GOD GATHERS HIS PEOPLE Interlude Carolyn McClane, pianist Welcome and Announcements Elder Marianne Sharp, Worship Leader Ringing of the Chimes Prelude My Heart Ever Faithful J. S. Bach Air from the Cantata for Pentecost Bringing of the Light Michael Eldridge, acolyte Kara Eldridge, crucifer THE WORSHIP OF GOD *Call to Worship One: Scripture tells us of how, time and again, God s Spirit has been poured out upon God s people, All: renewing, re-creating, and reinvigorating the community of faith. One: On this Pentecost Sunday, we come to this place and time of worship confident that God is with us. All: The Holy Spirit will be our guide, our comfort, and our truth. One: With the universal church in all its history and diversity, we pray: All: Come, Holy Spirit. Refresh and renew us in hope, peace, joy, and love. *Hymn of Praise No. 298 Come, Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove St. Agnes

*Affirmation of Faith One: Christians, what do we believe as Cumberland Presbyterians? All: We believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended to the grave. The third day He arose from the dead. He ascended into heaven, where He shall sit at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from where He shall judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the everlasting life. Amen. *Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen. Greatorex Prayers of the People The Lord s Prayer (In Unison) Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Musical Response No. 821 Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy upon us. (Choir & Congregation) Assurance of Pardon I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. *The Doxology Old Hundredth Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. *Prayer of Dedication and Thanksgiving Gereldean Carmichael PRESENTATION OF GOD S WORD Anthem Come, Gentle Spirit arr. Jean Williams Culpepper Come, gentle Spirit, come; I have need of thy healing grace. Come, make me pure within; all my sins erase. Let them, like bonds set free, nevermore my captors be. Humbly to thee I bow; come gentle Spirit, come. Come, gentle Jesus, come, I have need of thy perfect peace. May calm repose begin, all my fears release; Let them on wings take flight, nevermore to cloud my sight. Not only for this day; come, gentle Jesus, stay. Children s Message Marianne Sharp *Hymn of the Word On Pentecost They Gathered Words written in 1981 by Jane Parker Huber Lancashire On Pentecost they gathered quite early in the day, a band of Christ s disciples to worship, sing, and pray. A mighty wind came blowing, filled all the swirling air, and tongues of fire aglowing inspired each person there. The people all around them were startled and amazed to understand their language, as Christ the Lord they praised. What universal message, what great good news was here? That Christ, once dead, is risen to vanquish all our fear.

God pours the Holy Spirit on all who would believe, on women, men, and children who would God s grace receive. That Spirit knows no limit, bestowing life and power. The church, formed and reforming, responds in every hour. The Reading Of The Word New Testament Lesson Acts 2:1-21 The Holy Spirit Comes At Pentecost Narrator: When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: All: Aren t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues! Narrator: 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, All: What does this mean? 13 Narrator: Some, however, made fun of them and said, All: Narrator: They have had too much wine. 14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd:

All: Narrator: Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. 19 I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. 21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Old Testament Lesson Romans 8:14-17 Life Through The Spirit 14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. *Gospel John 14:8-17 Jesus Promises The Holy Spirit 8 Philip said, Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us. 9 Jesus answered: Don t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, Show us the Father? 10 Don t you believe that I am in

the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. 15 If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. Leader: This is the Word of God for the people of God. People: Thanks be to God.
