ST. PATRICK CHURCH Page 3 PORTLAND, MICHIGAN Owning Christ 1 Kings 19:16b, 19-21 Most people save stuff. We are packrats. We save clothes that have not fit for years. We save computer files we may never look at again. When we run out of closets at home, we rent additional space to store things. Once in a while we have a garage sale to thin down our possessions. But we rarely hear of anyone getting rid of everything in order to start over again. When Elisha agreed to follow Elijah as his attendant, he left his livelihood as a farmer. He broke up the yoke he steered for plowing and used it to fuel a fire. He slaughtered his oxen and used the fire to boil their flesh. He served the flesh to his people to eat. Elisha left nothing behind. To be a follower of Christ, we must be prepared to travel light. Our possessions may distract us from keeping Christ as the center of our being. We may also be distracted by too many interests, too many commitments, too much food, or too much play. When Elisha decided to follow Elijah, he broke up, burned up, and cooked up everything he owned. When we decide to follow Christ, we will leave some things behind. It will not feel right at first. It is hard to let go of the things of our past. We are packrats. But the future is glorious if Christ is all we own. Miscellaneous Quotes by Pope Francis The Church s Social Doctrine, with its integral vision of man as a personal and social being, is your compass. There you will find an especially significant fruit of the long journey of the People of God in modern and contemporary history: the defense of religious liberty, of life at every stage, of the right to work and to decent work, of family, of educationf December 7, 2013 Family Perspective By Bud Ozar Today s gospel reminds us once we set our hand to the plow of parenting and marriage, we cannot look back. This is what commitment means: we have said YES to what was, what is and to what can be ALTAR APPOINTMENTS July 2nd & 3rd 4:30 PM Lorie Schrauben Fr. But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather serve one another through love. GALATIANS 5:13 We like to celebrate the fact that we are free to live the good life. But Jesus calls us to a different kind of freedom. St. Paul reminds us that Jesus sets us free so that we can serve one another, share our gifts and promote God s work here on earth to glorify His name and not honor ourselves. Intercessory Prayer That we build God s Church to glorify His name and not look for prestige and honor for ourselves. Our Lord hears our prayers anywhere, but He has revealed to His servants that those who visit Him in the Eucharist will obtain a more abundant measure of grace. St.Alphonsus Ligouri

We encourage anyone in need of any kind of healing to come and be in the healing presence of the Blessed Sacrament, while we pray. If unable to attend, however, we welcome anyone to call with any specific or general healing needs so that we may pray in their behalf. We very much encourage those with healing needs to seek the Sacrament of The Anointing of the Sick as well as prayer before the Eucharist. We also encourage anyone who receives healing of any kind to let it be known in some way so that we can offer praise and thanksgiving to Jesus, the Divine healer, and to help build the faith of our parish family. If you have a devotion to the healing of others, please join us. We meet at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel on the 2nd Thursday of each month. Contact Mike Cook 517-242-1352 or Carol Kahn 517-647-7959. This Ministry is looking for adults willing to share their Catholic faith with the children of our Parish. Last year this Ministry only had 15 volunteers, many more are needed. If there are not enough adult volunteers for next year, this program may have to be cancelled. The more volunteers, the more groups, the less each group will have to do a Sunday session at the 9:30 am Masses. Materials and resources are available with little time of preparation. If you are interested or know of anyone that might be interested in helping the children understand the Gospel message and participate in the Eucharistic celebration at their own level, please contact Lori Thelen in the Faith Formation office at 517-647-6505 Ext. 419 or lorithelen@portlandstpats.com. Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 5 June 26, 2016 Summer Question and Answers Do you have a question about St. Patrick School? For the next few weeks we will use this column space to answer questions that have been asked recently. Q. It was recently announced that next year Mrs. Townsend will be the Preschool 5 grade principal and Mr. Hodge will be the 6 12 grade principal. Can you explain why this change has been made? A. This change was made for two reasons. First, with Mr. Hodge as the Preschool-12 Principal and Mrs. Townsend serving as the Assistant Principal, there has been confusion about who to go to for any given reason. Now, if there is a Preschool through 5th grade question or issue, students, staff, and parents will go to Mrs. Townsend. If the concern is for grades 6 12, they will go to see Mr. Hodge. The second reason is that it takes a huge range of expertise to deal with all of the grades from Preschool thru 12th grade. Now each of the principals will specialize in their own area. Q. I have heard St. Patrick School will be getting 30 Chromebooks for the 2016-17 school year. Where is the money coming from for these devices and how will they be used? Volleyball Tournament Volleyball Tournament, St. Mary Parish, Westphalia, 4th of July: Outdoor on grass, 4 on 4 coed. Ages high school and above. $80 per team. 8am start. Competitive & Recreational divisions. Register by July 2nd by contacting Neil Feldpausch at neilfeldpausch@hotmail.com or 989-640-4375. A. Very little if any money is coming from the school budget. We were blessed to have received $3,450 in grant money from ADM Alliance and Nutrition and another $2,500 in grant money from Tri-County Homeworks Electric Cooperative. We also received another $500 donation from another donor. We are currently looking at using these devices to pilot a 1:1 Chromebook program with the Class of 2020. We have done extensive research with other schools that have a 1:1 program. But, before we make a large investment in hardware, we do our own pilot program to monitor their use. We ll also be asking for feedback from the students before moving forward with full implementation of a 1:1 program. Q. We are not Catholic. Can my child still attend St. Patrick School? A. St. Patrick School is open to all. One does not need to be a Catholic to send their child to St. Patrick School. About 3% of our students belong to other Christian denominations. One does not even need to be Christian to attend school at St. Patrick School. Q. How many students attend St. Patrick School? A. Our current enrollment for the 2016-17 school year is as follows: high school: 98 students, middle school: 75 students and elementary school: 164 students. This is a total DK 12th grade enrollment of 337 students. We will continue these Q and A columns throughout the summer in an effort to answer any questions our community may have about St. Patrick School. If you have a question that you would like answered, please email it to randyhodge@portlandstpats.com. Over the past few months, members of our Finance Council have been talking to many of the groups in the parish about a new offertory program that will be introduced in the fall. While the program in its entirety will be presented in September, parishioners at the group meetings have been asking some very good questions. So, in an effort to educate everyone in the parish, those questions will be answered here, in the bulletin, over the next few weeks. They'll also be posted on our parish website. Q. Why do we need a new offertory program? A. Right now, our offertory fluctuates as much as 40% from month-to-month, which means that we never know for sure how much money we'll have available to run our parish and all of the programs that we offer. Our budgets are based on past history and our best guesses. We want to be able to base them on more realistic data. Faithful Giving, when fully implemented, will do that for us. If you have questions about this new program, please drop them in the Suggestion Box in the vestibule of the church, drop them in the collection basket, or email them to mikejohnson@portlandstpats.com.
