Worship Worship Today Excerpt from the Sermon Journal, Monday, February 26, 2018 Written by Pastor Tom Harrison The Lion Revelation 5:5 is no cowardly Lion like in Oz. This is the strong one the great King of Heaven. He is the Lion of the tribe of Judah. He is transcendent. He is Lord. In The Chronicles of Narnia (C.S. Lewis wonderful series of books) the Lion, Aslan, represents Jesus. As is said in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, when Lucy asks if he is a safe lion, Mrs. Beaver tells her, of course he s not safe, but he is good. He s the King, I tell you! Aslan tells Lucy in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader she will see him again, only on earth he is known by a different name. She must learn to know Aslan by that name (Jesus). He adds: This was the very reason why you were brought to Narnia, that by knowing me here for a little, you may know me better there. Most readings this week are from the Old Testament and talk about the nature of a lion. The lion is not only strong but is also worthy. Something to Think About: Have you ever read the book or seen the movie The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe? If so, discuss your favorite part. If not, consider watching it. Children love it, but it is the story of Jesus. 1 Peter 5:8-14 switches metaphors by describing our enemy as a roaring lion, instead of our Savior. What does Peter say we should do to resist this lion? Finally, describe in your own words what transcendent means. Why is this such an important word? Digging Deeper into Worship, Part 3 Another challenge to worship stems from being in close, personal relationship with our Savior. Because the Lord grants us access to Himself, and Jesus (in the Gospels) was so approachable, we may be tempted to lower the Almighty to our level in worship. However, when God set an earthly throne among the people of His kingdom, He prescribed for them how to worship in a holy manner. At the first formally organized worship service, Aaron s sons offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, contrary to his command. They died on the spot (Leviticus 10:1-3). This may seem harsh, but it bears similarity to the sudden deaths of Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11). In both cases the Lord was inaugurating a new era, and these new communities had to learn they existed for God, not vice versa. When the Lord struck Aaron s sons He said, Among those who approach me, I will show myself holy; in the sight of all the people, I will be honored. We may, through Jesus, have friendship with God, but we are still His subjects. He sets the standards for His kingdom. In service today, humbly and reverently honor the Lord with the awe He deserves.
