This is a report term and I am confident that all children will quickly settle back into the routines required for successful learning and growth. This has been a short yet productive week. School staff were engaged in professional learning on Monday; understanding various learning styles and using this knowledge to inform teacher planning. Today, students participated in the annual Cross Country Carnival. It was pleasing to see so many students engage in a spirit of friendly competition and an effort to excel. I was very impressed in the way many students encouraged each other in their own race and in other age group races. Sportsmanship is an important quality for us all to develop. I had the privilege of running in 3 races, Prep boys and girls and the Year 1 girl s race. Although I didn t set any PB s, I felt the encouragement of the community will me across the line. This spirit of encouragement was evident in all races. Next week s new Newsletter will have many photos and information identifying key performances and the Champion House. Two significant school events on the horizon are; Term 2 Week 1 Friday 20th April 2018 ANZAC Day Liturgy Tuesday 8.40am Next week we will be publishing a new platform for the delivery of the school Newsletter. Religious Life of the School ~ News from the APRE ~ 20th of April 2018 The Season of Easter Great to see all our students back at school after a terrific Easter break! On the first Sunday of the holidays, it is hoped that EB (Easter Bunny) came, that chocolate and Hot Cross buns were eaten (in moderation) and that loving, peaceful and quality family time was spent. The core Good News that Christians celebrated on Easter Sunday was and is Jesus rising to new life and new beginnings. At Sunday Mass, we were urged us to spread the Good News of Jesus, to give life to others, as Jesus gave his physical life for us. In the eyes of the Church, Easter does not just last a day or weekend. It s a whole season of great celebration and joy. Easter lasts for 50 days (seven weeks) after Easter Sunday, where the liturgical colour, the colour of our classroom prayer cloths, changes to white. The English word Pentecost is a translation of the Greek word pentekostos, which means fifty. It comes from the ancient Christian expression pentekoste hemera, which means fiftieth day. But Christians did not invent the phrase fiftieth day. Rather, they borrowed it from Greek-speaking Jews who used the phrase to refer to a Jewish holiday. This holiday was known as the Festival of Weeks, or, more simply, Weeks (Shavuot in Hebrew). So, Easter will conclude on Pentecost Sunday, which will be the weekend of Week 5 this Term. We will be holding a Whole School Mass to celebrate this event. Precise Mass time and date to be announced. An Easter Prayer (source: Catching Fire website) God of Life, You broke the bonds of death By raising Jesus from the dead Through the power of the Holy Spirit. Bring us all through the darkness of fear and doubt, Into the marvellous light of your freedom and truth. We ask this in the name of Jesus, Your Son, And in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Anzac Day Prayer ~ Next Tuesday 24 th of April 8:40am~ Area Just as Jesus laid down his life to show God s way of love, mercy and peace for us, we also remember the Australian men and women who came before us that served or laid down their lives for peace as ANZACS next week. We pay respect to those that are in the Armed Services today that are currently serving our country both here and abroad. We also greatly respect and empathize with the people of other countries who have also fought (there are no winners in violence and war). We will be gathering as a school at the time listed above. All are warmly invited to join with us in prayer and a minutes silence to remember and honour those who fought to project our beautiful land. If there is anyone in our school community who you would like to be kept in our prayers, whether this be in the classroom or at whole school prayer on every 2nd Friday afternoon, please let us know! If this is too large, please approach your child s teacher and ask for the class to pray for the person at a smaller level. Prayer can be used for all moments of life! May Jesus walk with you during this Easter Season! Upcoming Religious Life of the School (RLOS) Events Mother s Day prayer & morning tea ~ Week 4 Josh Mullane (APRE) 3

Social Emotional Learning No one can grow if he does not accept his smalness (Pope Francis) Term Two is now here and our journey in SEL continues with all classes undertaking new units within the Second Steps Program. The focus for Prep-Y3 this term is Empathy where they will explore themes around- Identifying and understanding Feelings, exploring how others may have different feelings to us and accepting these, and showing care and concern for others through helping (showing compassion). The Year Y4-6 classes will explore Problem Solving. Themes in this unit centre around identifying a problem, making a plan and the steps involved in solving a problem, taking responsibility for your actions and dealing with peer pressure. These units integrate nicely with our Whole School Focus Areas the Learning Disposition of Growth Mindset and the Mercy Value of Service as we work together to establish mindsets, behaviours and ways of interacting that optimise both learning and relationships. Crucial elements for being successful! Our school continues to use a Mindfulness Quote each week this term where students, staff and families are encouraged to embrace the messages that help set up our spaces, thoughts and feelings. This week our quote is- I am Here. Consider how this might/could apply to you (personally or in your work), your children, your family as we open our hearts and mind to being present to the world and each other. Have a wonderful first week back everyone! Mindfulness Practice Yours in Social Emotional learning, Gayle Duncan(LSEL) Hug someone - really HUG them And take 3 BIG breaths together. Even if they don t breathe with you, your breathing will ground them. 4

Many parents and teachers are concerned about cyberbullying. It is a serious problem that can hurt young people, families and school communities. Cyberbullying is also a complex problem that is often invisible to parents and teachers. In February the Premier appointed a group of Queenslanders who are passionate about stopping cyberbullying of young people. The Queensland Anti-Cyberbullying Taskforce is chaired by well-known author and commentator, Madonna King, and includes members with knowledge and expertise in education, youth health and wellbeing, law, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, disability and families. The Taskforce needs your help to develop a framework for Queensland to help reduce cyberbullying of young people. They want to hear from parents, carers, students, teachers and other experts in schools. In particular, the Taskforce wants to hear about your ideas to: prevent or reduce cyberbullying support people affected by cyberbullying of young people. How to have your say Email the Taskforce at antibullyingtaskforce@premiers.qld.gov.au Upload your ideas as a submission on the Taskforce website https://qld.gov.au/cyberbullyingtaskforce Come to a public forum in 12 Queensland locations including Brisbane, Cairns, Rockhampton and Charleville. For information about forums visit https://qld.gov.au/cyberbullyingtaskforce Everyone can be part of the stand against cyberbullying. Ms King and the Taskforce members look forward to hearing from you. 5
