRADUAL HYMN The Strife Is O er Victory Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! The strife is o er, the battle done: The victory of life is won; The song of triumph has begun; Alleluia! The powers of death have done their worst, But Christ their legions hath dispersed; Let shouts of holy joy outburst; Alleluia! GOSPEL LESSON Mark 16:1-8 (page 54 in the New Testament) One: This is the Gospel of Christ. All: Thanks be to God. Rev. Lynn Casteel Harper / Rev. Debra Northern

GRADUAL HYMN The three sad days are quickly sped, Christ rises glorious from the dead; All glory to our risen Head! Alleluia! Lord, by the stripes which wounded Thee, From death s dread sting thy servants free, That we may live and sing to Thee; Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! SERMON #FoolsToo Rev. Butler PASTORAL PRAYER One: The Lord be with you. All: And with your spirit. One: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them up unto the Lord. Rev. Michael Livingston THE LORD S PRAYER Pray in the language or version of your heart. Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. PASSING OF THE PEACE One: The peace of the Lord be with you. All: And also with you. INVITATION TO GIVE AND SERVE Rev. Kevin Wright / Rev. Bertram Johnson OFFERTORY ANTHEM Gloria in Excelsis Deo John Rutter Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to those of good will. We praise You, we bless You, we adore You, we glorify You, we give You thanks for Your great glory. AT THE PRESENTATION The congregation rises row by row as ushers pass to symbolize the offering of our whole selves to God. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND DEDICATION THE HALLELUJAH CHORUS The congregation stands and sings with the choir. Minister Christian Peele / Rev. Rachel Johnson G. F. Handel

BENEDICTION Rev. Butler HYMN Christ Is Risen! Shout Hosanna! Hymn to Joy Christ is risen! Shout Hosanna! Celebrate this day of days! Christ is risen! Hush in wonder: All creation is amazed. In the desert all surrounding, See a spreading tree has grown. Healing leaves of grace abounding Bring a taste of love unknown. Christ is risen! Raise your spirits From the caverns of despair. Walk with gladness in the morning, See what love can do and dare. Drink the wine of resurrection, Not a servant, but a friend. Jesus is our strong companion. Joy and peace shall never end. Christ is risen! Earth and heaven Nevermore shall be the same. Break the bread of new creation Where the world is still in pain. Tell its grim, demonic chorus: Christ is risen! Get you gone! God the First and Last is with us. Sing Hosanna, everyone! About the front cover Artist: Jyoti Sahi Jyoti Sahi (b. 1944) is an artist-theologian and is one of the founding members of the Asian Christian Art Association. Sahi was born to a British Christian mother and Punjabi Hindu father. He studied art under Sudhir Khastigir and studied in London at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts (now Camberwell College of Arts). He uses his art to create a dialogue between Hinduism and Christianity. One of his interests is the role of art and culture in the church especially in the Indian context. In 1986, he published his book, Stepping Stones: Reflections on the Theology of Indian Christian Culture. He describes this book as a pilgrimage, a search for homeland... not just in the past but in something beyond.
