Depot Dispatch July2018 Volume IV Issue 7 Page 2 Future Plans of PRRM At the July meeting we will present future plans of the Painesville Railroad Museum expansion including the Lionel Experience and Event Center. This 6,000 square foot expansion includes one of the most comprehensive Lionel Post War model train collections in the U.S. and an Event Center with seating capacity of 200 guest. The Event Center with a full commercial kitchen, will be available for hosting club meetings, off site business meeting, small weddings, and other social events. Caboose Windows This will be an interactive, historical and educational facility for all ages. The project cost of this expansion is $3,200,000.00. We already have over $1,000,000.00 pledged. We are now in the process of looking for additional sponsors, no matter the size of the donation, to reach our goal. The Painesville Railroad Museum is a 501c3 non -profit and all donation are tax deductible under the extent of the law. Be sure to attend the next meeting to learn all the details. Back Doors The window in the cupola of the caboose has been completed and installed. Thank you Carl Neff for completing this project. The back doors of the express room have ha new look. They have been scraped and repaired. Great job for all the restoration crew who helped on this project. 2

Depot Dispatch July2018 Volume IV Issue 7 Page 3 Eagle Scout Project Zak Etzel is a Life Scout from Boy Scout Troop 111 in Grafton. He is working on his Eagle Scout project for the Painesville Railroad Museum. The reason why he has chosen us is he has attended many of our events and have notice that we have a lack of seating. His project for us is making four convertible picnic tables and two standard picnic tables. One of the requirements of the Eagle Scout is that he needs to raise funds for this project and then donate them to us. Zak estimates his project at $800.00. He will be selling beef sticks to raise his funds, order form is in this month s Depot Dispatch. Please consider supporting his Eagle Project and the Painesville Railroad Museum by purchasing Beef Sticks from Zak (only $1.00 each). His goal is to have the tables ready for the Depot Birthday Party on August 4, 2018 If you have any questions for Zak, you can contact him at 440-774-2051 or email him at vettenutte@frontier.com 3

Depot Dispatch July2018 Volume IV Issue 7 Page 6 Ashtabula Station - Sad Day A sad day indeed came on the last day of May. The Ashtabula Depot came to a very unjust end. It was built by the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad in 1901. The same railroad that built the Painesville Depot. CSX Railroad workers tore it down Thursday (May 31, 2018) because of ongoing safety concerns. A local non-profit group, known as 21st Century Ashtabula Depot Rail Experience, formed three years ago and advocated turning the depot into a limited, working Amtrak Station. Though city officials backed the plan, it never came to fruition. Some of the Station History is John F. Kennedy's train stopped during his campaign for president in 1960. The depot has additional historical value to the area as the station is within 1,000 feet of the deadliest train bridge collapse in U.S. history, which killed 83 people in 1876. All that is left by the end of the day. 6

Depot Dispatch July2018 Volume IV Issue 7 Page 10 This will be our 3 rd annual Railroad Memorabilia Show. The show will be held on August 26, 2018 from 10 am to 5 pm. The Railroad Memorabilia Show is designed to have collectors show off their private collections of railroad related items. These could be from railroad signals, plate setting ware (Dinner Ware) that was used in the dining cars, railroad lanterns, paper work from different railroads, conductor hats, engineer hats, etc. Some items will be for display only by private collectors and some items will be available for purchase. By displaying Railroad Artifacts, we can provide the history of Railroading and how it had a great influence on our history and the importance that the Painesville Depot once served. Some items will be for display only by private collectors and some items will be available for purchase. This show will provide the history of the Painesville depot from 1851 to present and how the railroads has influence the City of Painesville and our nation. See the Collinwood Engine 999. This is a replica of the famous New York Central engine that in May of 1893 set the land speed record of 112.5 mph. This will also give us a chance of showing off the progress of restoration that is taking place at the Depot. This program is funded in part by a grant from The Lake County Visitor s Bureau Arts and Culture Fund to further participation in, and awareness of, arts and culture in Lake County, and Robert S. Morrison Foundation, News-Herald.
