Page 2 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY Tamil Cinema and Music - 22 Music for the movie Udayanan Vasavadatta was composed by Papanasam Sivan and the up-and-coming music director C. R. Subburaman. The film had fifteen songs, out of which GNB sang seven in addition to a couple of duets. Those had, in fact, been composed for M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar and some had even been recorded by him, but the recording exercise was again gone through with GNB. But somehow the music did not jell and created no impact. And then GNB bade goodbye to movies. Even though he was more handsome than most heroes of his day and sang well, he did not make an impact as a film actor. He took direction well and, as we went along, he was improving as an actor. Actually I expected him to become a successful hero but somehow it did not seem to happen, Ellis R. Dungan, who directed him in Sakunthalai, told this writer in a long chat in 1994. A major drawback of GNB was his predominantly Brahmin accent which he could not shed in spite of his best efforts. With his looks, charm, singing talents and skills, GNB could have gone a long way in Tamil Cinema but sadly he did not. Well, that s the way the ball bounces in movies, and in life! MLV - A HOMAGE Madras Lalithangi Vasanthakumari was born in 1928 into a musical family. Her mother was Lalithangi, a noted musician of her day and father was Ayyasami Iyer, a scholar and teacher of music. Thus music was in her genes and she began to learn classical Carnatic music even as a tiny tot. As an attractive lass she accompanied her mother in her concerts singing seconds ( pinpaattu ). In her teens she became the disciple of GNB and it was a turning point in her life and career. She imbibed all that was best in her guru s musical genius and added her own to the inheritance. (During the early 1990s, this writer made a two-part (60-minute) TV Serial on MLV, Thiraivaanil Oru Isai Thenee! telecast by Doordarshan Kendra, Madras. It was very well received and won much praise. In it, R. Krishnamurthy (her husband) and Srividya (her daughter) spoke on camera about MLV with much emotion. V. N. Sundaram, P. Leela and Tamil film star G. Sakunthala (for whom MLV sang in Ellis R. Dungan s hit and cult film Manthiri Kumari ) also spoke recalling their association with MLV.) MLV was to have acted in M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar s come back - movie Raja Mukthi (1948) which was made in Poona (now Pune). After Bhagavathar was arrested in December 1944 for his alleged involvement in the sensational and historic Lakshmikantham murder case, he underwent a 30-month term in prison and was acquitted as Not guilty in April 1947. Then he promoted his own film unit Narendra Pictures and the first film was Raja Mukthi. MLV went to Poona for acting but, for many reasons, she chose not to act and instead she took her bow as playback singer in this film. She sang duets with Bhagavathar and the songs became popular while the movie itself flopped in spite of its prophetic title. MLV sang Kulakodi thazhaikka (raga Ramapriya); Enna Aanandham (Simhendramadhyamam, duet with MKT); Santoshamaai anbar (duet with P. Bhanumathi); Araro (Yamankalyani) and Ingum angum (Madhyamaavathi, duet with MKT). The lyrics were by Papanasam Sivan and C. R. Subburaman was the music director. Unusually in this film there was a song trainer. That was Alathur Sivasubramaniam, one of the two famous Alathur Brothers. The director was the well-known filmmaker of 1930-1940s, Raja Chandrasekhar who had directed MKT in the hit film Ashok Kumar (1941). One of the immortal classical Carnatic music-based melodies of Tamil cinema is the evergreen hit song Ellaam inba mayam, sung as a duet by MLV and P. Leela in the film Manamagal ( 1951) produced and directed by the cult-figure and comedian supremo, N. S. Krishnan. (To be continued) REQUEST TO READERS! Please help us to serve you better! The stretch of Burkit Road between its junctions with Roadside eateries must follow hygienic practices Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has announced guidelines for roadside eateries and fast food shops in the country and sent it to the National Food Safety Authority. (Mambalam Times had carried a report on roadside eateries last week). If implemented, street food vendors will be forced to adopt better hygienic practices. All mobile and fixed roadside eateries will come under the purview of guidelines under IS 2492, the hygiene standard for restaurants. Quality of raw materials for food preparation, transportation and storage of food items, locations of street food stalls, etc will be checked under the new guidelines. Currently, street food vendors do not adhere to any guidelines or standards for food safety. Many of them are situated near drains and dustbins. Even the cooking oil is procured from eateries which sell their used oil to roadside vendors. And the food is stocked in shabby conditions, putting at risk the health of consumers. K Anbarasu (Deputy Director General, BIS, Southern Region) said that hygiene in densely populated areas is still a challenge for health initiatives. The new guidelines and storage rules for water, milk, tea or coffee powder, fruits, vegetables and meat are expected to bring an important change in street food operations. Kitchen utensils and cutting tools should be clean and disinfected. Personal hygiene of vendors will also be checked. Use of newspapers for packaging will be stopped, said a BIS official. BIS officials said food inspectors from local bodies should enforce these guidelines for thousands of such shops in the cities. However, senior officials in the Chennai Corporation said there is a huge shortage of manpower in the Food Safety and Control Department. We are short of staff to even conduct inspections based on written complaints. Without appointing adequate officers, it will be difficult to enforce the new guidelines, said a senior official. Travel agent dupes siddha practitioners About 70 siddha practitioners from Tiruppur, Coimbatore and Palladam were cheated of about Rs. 58 lakhs Dhandapani Street and Venkatanarayana Road was made one way with entry from by Runway Air Travels (1 st Street, Chintamani, East Anna Nagar) on the promise of taking them to attend the World Siddha conference in Madley Road junction when the Usman Road flyover was opened. Malaysia starting on July 21 on payment of Rs. 8000-Rs. 9000 each for return tickets. They were asked to transfer the money to the travel agent s bank account. Police are searching for Annadurai, Issac Selvaraj and Senthil Kumar who operated Runway Air Travels. The group of siddha practitioners, led by Sampath Kumar of Coimbatore, was directed to assemble in a community hall on Nana Street, T. Nagar on July 11 and told that the agent would come to escort them to the airport for the early July 12 flight. When nobody showed up till late in the evening, Sampath Kumar tried calling the agents. When no one responded, he became suspicious and called the police. Police could not find the agents in their address. Later the stretch between Venkatanarayana Road and Mooparappan Street junction In Chennai, a majority of the poor depend on street food as restaurants are beyond their reach. Sumesh Jha, a construction labourer who has been staying in Chennai for four years, says he gets a chicken biriyani for Rs. 35 from a street vendor in Egmore. When I get Rs. 350 for a day s work, how can I spend Rs. 100 or 150 for a biriyani from a restaurant? he asked. Report courtesy The Times of India Sarees for 200 sumangalis on Monday R. M. A. SADANAND To those fellows like me who hate death sentence as the lurking bestiality from the stone age, whether it is Surjeet Singh or Sabarjit Singh who escaped the noose, a round of rasagolla to the accompaniment of the birds chirping at dawn is an energiser. I love life so much that I can t squash even a dirty cockroach stealing in through the bathroom drain cover to start a hundred plus colony in my home. When our TV media fell over each other to gladden my heart with the news of Sabarjit s imminent homecoming after his Pak jail sojourn of dozens of years, all they perhaps heard was Singh and assumed that all Singhs in Pak jails will be exchanged for the brave new world s heroes like Kasab, the lone survivor of the killer squad. Well, somebody made an ass of himself by emulating good old Shakespeare and asking himself What s in a name? Sarabjit is as good or bad as Surjeet. This mix up of killer names must have plunged the Sarabjit family to the depths from the hope so artificially created. Do I hear some fame hunting lawyer smelling a juicy P.I.L suit against the TV and other news media for the soap bubble hope that they created while the Pak chaps were laughing themselves hoarse and silly at the joke. Whatever be the hangee s name, he deserves the commutation as an act of recompense and grace from Pakistan which, of late, is fencing with its Supreme Court. The graduation from the rule of flaw to the rule of law, now that soldiers are not ruling Pakistan, would turn would-be-kasabs to saner ways to earn a living, without follow the Roman hero Casca who plunged the dagger into Caesar with the salutation, Speak hands for me. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Sir, - Of late more and more private organizations, tourist taxi operators, textile showrooms and beauty parlours are installing No parking boards in front of the main entrance of flat complexes and along fences. Even schools and places of worship are not spared. Chaotic traffic I suggest that vehicles coming from Ashok Nagar and K. K. Nagar go straight to 7 th Avenue, Ashok Nagar and turn into 2 nd or 1 st street of Postal Colony and reach Ayodhya Mandapam to ease the flow of heavy traffic. There have been quite a few accidents due to continuous flow of vehicles. Recently, an elderly woman fell down when she failed to notice a vehicle turning from Lake View Road into 3 rd Street. - Gemini Shyam, 102/194, Lake View Road, West Mambalam Unauthorized No parking boards This practice is rampant in West Mambalam. The police should keep a close vigil and initiate stringent action against such acts. Meanwhile, flat owners can themselves remove such boards. R. Ramadurai, 35/2, Chakrapani Street, West Mambalam Corporation creates model speedbreaker With work on grid system of roads under the mega city development mission gaining momentum in various parts of the city, Chennai Corporation commenced training for all its engineers by creating a model of a standard speedbreaker on the premises of Ripon Buildings. The model speedbreaker has been constructed according to Indian Roads Congress (IRC) standards and all new speedbreakers will adhere to them. The civic body had identified over 400 speedbreakers for redesign by incorporating safety features following the death of State Co-operation Minister Sellur K. In a bid to crack down on adulteration of petrol and diesel, the Tamilnadu Government authorized officials of several departments on July 17 to take action against those involved in fuel adulteration, hoarding and other related malpractices. Assistant Commissioners of the Civil Supplies Department, all officials of the rank of Tahsildars and above in the Revenue Department, all taluk supply officers, inspectors and above in the Labour Department and Deputy Superintendents of Police and above in the Police Department are authorised to initiate action against the fuel mafia under the provisions of the Essential Commodities Act and Motor Spirit and High Speed Diesel (Regulation of Supply and Distribution and Prevention of Malpractice) Order. The order is the outcome of a proposal sent by the Commissioner of Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department in this regard. Adulteration of petrol and diesel, both at points of sale and during transportation, is rampant across the country as there are several close substitutes for these Foundation courses for engineering entrance exams Anugraham Classes (20 Manikkam Street, West Mambalam) is conducting specialised foundation coaching classes for Stds. 8 and 9 students towards IIT- JEE. The course includes regular classroom lectures, tests, discussion Raju s son in a motorcycle accident at a speedbreaker on NSC Bose Road a few weeks ago. Most of the identified speedbreakers were found to be badly designed and not adhering to IRC standards. Over 30 speedbreakers were found to be badly designed in Sholinganallur zone. In northern zones such as Tiruvotriyur, most of the 30 identified speedbreakers were found to be unauthorised. Work on new speedbreakers will start after the training sessions. The Corporation is likely to commence identifying spots along the newly-developed road grids where speedbreakers are required. Report courtesy The Hindu Crackdown on petrol, diesel adulteration fuels. While kerosene is the commonly used adulterant for diesel, naphtha is mixed with petrol. At open market prices of these fuels, adulteration of petrol helps save 20 per liter and diesel 15 per liter. Various surveys have shown that much of the petrol sold through outlets is adulterated and has a much lower octane level than the specified 87%. Many customers buy fuel only from select pumps, most often from outlets owned and operated by petroleum manufacturing companies. It is estimated that pumps selling adulterated fuel earn a minimum of Rs. 25,000 a day. A study conducted by a private agency a few years ago estimated that about 30% of kerosene supplied through the public distribution system in the country for domestic use is diverted for adulteration of diesel and blackmarketing. Apart from wrecking engines of new generation vehicles, adulterated fuel is also a drain on the State s exchequer as it loses on sales tax. Theft of fuel from supply tankers is another rampant menace on highways. This is done by local outlaws in co-ordination with lorry crew. of test papers and prompt feedback on performance, study materials and question banks.
