School Pastors Conference: Notre Dame L ast week I was in attendance at a School Pastors Conference at Notre Dame in Indiana. We were 92 pastors from all over the country. We listened to and discussed a great deal about the importance of Catholic Education and ways to promote it. I hope to write about it in the coming weeks. It was my first time at the Notre Dame Campus, and it is quite an amazing place. We stayed in one of the dorms, with the welcome dinner held on the first day in the main building, right beneath the golden dome. One of the students who gave us the campus tour told us that none of the students dare to ascend the front steps to the main building because of the belief that if they do, they would not graduate. So, that is the first thing they do after graduation they ascend the front steps of the main building and take pictures. Our student tour guide let us go up the front steps while he went up using the steps in the back of the building. I was disappointed that we could not get a tour of the famous football stadium. We went around it and saw the image of the Touchdown Jesus right across the stadium. It is the image of the risen Christ with both hands raised up. The tour guide also told us that the students of Notre Dame campus would not dare to walk on the grass in front of Touchdown Jesus, again for fear of not graduating. The image of the Touchdown Jesus is on the front facade of the 13-story library, which has about 3.3 million books. We ended the campus tour with a visit to the Grotto of Our Lady. This is a replica of the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes and is one-seventh the size of the famed French shrine where the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Bernadette on 18 occasions in 1858. Visiting the site on one of his many trips to his native country, Notre Dame founder Father Edward Sorin vowed to reproduce it on the campus of his new university. A gift from Rev. Thomas Carroll, a former theology student, made it possible in 1896. Boulders from surrounding farms, most weighing two tons or more, were used in its construction. A small piece of stone from the original grotto in France is located on the right-hand side of the shrine, directly below the statue of Mary. To Notre Dame students and alumni, the Grotto is a special place to spend a few quiet moments and, especially during football weekends and finals, you might have difficulty finding a candle to light. Hundreds of students have proposed marriage here; outdoor Masses are celebrated regularly; and the Rosary is prayed every day at 6:45 p.m., every day of the year rain or shine. Right next to the main building is the beautiful Basilica of the Sacred Heart built in 1871. The entire church is very ornate with beautiful, stained-glass windows and an elegant pipe organ. We had a guided tour of the Basilica, a Gothic-inspired, cross-shaped place of worship and welcome, nurturing Notre Dame s Catholic identity. Many members of the campus community gather here amid its artistic splendor for daily and weekly Masses that are celebrated both in the main body of the church and in its basement Crypt chapel. Confession or the Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered frequently, as are other sacraments, such as Matrimony, bringing back numerous alumni who wish to be married in this grand setting with the beautiful artwork that fills this space. Also helping to lift the heart to God are the voices of student choirs that sing at various Masses. I left Notre Dame with great feelings of what the Catholic education has done and is doing for the society and the Church. Fr. Jose Thomas

Weddings at St. Francis of Assisi Parish For all those who are thinking about getting married; or those who might be interested in having their civil marriage convalidated; or if you would just like to know the process today, this is for you. Some of the questions that are always asked when a couple is considering getting married at St. Francis of Assisi Parish are: Can I have a visiting priest as presider? My fiancé is non-catholic; can I still get married in the Catholic Church? My fiancé is un-baptized; can I still get married in the Catholic Church? I am not from your Parish; I live in another state; can I still get married at St. Francis of Assisi Parish? The response to all of these questions is yes. First and most important is setting up a meeting with the Priest and the Wedding Coordinator. From there it is determined what paperwork will need to be completed in accordance with the Diocese of Baker. It is requested that we have at least six months prior to the wedding date to get the paperwork completed and approvals, if needed. If an annulment needs to be started, it can take longer, and no paperwork or date is set until it is granted and that is not guaranteed. All couples getting married or having their marriage convalidated in the Catholic Church are required to complete a course of Pre-Cana. This is offered at St. Francis of Assisi Parish. If you have any questions regarding Pre-Cana, please contact Natasha Rider at precana@stfrancisbend.org. If you have any questions regarding the process; or if you are interested in getting married; or if you are having a convalidation, please call Karin Jones, St. Francis Parish Wedding Coordinator, at (541) 382-3631, Ext. 106, or send an email to Karen at: weddings@stfrancisbend.org.

ST. FRANCIS PARISH LIFE Eucharistic Adoration Faith Formation 7 St. John Paul II pointed out that the parishes most on fire are those that emphasize Eucharistic Adoration. He called Adoration Radiation Therapy. It is a wellspring of deep emotional healing, transformation, and holiness. We are told that Moses face became radiant as he conversed with the Lord at the tent of meeting and especially after his 40 days atop Mt. Sinai. He was permeated with the presence of God. Pope John Paul II Mondays: 10 11 a.m. Tuesdays: 5 6 p.m. Wednesdays: 5 6 p.m. Thursdays: 4 5 p.m. Fridays: 4 5 p.m. If you are able to commit to one of the Holy Hours listed above, please contact Judy Kennedy at (541) 640-9600 or email to: judyekennedy@icloud.com. Cans & Bottles Collection The St. Francis Parish Knights of Columbus have collected a total of $2,260.00 toward the 27th St. Church mortgage from cans and bottles as of June 30th. Thank you, Mark Reinig at the 27th St. Church Youth Sunday Summer Car Washes. Look for us on the south side of the St. Francis 27th St. Church parking lot on select Sunday mornings this summer. Park your car in the Car Wash area before Mass, and your car will be clean and ready for you after Mass. Support our youth travels. All donations go toward our trip to Steubenville NW, Spokane, WA, in July. Registration is open for Faith Formation classes for the 2018 2019 school year. This includes all Religious Education for Grades K 5, Middle School Youth Ministry, High School Youth Ministry, as well as Sacrament preparation for 1st Reconciliation, 1st Communion, and Confirmation. The cost is $130 per family. Register before August 29th and save $30. Registration forms can be found on the Parish Website, in the narthex, in the Parish Office, and by emailing Janet Schwarz at: faithformaiton@stfrancisbend.org Parish Notes Parish Ministry Booklets are available in the Parish Office if you would like to find a ministry in which to be involved.
