Mother s Day Haggadah Shoresh David Messianic Synagogues www.shoreshdavid.org 813-831-5673 1
Our Mother s Day Vision At Passover, we sit down for a Seder (order) meal and go through the Haggadah (the Telling), a booklet which leads us through a meaningful time of learning and sharing about the Lord and what He has done for us! American holidays, like Mother s Day, can also enhance our family life, and our relationship with God if we take the time to consider their origin and celebrate together. The purpose of this Mother s Day Haggadah is to show us God s design for bringing families together, and to help us honor and esteem our mothers. 1 ADONAI bless you and keep you! ADONAI make His face to shine on you and be gracious to you! ADONAI turn His face toward you and grant you shalom! Numbers 6:24-26
The Origin of the Family In Genesis, chapters 1 & 2, God said, Let us make man in Our image, after Our likeness male and female He created them. God blessed them and said, Be fruitful and multiply... Then ADONAI said, It is not good for the man to be alone. Let Me make a well-matched helper for him. God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. He took one of his ribs and built a woman from it. Then, He brought her to the man. The man said: This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh from my flesh. This one is called woman, for from man was taken this one....this is why a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife; and they become one flesh. Genesis 2:23 2
Origin of Mother s Day Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis (1831-1905) a mother, and the inspiration for Mother s Day, married Granville Jarvis. Pregnant with her sixth child, Ann started Mother s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues and care for sick mothers. During the Civil War, the Clubs remained neutral. They nursed the sick and fed and clothed soldiers from both sides of the conflict. Ann loved God and despite losing seven of her eleven children, she taught Sunday School for 25 years. Ann Marie Jarvis died on May 9, 1905, a Proverbs 31 woman. 3 Anna Marie Jarvis, (1864-1948) the daughter of Ann Maria and Founder of Mother s Day, began to champion a special day set aside for mothers, two years after her mother died. Anna remembered her mother for her godliness and benevolence. Anna never married nor was she a mother herself, but she believed mothers to be: the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world Her goal was achieved when President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation in the year 1914, declaring Mother s Day, a national holiday and stating that mothers are to be honored on the second Sunday in May.
