St. Mary on the Hill February 14, 2016 This Saturday, February 20, 2016 Pilgrimage to the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist Celebrating the Year of Mercy The Most Rev. Gregory J Hartmayer, OFM Conv., Bishop of the Diocese of Savannah, joyfully invites the diocesan family to a Pilgrimage for the Jubilee Year of Mercy. This afternoon of prayer, reconciliation and celebration of God s mercy will be held Saturday, February 20 from 2:00 until 4:30 pm at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah, GA. Fr. Tim McKeown who was commissioned this week by Pope Francis at the Vatican to be a Missioner of Mercy will be the preacher for this special event. If you ve not made your bus reservation yet, consider driving down to Savannah with your family and make this a special Lenten pilgrimage. I am happy that Fr. Meza will be the Spiritual Director for all those from our parish who will be attending this extraordinary event. Lenten Lunch Time Talk 12:00 noon This Wednesday, February 17, 2016 Deacon Ken Maleck - Healing Broken Marriages A Reformed Annulment Process The Jubilee of Mercy invites us to contemplate the mercy of God revealed to us in the face of Jesus, his Son. How can we show others the mercy of God? We say that God is compassionate, but we ignore the poor. We say that God loves us and has mercy on us, but we hold grudges against our friends. Our actions need to authentically reflect God s mercy. Our Lenten Lunch Time Talks will explore the different ways that people are living out that mercy every day! In his letter announcing the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis reminds us that Mercy is concrete - the mercy of God is not an abstract idea, but a concrete reality with which he reveals his love as of that of a father or a mother, moved to the very depths out of love for their child. It is hardly an exaggeration to say that this is a visceral love. It gushes forth from the depths naturally, full of tenderness and compassion, indulgence and mercy. Last summer Pope Francis issued a powerful call for the church to embrace Catholics who have divorced and remarried. The church is called to be always the open house of the Father. No closed doors! No closed doors! the Pope said. He and many bishops want the Church to be more merciful toward Catholics whose first marriages have failed. Many have criticized the current process of obtaining an annulment for being long, complex and in some places, too expensive. In this First Lenten Lunch Time talk, Deacon Ken will explain the reforms that Pope Francis has introduced to the Annulment Process at the beginning of the Year of Mercy. These Lunchtime Talks on God s Mercy in Action will be held on the Wednesdays of Lent, if you d like a free lunch during the talk, please call the parish office to reserve your meal. This is the schedule of Speakers and their Topics for the Talks: February 24 th Fr. Meza (Welcoming the Stranger) March 2 nd March 9 th March 16 th Katie Conner (The Scandal of Human Trafficking) Dr. Pat Moliter (The Slavery of Pornography) Dr. Walter Moore (Health Care for the Poor) This is one of those crazy weeks. Fr. Meza is presently in his hometown of Mexico City for the Papal Visit. He will be involved with broadcasting the Holy Father s visit for a radio network. Pope Francis will visit Ciudad Juarez and the border area near El Paso on Wednesday at which point Fr. Meza will cross over the border and fly home from El Paso on Thursday. And hopefully by Saturday he will be rested up enough to lead the members of our Faith Community on the Diocesan Pilgrimage to the Cathedral in Savannah. Meanwhile, I leave on Monday for Mexico City to lead the U.S. delegation of priests to the First Pan American Assembly of the Jesus Caritas Fraternity of Priests which will take place in Cuernavaca, Mexico. We ve invited the Pope to join us but it looks like he ll already be pretty busy hanging around with Fr. Meza. I will return next Sunday and I am most grateful to Frs. Lou Lindsey, Michael Hull, John Markham, and David Arnoldt for minding the store while Fr. Meza and I are down south. Please behave for them and please, please, please make a generous response to the Bishop s Annual Appeal as soon as possible. On the Way Home: In the Gospel the devil suggests that God would save Jesus if he recklessly, for no good reason, threw himself from the Temple. Jesus rejected the idea of testing God s love and care for him. Do we ever test God s love and care? On this Valentine s Day, who do you love in a special way?

WORSHIP Parish Mission Mission leader Deacon Mark Cesnik St. Catherine of Siena Institute Discipleship and the call to conversion are at the heart of the parish mission, since everything else flows from them: stewardship, the discernment of gifts and vocation, prayer, involvement in the parish, and individual work to carry God s love into the world. Consequently, all of Deacon Mark s mission is crafted to have an evangelizing effect on the members of the parish. Using scripture, the rich teaching of the Church, and reflections on his own journey of faith and the lives of disciples who have influenced him, Deacon Mark attempts to present Jesus invitation to each one of us to become his disciple in ways that are personal, fresh, engaging, and often surprisingly amusing. There is no charge for the workshop, but donations are accepted. Please call your reservation to 706-825-0020 (leave your name and number attending) by Tuesday, March 1, 2016. Centering Prayer is a type of contemplative prayer that helps one to still the mind and in that stillness, to open up to God at the deepest level of our being. It is a method of complete surrender to God. In that stillness and surrender, a level of intimacy with the Divine can be experienced that cannot be found through thoughts and words alone. Contemplative prayer helps us to experience the true reality of God and to rest in the peace of God that surpasses all understanding. (Phillippians 4:7) The method of Centering Prayer was developed by Fr. Thomas Keating and two other priests from the Trappist order in the 1970s. It is a simplified version of the type of contemplative prayer practiced in Christian monasteries for many hundreds of years. Saints Overseas Lenten Project Join our parish family in dedicating your Lenten prayers and sacrifices this Lent for the needs of the children of Goala, Ethiopia. Sister Mary Beth Lloyd, Missions Director, also requests that we remember the mothers who will lose their lives to AIDS in the coming weeks, knowing they will leave their children behind. Please visit our display in the Narthex where you will see a large cross. Take one of the small paper crosses, write down the Lenten resolution you wish to offer for these mothers and children, and pin it to the large cross. We will take a photo of this display to send to the schoolchildren in Goala. Watch the bulletin for other simple ways to reach out to our saints overseas throughout Lent and Easter and thank you for all you are doing for these little ones!
