Issue No. 2 20th December 2016 Compiled by Madrasah Kashiful Uloom Designed by Uzair Nakhuda IN THIS ISSUE STORIES MUSLIM INVENTIONS KIDZ KORNER As Humans Allah has made us very social creatures, and whilst we socialise we are always attracted to the character, lifestyle, traits & habits of those around us. Especially as children, we absorb all that we see, hear and experience. Eventually all that we absorb becomes our way of life. This is why it is vital as children we select a positive role model from an early age. As Muslims we are extremely lucky to have countless role models within our beautiful religion of Islam. Examples of some of whom we have included in this newsletter. Muhammed S.A.W (PBUH) Umar ibn Al-Khattab (R) Umar ibn Abdul Aziz (RA) As teachers & adults, the more we motivate our children in reading and studying about these role models, the better prepared our children will be in their quest towards success, during this journey of life. Who was the second caliph of the Muslim ummah? This newsletter is sponsored by Shining Stars Nursery 14 Avenham Rd, Preston, Lancashire, PR1 3TH

The Khalifa and the Lamp Umar ibn `Abd al-aziz rahmatullah alaih (R) was a great Khalifah (leader) from Bani Umayyah, a famous tribe of Makkah. When he was appointed khalifah, he took all of his wife's jewellery and gave it to the Muslims. Some people from his tribe had land which they had taken illegally from the government. He took that land and gave it to the poor. He ruled with justice and mercy, helping the oppressed and the unfortunate ones, who had been treated with cruelty. He took only two small silver coins called dirhams from the treasury as a salary and thus his life was very simple. Before he became khalifah, he was known for living a splendid and luxurious life but now that he became khalifah, he lead an extremely simple life, simpler than most ordinary men. Once a man came to see Khalifah Umar (R) and stayed with him for some time. Whilst they were talking, the oil in the lamp finished and the lamp went out. Khalifah Umar's (R) servant was sleeping nearby. The guest said, Allow me to wake up your servant so that he can put oil in the lamp. Khalifah Umar (R) said There is no need to wake up the servant. The guest asked Then may I fill it with oil? Khalifah Umar (R) replied No, you are my guest. I do not ask my guests to work for me. I will light the lamp myself. The Khalifah Umar (R) stood up, went and found the oil, put it in the lamp and once again it was burning as bright as before. Then he sat down next to his guest and said, I was Umar (R) before I stood up and lit the lamp and I am still Umar after lighting the lamp. Doing this little task does not lower a mans dignity. Despite his lofty position Khalifah Umar (R) was a very humble man and never asked anyone to do anything for him that which he could do for himself. Such was the mannerism of Umar ibn `Abd al-aziz (R)

Prophet Muhammad (S) said, "The best of people are the people of my generation, then those who come after them, then those who come after them." The Sahaba did not all have the exact same personalities, backgrounds, mind-sets, outlooks, or tastes. They were all unique; however they were united upon Islam. As Muslims, we too are not all the same. We are able to take distinct lessons from each of the sahaba. Some were gentle, others were firm; some were learned men and women, while others were unlettered. Some of the sahaba lacked wealth, while others were the millionaires and leading entrepreneurs of their time. It is truly the mercy of Allah that he has given us so many role models for every aspect of life. Let us continue our exploration by looking at one of Prophet Muhammad s (S) closest friends, the second caliph Hadhrat Umar (RA) Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA) went from being one of the strongest opponents of Islam to one of its most devout believers. Umar (RA) was a pioneering figure in the Islamic world. He was a pious God-conscious Muslim leader who showed respect to people of all faiths. Umar (RA) was known for his power and strength. He used his bold intellect and his far-sighted wisdom for the empowerment of the Muslims. Prophet Muhammad (S) called Umar "Al- Farooq" - the Criterion between good and evil. Once Hadhrat Umar ibn Alkhattab (RA), during his caliphate, was on his usual patrol during the night and went towards Harrah (a suburb of Madinah) accompanied by his slave Aslam. That night he noticed a distant fire in the desert. He remarked, "There appears to be a camp in the desert. Perhaps, it is a caravan that could not enter the town due to night fall. Let us go and look after them and arrange for their protection during the night." Upon arriving, he found a woman and some children that were crying. Umar (RA) enquired why they were crying. The woman sadly replied to him, "Because they are hungry." Noticing a pan placed upon a fire, Umar (RA) questioned further, "What is in the pan?" The woman replied, "Only water to soothe the children, so that they may go to sleep in the belief that food is being prepared for them. Oh! How Allah S.W.T will judge between Umar (RA) and me, on the Day of Judgment, for neglecting me" Umar (RA) began to cry, "May Allah have mercy on you! How would Umar (RA) know of your ditress?" The woman said, "When he is our Amir (Leader), he must keep himself informed about us."

Promptly Hadhrat Umar returned and went straight to the Baitul Maal (Food Bank). He filled a sack with flour, dates, fat, clothes, and also drew some money. When the sack was ready, he said to Aslam, "Now place this sack on my back, Aslam." Aslam replied, "No! Please! Amirul Mu'mineen! I will carry this sack for you." Umar refused to listen to Aslam, even on his persistent requests to allow him to carry the sack, he remarked, "What! Will you carry my load (sins and deeds) on the Day of Judgment? I must carry this bag, because it is I being the leader who will be questioned (in the Hereafter) regarding the plight of this woman." Aslam most reluctantly placed the bag on Umar's back, who carried it with a swift pace to where the woman had pitched her tent. Aslam followed at his heels. Upon arrival he placed flour, some dates and fat in the pan and began to stir. He blew (with his mouth) into the fire to try and keep it burning. Whilst doing so Aslam said, "I saw the smoke passing through his thick beard." After some time, the pottage was ready. He himself served it to the family. When they had eaten to their fill, he handed over to them what was left for their next meal. The children were very happy after their meal and began to play about merrily. The woman was extremely grateful and remarked, "May Allah reward you for your kindness! In fact you deserve to take the place of Khalifah instead of Umar." Umar consoled her and said, "When you come to visit the Khalifah, you will find me there." STORY TIME > SACRIFICE OF THE LAMB As the Prophet (S), and his companions arrived at their destination from their rides, they laid down their load, and it was decided that they would barbecue a lamb for dinner. One of the companions volunteered: "I will sacrifice the lamb." Another: "I will skin it." Third: "I will cook it." Fourth: " I will..." The Prophet (S) upon noticing that all the chores had been taken he said: "I will gather the firewood from the forest." The group: "O Messenger of Allah, it is not appropriate for us to discomfort you. Please rest, we will be honoured to do take care of all the tasks." The Prophet (S) replied: "I know that you are eager to do it all, but Allah isn't pleased with the slave who distinguishes between himself and his companions, and considers himself better than others." He then went to the forest, gathered some firewood, and a short while later returned to the group. Just as one act of disrespect can harm someone, one act of appreciation, recognition, or respect can improve relationships and even repair broken ties. Life really is a two-way street kindness and fair treatment will always have a good outcome. The Prophet Muhammad (S) brought Islam into the world and was a true model of excellence for human values and rights. He turned those that were considered the worst of people, into the best of people. He stood up for the rights of all living beings irrespective of race, culture or religion, in a society where almost nobody understood dignity or respect. So show respect and be kind to all. Treat others fairly and be gentle to your friends and family. This will most definitely be beneficial as it is the practice of the greatest role model that ever will stroll upon this earth. My beloved and your beloved Prophet Muhammed (S).

Outstanding Muslim Inventions The celebrated doctor Al Zahrawi founded several methods of surgery, which are still used to this day across the globe Abbas ibn Firnas was the first person to make a real attempt to construct a flying machine. Firnas performed many trials, resulting in a temporary upward motion (flying). His designs were most definitely an inspiration for the inventor Leonardo da Vinci, hundreds of years later The Beloved Prophet (S) was the one that popularised the use of the first toothbrush In the form of the Meswak in the year 600 Algebra was first invented by the Persian mathematician. Al-Khwarizma, releasing the book titled `the book of reasoning and balance` The crank was invented by Al-Jazari in the 12th century to help move heavy items with ease. This technology exploded, leading to everything from automobiles to bicycles Coffee was first brewed in Yemen around the 9th century. In the early days, coffee helped Sufis stay up during long late nights of devotion In 859 a young princess named Fatima al-firha founded the first university in Fez (Morocco). Still operating almost 1200 years later. This university is preserved in the hope that it inspires young Muslim women around the world The first medical centre was founded in 872 in Cairo, providing free care for anyone who needed it a policy based on the Muslim tradition of caring for all who are sick. From Cairo, such hospitals spread across the world
