REVELATION 5 Still in throne room Have been introduced to images, creatures and activity in this place, now some strategic items and actions THE 7-SEALED SCROLL: books not devised until 2 nd century Everything on a scroll...revelation estimated to be one scroll, maybe 15-20 long Not normal for a scroll to be written on both sides. Indicates a legal document, common both to Jews and Romans. Could be a will, any legal agreement, a marriage contract (Hebrew ketubah), title deed or other legal document Contents inside, who was authorized to open on the outside Hebrews required at least 3 witnesses, seals (could be more) Roman law required 7 seals WHAT IS THIS SCROLL? WHAT DOES IT CONTAIN Quite simply...we don t know! Not told. Lots of speculation, most...it is a title deed to the earth (given first to Adam, lost to enemy, redeemed by Yeshua) Based on Jeremiah 32, buys land as a sign they will return, transaction marked with sealed document Some say ketubah, Hebrew marriage contract What is IN the scroll? JUDGMENT. Seems unlikely that it is something other than the legal document that God had in place from the beginning. [7 seals, 7 = perfectly complete perhaps speaking of entire plan/judgment of mankind] WHAT IS THIS SCROLL? WHAT DOES IT CONTAIN? Speculation abounds, either way, it is a critical document to the future of earth, and man. Title deed to the earth a likely possibility, but could be something else. Legal document required authorized person to open If title deed, required a kinsman of Adam (Boaz, kinsman-redeemer) Romans 5, Jesus is kinsman to Adam, the second man John deeply upset no one appears qualified, so contents of scroll are of utmost importance. What do we know is on/in the scroll? All of the judgments contained in this book are contained in this scroll. As far as we know it contains only judgment, perfectly complete (7X3). 3 sets of f7 judgments each... 7 Seal judgments, 7 th seal opens and contains the... 7 Trumpet judgments, 7 th trumpet opens and contains the... 7 Bowl ( vial ) judgments...7 th bowl judgment: Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done! (16:17) 1

6/18/2014 The only thing we know for sure that is on this scroll is a perfectly complete set of judgments for unrepentant mankind. It may be something else, like a title deed to the earth, or a ketubah (wedding contract), or something else, but whatever it is, it contains only judgment. Doesn t seem likely l k l a wedding dd contract would ld contain judgment. We are not told, so speculation is only as good as man s wisdom, which is not very good! Angel asks who is worthy? in loud voice Looked in 3 places for someone in heaven, on the earth, under the earth. [only places a man could be found either dead or alive, Sheol/Hades] Who is worthy to open the scroll and loose its seals? Revelation 5:2-4 John may know what this sealed document is, even if we don t, and he is very upset no one can (is authorized) to open it. At this point, we have not been introduced to the Lamb... A STRONG angel... perhaps an archangel or one of more power and authority than others? There is a hierarchy to the hosts of heaven. Revelation 5:5 2

no one was found worthy unworthiness of mankind NONE worthy. Only One... Behold = pay attention, take note! There IS someone worthy... Lion of the Tribe of Judah Our Master is not mentioned often by His Name Yeshua in this book, but by His many titles. We always know when it is Yeshua, and not some imposter by these titles. Genesis 49:9-10 Jacob s blessing to his sons: Judah is a lion s whelp; From the prey, my son, you have gone up. He bows down, he lies down as a lion; And as a lion, who shall rouse him? The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes; And to Him shall be the obedience of the people. This verse only place this title is found, but understood Messiah would be from the tribe of Judah throughout scripture. (Judah is the tribe of the kings.) Root of David another Messianic title Only place that title is used (Rev 5:5), but called root of Jesse in other places (David s father) And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse, Who shall stand as a banner to the people; For the Gentiles shall seek Him, And His resting place shall be glorious. (Isaiah 11:9-11) And again, Isaiah says: There shall be a root of Jesse; And He who shall rise to reign over the Gentiles, In Him the Gentiles shall hope. (quoted in Romans 15:12) The Titles of the Messiah (the Anointed One) HaMashiach, Christos, Christ 24 different titles in just first 3 chapters. All about His current role, revealed to the Church (in letters to Churches) From here on, we will see only His clearly Jewish (Hebrew) titles Another indication Church not here during Tribulation. God s focus now on the people of the book the apple of His eye the Hebrew race Jews take center stage Covenants still in effect with His people John is looking for a lion, and sees a Lamb. The sacrificial Lamb came at 1 st coming, the Lion of Judah will come next! Lamb as though it had been slain... NO QUESTION WHO THIS IS! He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth. (Isaiah 53:7) The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! (John 1:29) And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, Behold the Lamb of God! (John 1:36) Revelation 5:6 3

Lamb as though it had been slain......knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you. (1 Peter 1:18-20) Our Savior, Yeshua (Jesus) called only The Lamb in Revelation 25 times seven horns horns symbol of power complete and perfect power King of Kings, Lord of Lords, I AM seven eyes all seeing, omniscient seven Spirits Isaiah 11:2 The message of Messiah, the Spirit of Yeshua, sent throughout the earth during Church age The Spirit of the LORD [YAHWEH] shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD [YAHWEH]. YHWH (or YHVH) יהוה Jewish sages note the four letters of the Name (the tetragramaton ) are used to form the phrase hayah hoveh yi'yeh, "He was, He is, He will be. (We know who this is!) Wisdom wisdom, skillfulness Understanding perfect understanding, wisdom Counsel prudence, purpose, advice Might power, victory, mastery, force Knowledge awareness, cunning, all-knowing Fear of YHWH reverence of the I AM ALL OF THE FATHER RESTS ON THE SON Revelation 5:6 Revelation 5:7 Then He came and took the scroll out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne. (5:7) 4

The Lamb is the only one worthy to take and open the scroll The Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the Root (offshoot) of David from the right hand the right hand is the hand of fellowship the hand of favor. The left hand is the hand of disfavor or judgment. Here we have present all members of the Godhead: The Almighty Father, the Lamb (the Son) and the Spirit of the Most High upon the Son. All occupy the throne together. The four living creatures and the 24 elders represent all of creation. All creation falls down before the Throne. Literally, fall down not bow. Who can stand...? WHO CAN STAND? NO ONE! Revelation 5:8 He gives snow like wool; He scatters the frost like ashes; He casts out His hail like morsels; Who can stand before His cold? He sends out His word and melts them; He causes His wind to blow, and the waters flow. (Psalm 147:16-18) Who can stand before His indignation? And who can endure the fierceness of His anger? His fury is poured out like fire, And the rocks are thrown down by Him. (Nahum 1:6) Will see this literally, next chapter. But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner s fire And like launderers soap. (Malachi 3:2) Harps instruments of praise Golden bowls of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. remember, the Bible interprets itself!!! We will see these bowls and incense again later (chapter 8). Prayer in His Name and His will is partnering with God to accomplish His plan. Have you ever prayed the Lord s Prayer... Thy will be done...? your prayers are included in these bowls. Finally ONE worthy takes the scroll rejoicing now Finally, ONE worthy takes the scroll, rejoicing now new song common term in Psalms, new song represents a new work of God. Here it is part of the New Covenant, song of redemption. Ch. 4 song of creation, now song of redemption. New work of redemption celebrated. Note this is song for mankind, not angels. They are not redeemed. (Elders are NOT angels!!) 5

6/18/2014 You are worthy...for You were slain... - credentials for the one who is worthy to open the scroll. He was killed to pay the penalty for our sins. Blood was a required payment. have redeemed us... literallyy purchased back English, it is finished Greek = tetelestai = PAID IN FULL! Because of this, He is worthy to open the scroll. Also, He is the one to whom the Father committed all judgment we know the scroll contains God s perfectly complete judgment on mankind. It is fitting, proper and correct, that the Son (the Lamb that was slain) opens the scroll and begins the judgment process. For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son (John 5:22) every tribe and tongue and people and nation... No one is left out of this accounting. God has redeemed the entire world to Himself, through the death of the Lamb, His beloved Son. Revelation 5:8-10 You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; For You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood blood. kings and priests word used for kings same as for kingdom. Most likely kingdom and priests or kingdom of priests. Likely ik l only l ONE O KING G in i the h Kingdom i d off God. G d we shall reign on the earth we are to be coregents with Him in the Millennial Kingdom So Jesus said to them, Assuredly I say to you, that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. (Matthew 19:28) But you are those who have continued with Me in My trials. And I bestow upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one upon Me,... (Luke 22:28) If we endure, We shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us. (2 Ti th 2:12) Timothy 2 12) Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years. (Revelation 20:6) 6

6/18/2014 Worthy is the h Lamb b who h was slain Revelation 5:11-12 Bring on the angels! Now we have quite a scene here in the throne room...angels (beyond counting), the living creatures, the redeemed (elders) the Almighty Father and the Lamb. What an amazing sight for John to try to describe....and and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands... it is doubtful John counted the angels! Greek word for ten thousand is murias, literally myriads upon myriads. John is indicating a number way too huge to even count. This is the uncountable (except to the Almighty!) host of heaven. Worthy is the Lamb who was slain... worthy in Greek is axios, meaning deserving, due reward, literally of proper weight. The Lamb (Yeshua, Jesus) the ONLY one just right, (of proper weight) to redeem mankind and the entire earth. No one else could do it. Handel s H d l Messiah, M i h Worthy W h is i the h Lamb L b Handel indicated his inspiration for his entire work were these chapters in the throne room of heaven, Revelation 4 and 5. He said he looked into the glory of heaven. We get to glimpse this glory here! Revelation 5:11...to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and blessing! Notice there are 7 things listed here: Power The Messiah already owns all of these things, Riches but notice they are also things that WE give Him. Is there anything we find powerful, rich, Wisdom Strength wise, honorable, full of glory and blessing? Then it should all be given to Him. None of Honor these things is for us these are not things for Glory us to hunger for, only to give to Him. Blessing It ALL belongs to Him. Perfectly complete list. Angels are saying or declaring this, not singing it (as the elders were) Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever! Revelation 5:13 7

every creature... Everywhere! There is no creature (created thing) anywhere that is not included in this group. ALL PRAISING! Notice again, the three places listed: In heaven, on the earth, under the earth. Everything ever created, dead or alive will praise Him... Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11) Revelation 5:12 Praise Yah! Praise Yahweh from the heavens! Praise him in the heights! 2 Praise him, all his angels! Praise him, all his army! 3 Praise him, sun and moon! Praise him, all you shining stars! 4 Praise him, you heavens of heavens, You waters that are above the heavens. 5 Let them praise Yahweh s name, For he commanded, and they were created. 6 He has also established them forever and ever. He has made a decree which will not pass away. 7 Praise Yahweh from the earth, you great sea creatures, and all depths! 8 Lightning and hail, snow and clouds; stormy wind, fulfilling his word; 9 mountains and all hills; fruit trees and all cedars; 10 wild animals and all livestock; small creatures and flying birds; 11 kings of the earth and all peoples; princes and all judges of the earth; 12 both young men and maidens; old men and children: 13 let them praise Yahweh s name, for his name alone is exalted. His glory is above the earth and the heavens. 14 He has lifted up the horn of his people, the praise of all his saints; even of the children of Israel, a people near to him. Praise Yah! (Psalm 148) What we see in this vision of the throne room of heaven is what all creation was intended to do to praise Elohim! PRAISE = Hebrew halal, to shine; hence to make a show; to boast; and thus to be (clamorously) foolish; to rave; to celebrate; boast (self), commend, glory, give [light], praise, renowned, shine. This is the third round of praise in the throne room. PRAISING GOD UNDERSTANDS AND REFLECTS THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD... And acknowledges them all... 8

Ref English Greek Meaning 4:9-11 glory doxa deem of excellent reputation, reveal, show, *glory, honor, praise, extol thanks (beasts), then glory, honor time value, esteem, preciousness, highest degree honor, power (elders) thanks* eucharistia gratitude, grateful language power* dunamis miraculous, inherent power and might power dunamis see above riches ploutos wealth, abundance, fullness 5:12 wisdom sophia wisdom strength ischus force, ability, might, strength honor time see above glory doxa see above blessing eulogia commendation, adoration, excellence of language (speaking well of someone) 5:13 honor time see above glory doxa see above power kratos dominion, greatness, power This praise is directed at Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb... This is a very pointed statement that the One on the throne and the Lamb are equal in status and praise- worthiness. Both are worthy of all this praise, all the glory, honor, power, blessing, riches, wisdom, strength and gratitude. Both are God. They are One. said here implies continuous action. They aren t done here!!this praise continues into eternity. The final AMEN Chapters 4 and 5 reveal an increasing crescendo of praise, more and more, louder and louder. This is the overture before beginning the movie of this revelation. Establishes God s worthiness and authority to open the scroll and commence judgment and final redemption. Judgment begins in chapter 6. Revelation 5:14 Amen! The scroll is now in the hands of the only One worthy to open it. Judgment begins next... Revelation 5 Revelation 5:14 9
