FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT FEBRUARY 18, 2018 TODAY'S WORSHIP Divine Service III LSB pages 184-202 L = Liturgist * = Stand C = Congregation PRELUDE WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS OPENING HYMN Stand Up Stand Up for Jesus LSB 660 1. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, Ye soldiers of the cross. Lift high His royal banner; It must not suffer loss. From vict ry unto vict ry His army He shall lead Till ev ry foe is vanquished, And Christ is Lord indeed. 2. Stand up, stand up for Jesus; Stand in His strength alone. The arm of flesh will fail you, Ye dare not trust your own. Put on the Gospel armor; Each piece put on with prayer. Where duty calls or danger, Be never wanting there. 3. Stand up, stand up for Jesus; The strife will not be long; This day the din of battle, The next the victor s song. The soldiers, overcoming, Their crown of life shall see And with the King of Glory Shall reign eternally. *INVOCATION AND GENERAL CONFESSION L: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. L: Merciful heavenly Father, we ask Your forgiveness for the ways we have failed to live up to Your expectations of us. C: For our failure to honor You above all, L: for our preoccupation with our own needs, C: for our lack of concern with the welfare of those who do not know You, L: for our hesitating witness, C: for our half-hearted worship, L: for our begrudging stewardship of Your gifts, C: for our personal failure in being Your representatives, O Lord, L: for all of these we ask for Your forgiveness. C: Bestow on us Your pardon and peace. By Your Spirit, empower us to live lives of love and obedience, through Christ our Lord. Amen. *THE ABSOLUTION *THE GLORIA PATRI LSB, page 186 C: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. *THE KYRIE LSB page 186 C: Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. *THE COLLECT OF THE DAY L: The Lord be with you. C: And with thy spirit.

L: Let us pray to the Lord. THE OLD TESTAMENT READING for the first Sunday in Lent is from Genesis 22:1-2, 9-14, page 16: (5:00, 8:00, 10:30) 1 After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, Abraham! And he said, Here I am. 2 He said, Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you. 9 When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. 11 But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, Abraham, Abraham! And he said, Here I am. 12 He said, Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me. 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called the name of that place, The LORD will provide ; as it is said to this day, On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. THE EPISTLE is from James 1:12-18, page 1011: 12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, I am being tempted by God, for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. L: This is the Word of the Lord. *ALLELUIA AND VERSE C: Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. *THE HOLY GOSPEL - The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the first chapter, verses 9-15, page 836: C: Glory be to Thee, O Lord. 9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven, You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. 12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13 And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him. 14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel. L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to Thee, O Christ. *THE NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic

Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY Approach, My Soul, the Mercy Seat TLH 456 1. Approach, my soul, the mercy seat Where Jesus answers prayer; There humbly fall before His feet, For none can perish there. 2. Bowed down beneath a load of sin, By Satan sorely pressed, By wars without and fears within, I come to Thee for rest. 3. Be Thou my Shield and Hiding-place, That, sheltered near Thy side, I may my fierce Accuser face And tell him Thou hast died. 4. O wondrous Love, to bleed and die, To bear the cross and shame, That guilty sinners such as I Might plead Thy gracious name!
