Preaching series: The Good, The Bad and Ugly!

God- I want my presence to be with you!

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever. Ps. 136:1

The Life of Saul: Standing TALL- falling hard! Hope and Help for the haughty heart!

Saul was a real historical person Saul-likeness is a current, everyday, real, interior struggle for all of us!

Saul took his own sword and fell on it. 1 Sam. 31:4

So all the elders came to Samuel and said, You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, like all the other nations have. 1 Samuel 8: 4-5

The Lord said, Listen to all that the people want, for it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. 1 Samuel 8: 7

Saul: Tall Timid He is and Kish had a son named Saul, as handsome a young man as could be found anywhere in Israel, and he was a head taller than anyone else. 1 Sam. 9: 2

Saul: Tall Timid He is and Saul son of Kish of the tribe of Benjamin was chosen, but when they went looking for him they couldn t find him Then the Lord said, he has hidden himself among the baggage. 1 Sam. 10: 23

Saul: Anointed Powerful He is and Saul gathered the men of Israel which numbered three hundred thousand he separated them into three divisions then, they broke into the camp of the Ammornites, and defeated them before the heat of the day. 1 Sam. 11: 8;11

Saul: Anointed Powerful He is and Saul said, No one shall be put to death today, for this day the LORD has rescued Israel. 1 Sam. 10: 13

Samuel- Be sure to fear the Lord and serve him with all your heart; and remember all the great things he has done for you if you persist in doing evil, you and your king will be swept away. 1 Samuel 12: 23-24

Samuel- Saul was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned over Israel forty-two years. 1 Samuel 13: 1

Saul: He is too busy to, Obey Worship and too big to. Saul waited seven days, the time set by Samuel, but he did not come, so the men began to scatter So Saul began to offer burnt and fellowship offerings. Just then Samuel arrived and said, What have you done? 1 Sam. 10: 13

Saul: Worship He is too busy to, Obey and too big to. I thought, now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal. So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering. You have acted foolishly, Samuel said now your kingdom will not endure; the Lord has sought a man after his own heart. 1 Sam. 13: 12-14

For Saul, God has become a means to an end, a tool to be used, and God will not be used. - E. Peterson

Saul: He is too busy to, Obey Worship and too big to. Then the Lord said, I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came out of Egypt. 1 Sam. 15: 2

Saul: Worship He is too busy to, Obey and too big to. But Samuel replied: Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings as much as obeying the voice of the LORD? TO OBEY IS BETTER THAN SACRIFICE! 1 Sam. 15:55

Signs of a Haughty Heart are: 1. Being too busy to WORSHIP. 2. Being too big to Obey.

Saul was a real historical person Saul-likeness is a current, everyday, real interior struggle for all of us!

God is looking at another King Saul. One just as bad or worse. God is looking at the KING Saul in you! Saul is in your blood stream, in the marrow of your bones. He makes up the very flesh and muscle of your heart. He is mixed into your soul. He inhabits the nuclei of your atoms. Because of sin King Saul is one with you! You are King Saul! Gene Edwards

Saul was a real historical person Saul-likeness is a current, everyday, real interior struggle for all of us!

Brokenness Hope for the Haughty Heart: You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise. Ps. 51: 16-17

Samuel- Be sure to fear the Lord and serve him with all your heart; and remember all the great things he has done for you 1 Samuel 12: 23-24

The fear of the Lord Help for the Haughty Heart: My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. Prov. 2

The Love of God Help for the Haughty Heart: This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. We love him because he first loved us. 1 John 4: 10;16

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever. Ps. 136:1
