Entering The Kingdom of Heaven Matt. 7:13-29 2 Entering The Kingdom of Heaven 1. Judging, persistent prayer and the golden rule Matt. 7:1-12 2. Who can enter the kingdom of heaven? Matt. 7:13-29 3 Jesus Teaches About Judging As with much of Jesus teaching, His words on judging are often used to prove we should never make any moral judgments about one another We should never say someone is doing something sinful because if we do, then we are the ones who will be judged But, Jesus clearly distinguishes between what type of judging He condemns and what type He approves 4 Jesus Condemns Unmerciful Selfrighteous Hypocritical Mat 7:1 "Do not judge so that you will not be judged. Mat 7:2 "For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. Jesus Condemns Unmerciful Mat 7:3 "Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Mat 7:4 "Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' and behold, the log is in your own eye? 5 6

Jesus Condemns Unmerciful Luk 6:36 "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Luk 6:37 "Do not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; pardon, and you will be pardoned. Jesus Condemns Unmerciful Joh 7:20 The crowd answered, "You have a demon! Who seeks to kill You?" Joh 7:21 Jesus answered them, "I did one deed, and you all marvel. Joh 7:22 "For this reason Moses has given you circumcision (not because it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man. 7 8 Jesus Condemns Unmerciful Joh 7:23 "If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made an entire man well on the Sabbath? Joh 7:24 "Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment." The Gospel Condemns Unmerciful Rom 2:1 Therefore you have no excuse, everyone of you who passes judgment, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. Rom 2:2 And we know that the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who practice such things. 9 10 The Gospel Condemns Unmerciful Rom 2:3 But do you suppose this, O man, when you pass judgment on those who practice such things and do the same yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God? Rom 14:10 But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you again, why do you regard your brother with contempt? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. 11 The Gospel Condemns Unmerciful Rom 14:11 For it is written, "AS I LIVE, SAYS THE LORD, EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW TO ME, AND EVERY TONGUE SHALL GIVE PRAISE TO GOD." Rom 14:12 So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God. 12

The Gospel Condemns Unmerciful Jas 2:1 My brethren, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism. Jas 2:2 For if a man comes into your assembly with a gold ring and dressed in fine clothes, and there also comes in a poor man in dirty clothes, The Gospel Condemns Unmerciful Jas 2:3 and you pay special attention to the one who is wearing the fine clothes, and say, "You sit here in a good place," and you say to the poor man, "You stand over there, or sit down by my footstool," Jas 2:4 have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil motives? 13 14 The Gospel Condemns Unmerciful Jas 4:11 Do not speak against one another, brethren. He who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge of it. Jas 4:12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and to destroy; but who are you who judge your Jesus Commands Merciful Mat 7:5 "You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye. Mat 7:6 "Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces. neighbor? 15 16 Jesus Commands Merciful Luk 6:36 "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Joh 7:24 "Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment." Joh 8:5 "Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?" Jesus Commands Merciful Joh 8:6 They were saying this, testing Him, so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground. Joh 8:7 But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up, and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." 17 18

Jesus Commands Merciful Joh 8:10 Straightening up, Jesus said to her, "Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?" Joh 8:11 She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said, "I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more."] Gal 6:1 Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. Gal 6:2 Bear one another's burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ. 19 20 1Co 5:1 It is actually reported that there is immorality among you, and immorality of such a kind as does not exist even among the Gentiles, that someone has his father's wife. 1Co 5:2 You have become arrogant and have not mourned instead, so that the one who had done this deed would be removed from your midst. 21 1Co 5:3 For I, on my part, though absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged him who has so committed this, as though I were present. 1Co 5:4 In the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are assembled, and I with you in spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus, 22 1Co 5:5 I have decided to deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 1Co 5:6 Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough? 1Co 5:11 But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler--not even to eat with such a one. 1Co 5:12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Do you not judge those who are within the church? 23 24

1Co 5:13 But those who are outside, God judges. REMOVE THE WICKED MAN FROM AMONG YOURSELVES. 2Co 2:6 Sufficient for such a one is this punishment which was inflicted by the majority, 2Co 2:7 so that on the contrary you should rather forgive and comfort him, otherwise such a one might be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. 2Co 2:8 Wherefore I urge you to reaffirm your love for him. 25 26 1Co 6:5 I say this to your shame. Is it so, that there is not among you one wise man who will be able to decide between his brethren, 1Co 6:6 but brother goes to law with brother, and that before unbelievers? 1Co 6:7 Actually, then, it is already a defeat for you, that you have lawsuits with one another. Why not rather be wronged? Why Jas 2:11 For He who said, "DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY," also said, "DO NOT COMMIT MURDER." Now if you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. Jas 2:12 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty. Jas 2:13 For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy not rather be defrauded? 27 triumphs over judgment. 28 1Ti 5:19 Do not receive an accusation against an elder except on the basis of two or three witnesses. 1Ti 5:20 Those who continue in sin, rebuke in the presence of all, so that the rest also will be fearful of sinning. 1Ti 5:21 I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of His chosen angels, to maintain these principles without bias, doing nothing in a spirit of partiality. 29 30

Entering The Kingdom of Heaven 1. Judging, persistent prayer and the golden rule Matt. 7:1-12 2. Who can enter the kingdom of heaven? Matt. 7:13-29 31 The Sermon On The Mount 1. Entering The Kingdom of Heaven Matt. 7:13-29 32 Entering The Kingdom of Heaven 1. Judging, persistent prayer and the golden rule Matt. 7:1-12 2. Who can enter the kingdom of heaven? Matt. 7:13-29 33 Jesus Teaches About Persistent Prayer Jesus makes clear that we must be persistent in our prayers trusting in a loving heavenly Father to provide us with all good things Although He knows our needs before we ask, He wants us to be dependent on and trust in Him to answer our prayers Do we have the love and faith to be persistent in our Christian life and in our prayers? 34 We Must Be Persistent In Our Christian Lives 1Co 9:24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. 1Co 9:25 Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. We Must Be Persistent In Our Christian Lives 1Co 9:26 Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; 1Co 9:27 but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified. 35 36

Mat 7:7 "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. Mat 7:8 "For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 37 Mat 7:9 "Or what man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? Mat 7:10 "Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? Mat 7:11 "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him! 38 Luk 11:5 Then He said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and goes to him at midnight and says to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves; Luk 11:6 for a friend of mine has come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him'; 39 Luk 11:7 and from inside he answers and says, 'Do not bother me; the door has already been shut and my children and I are in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.' Luk 11:8 "I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs. 40 Luk 11:9 "So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. Luk 11:10 "For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened. Luk 18:1 Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart, Luk 18:2 saying, "In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not respect man. 41 42

Luk 18:3 "There was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, 'Give me legal protection from my opponent.' Luk 18:4 "For a while he was unwilling; but afterward he said to himself, 'Even though I do not fear God nor respect man, Luk 18:5 yet because this widow bothers me, I will give her legal protection, otherwise by continually coming she will wear me out.'" 43 Luk 18:6 And the Lord said, "Hear what the unrighteous judge *said; Luk 18:7 now, will not God bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them? Luk 18:8 "I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?" 44 The Gospel Teaches We Must Be 1Th 5:16 Rejoice always; 1Th 5:17 pray without ceasing; 1Th 5:18 in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. The Gospel Teaches We Must Be 1Jn 5:14 This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 1Jn 5:15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him. 45 46 The Gospel Teaches We Must Be Jas 4:3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. Jas 4:4 You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Jesus Teaches On The Golden Rule Jesus stated what we often call The Golden Rule, treat others as you want them to treat you The Law of Moses said we should love our neighbors as ourselves Jesus requires us to actively do good to all And, if we do not, this will affect our salvation and our prayers 47 48

The Golden Rule Mat 7:11 "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him! Mat 7:12 "In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets. The Golden Rule Confirmed In The Law of Moses Lev 19:18 'You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD. 49 50 The Good Samaritan Example Luk 10:25 And a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" Luk 10:26 And He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?" 51 The Good Samaritan Example Luk 10:27 And he answered, "YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." Luk 10:28 And He said to him, "You have answered correctly; DO THIS AND YOU WILL LIVE." 52 The Good Samaritan Example Luk 10:29 But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Luk 10:30 Jesus replied and said, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead. 53 The Good Samaritan Example Luk 10:31 "And by chance a priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Luk 10:32 "Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. Luk 10:33 "But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion, 54

The Good Samaritan Example Luk 10:34 and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him. Luk 10:35 "On the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.' The Good Samaritan Example Luk 10:36 "Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers' hands?" Luk 10:37 And he said, "The one who showed mercy toward him." Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do the same." 55 56 The Gospel Teaches The Golden Rule Rom 13:8 Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. Rom 13:9 For this, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT COVET," and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR The Gospel Teaches The Golden Rule Rom 13:10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." 57 58 The Golden Rule and Its Effect On Prayer Joh 15:7 "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. Mat 6:14 "For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. Mat 6:15 "But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions. 59 The Golden Rule and Its Effect On Prayer 1Pe 3:7 You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered. 1Pe 3:8 To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit; 60

The Golden Rule and Its Effect On Prayer 1Pe 3:9 not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing. 1Pe 3:10 For, "THE ONE WHO DESIRES LIFE, TO LOVE AND SEE GOOD DAYS, MUST KEEP HIS TONGUE FROM EVIL AND HIS LIPS FROM SPEAKING DECEIT. The Golden Rule and Its Effect On Prayer 1Pe 3:11 "HE MUST TURN AWAY FROM EVIL AND DO GOOD; HE MUST SEEK PEACE AND PURSUE IT. 1Pe 3:12 "FOR THE EYES OF THE LORD ARE TOWARD THE RIGHTEOUS, AND HIS EARS ATTEND TO THEIR PRAYER, BUT THE FACE OF THE LORD IS AGAINST THOSE WHO DO EVIL." 61 62 Entering The Kingdom of Heaven 1. Judging, persistent prayer and the golden rule Matt. 7:1-12 2. Who can enter the kingdom of heaven? Matt. 7:13-29 63
