Week of March 6, 2011 Lessons for the Leader Take a few minutes and go for a walk. As you walk, examine things around you. Would you change anything about the world God created? If you were given the chance to create something, what would you create? Read Genesis 1:1-25. Imagine the mind of God as He spoke into existence the solar system, oceans, mountains, plants, animals, and all the other items created from days one to five. Reflect on how many types of animals exist. What about plants? Consider the differences in the types of mountains from the Rockies to the Alps to the Appalachians. What type of power do you see God demonstrate through His creative wonders? Read Genesis 1:26-31. What does it mean to you that you were created in the image of God? How does it make you feel to know that God pronounced His creation of mankind as "very good"? Read Genesis 2:1-3. How long has it been since you rested? Reflect on the opportunity you have to teach children about the creative power of God. In today's world, children hear the conflict between theories of evolution and creation. How can you help children understand that the Bible teaches God created by simply speaking? How can you help children learn to appreciate and care for God's creation? Pray for each child by name. Ask God to help each child experience the wonder of His power through the natural world. Pray that God will place in each child's heart and mind the foundation of faith in believing God created the world by speaking. What do these symbols mean? 1a Application Activities Format: Follow the numbers with arrows for a 30-minute, large group plus 20-minute Application Activities format. 1 Large Group Only Format: Follow all the numbers for a 45- to 60-minute large group only format. On the first day, God said, "Let there be light" [children uncover and open eyes]. God called the light day. Then God called the darkness night [children close and open their eyes]. On the second day, God took some of the water on the earth [display bag of water] and created sky [display sky with clouds]. God left the rest of the water on the earth. On the third day, God said, "Let the waters on the earth gather together; and let the dry land appear" [display bags of soil and water]. God called the dry land earth and the gathered water seas. of tree and flower [display tree and flower]. He gave each plant its own kind of seed so it could continue to grow. On the fourth day, God created the sun, moon, and stars [display sun, moon, and star]. The sun gave light in the day. The moon and stars shone at night [children close and open eyes]. On the fifth day, God said, "Let the waters and the sky be filled with many kinds of living things" [display bird and fish]. God created the animals of the sea and the birds that fly. On the sixth day, God created all of the animals and creatures that crawl upon the earth. Then God made people! He made a man and a woman [display man and woman]. God gave the man and woman choices, and planned for them to take care of all the plants and animals. At the end of the sixth day, God looked at the earth, the sky, the oceans, the rivers, the dry land, the sun, the moon, the stars, and all living things [display world]. God was very pleased with what He had created. Explain: "Use the rocks, beans, and other items to decorate your gardens." Talk about how the children can clean their garden and start again. Prompt the children to tell some of their favorite things God has made. Create a list on the paper of the children's favorite things. Comment: "We can learn God created everything. We should thank God for the world He made. 'God saw everything He had made and it was very good.' Genesis 1:31. Display your gardens and say thank You to God for creating all things." Assist children with putting their completed gardens in the ziplock bags or wrapping with plastic wrap to take home. Lead children to clean the area. Pray, thanking God for the children's favorite things He created. Week of March 6, 2011

Scissors, Giant Game Floor Mat*, index cards, tape or glue Print "Genesis 1:31" (CD). Print "15 Things" (CD). Cut apart pictures and glue to individual index cards. Quiz children on the parts of the reference (book, chapter, and verse). Lead the children to name things God created. Instruct: "We'll take turns tossing the beanbag onto the mat. When your beanbag lands on a pocket, remove the card from the pocket. Do not let anyone except me see your card. You will play out or give clues for everyone to guess what picture is on your card. If your card has a question mark, everyone will say the Bible verse together. If your card is blank, everyone will say, 'Thank You, God, for creating everything.' " Invite the first child to toss the beanbag and give verbal or physical clues. Return the card facedown to the pocket. Play until each card is revealed. Play again or play the next game. Say: "Now, let's play a game like 'I Spy,' but we will say, 'I know God created something ' and then describe the object." Say the phrase and then describe a tree. Invite children to say the phrase and describe things. Say: "God created everything. 'God saw everything He had made and it was very good.' Genesis 1:31. Worship Through Exploration and Discovery Make Animal Feeders Talk about some of the children's favorite animals. Distribute chenille stems. Say: "God created many different animals. Let's make animal feeders for small animals such as birds, squirrels, and chipmunks. Watch as I show you how to make the first loop." Demonstrate how to loop one end of the chenille stem [fold over and twist so a small loop is formed]. Assist the children with their loops. Instruct: "Fill your chenille stems with the cereal. We'll hook the other end through the loop and twist to close it. Make either one animal feeder with several interlocking loops or several individual loops to hang in different places outside your houses."
