Reflections: Welcome On Sunday, June 24th, I arrived in the parking lot for my very first YNIA trip. I was nervous about taking 18 teens to Green Bay, nervous about driving a 15 passenger van and nervous about our work sites. That morning was the start of an amazing week. The teens we took with us are everything we can ever hope for in the next generation. They are hard workers. They care about their fellow man. They have questions about their faith and how to go deeper. We left that day, arrived in Milwaukee, drove two hours to Green Bay and Monday arrived at our three different work sites. One site was the NEW (North Eastern Wisconsin) Community Homeless Shelter. There our teens and chaperones planted flowers and vegetables. They weeded gardens and trimmed hedges. They cleaned apartments top to bottom. There they met two special people who impacted all in that group, Otis and Rory. Every night as they came back they told us more about Otis and Rory s stories about their life before homelessness, then during and after homelessness. Otis and Rory s stories are vastly different as to how they became homeless but similar that their time at NEW Community helped them start to deal with their traumas and put their life back together. This time meant so much to them that they continue to volunteer there and help those in similar predicaments. Another team spent the week at one of the largest St. Vincent de Paul s in the country. They spent the week pricing and hanging clothes, cleaning out large storage rooms full of old electronics and picking trash up off the parking lot. They had some contact with customers shopping there. These were people of lower economic status doing their best to provide clothes for their family and make their living quarters a little homier. Those that served there were so impacted by how simply hanging clothes or picking up trash can help people they are planning to volunteer monthly together at the Salvation Army. My group was at House of Hope. This is a homeless shelter for moms 18-24 years old. The very first thing our group realized was just how young these moms are and how very different their lives are compared to our teens. These young women have mostly grown up in cycles of abuse and homelessness. They have little to no experience in caring for themselves or their children. While there we cleaned and organized their basement, cleaned light fixtures and changed light bulbs, spent time with Pine Sol cleaning the stairs and hallways, sanitized toys and playing with the children. On the last day we hosted a carnival for the children. Our host, Laurie, explained that this carnival was just as much for the children as for the moms. The moms watched our teens playing, laughing and interacting positively with the children. Some of these moms have no experience with fun like this. One Mom hoped her life would be stable enough she would be able to have dreams. Some moms wished for a job to support their child another Mom wished she could make enough money to go visit her own mother. One thing that stayed with us was a bulletin board in the hallway that stated the mom s hopes and dreams. These teens are special people. They had each other s back the entire trip. They worked as a unit. One of my most special memories was our visit to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Hope. This is the only confirmed apparition of Mary in the United States. We walked into the chapel on the site of the apparition. I went to light a candle as I turned back I watched our teens one by one come forward now before the altar and kneel in one long row and pray. It touched my heart to witness this. No one had told them to do this. Our teens were so impacted by the work they did in Green Bay they have asked to bring that effort back to St. Patrick s. They have worked with Father Tomasz to come up with a plan. They are going to host car washes. The money raised from the car washes will pay for the paint for the Parish Center. They will then paint the center and paint murals in the Pre School and Kindergarten rooms in an effort of helping their parish. Please pray for them as they undertake this endeavor. Please also pray for Deacon Chris and I and the seven teens we are taking this weekend to the Steubenville youth conference at UMass Lowell. We are part of a group from the diocese and will be part of the 3,000 teens from New England gathering in worship. Aileen

It you are interested in "making a difference - being the face of Jesus" prayerfully consider joining the "Greeter Ministry". Please contact Fred Beauregard - fbmbcbjb@charter.net. A letter from, Janet B, a Greeter at the 4:30 PM Mass I have been involved with the greeter Ministry for over two years. It has been a most rewarding experience for me. Although I have been a member of St. Patrick s Church for almost forty years I can truly say that while I recognize many faces, I didn t always know who many parishioners were. I now can say hello and speak that person s name. I can truly say it has been such a blessing to get to know my fellow parishioners on a much more personal level. I would encourage anyone who is thinking about this ministry to give it a try. You will not be disappointed. NAC Food Pantry Open Tues.10:00 AM - Noon & Thurs. 1-3 PM (508-234-4599) Please remember those that are less fortunate. The NAC Food Pantry helps local area families, and will accept any nonperishable food in date. If you would like to donate please drop items off in the boxes at the entrance of the Church or drop a donation in the basket marked for the NAC Food Pantry. ON THE ENVIRONMENT: Recycling Carbon Dioxide In Laudato Si, Pope Francis affirmed the scientific consensus that climate change is occurring and is primarily the result of human activity. He called upon the global community to together take action to avert the harshest aspects of a warming planet that impact poor and marginalized communities often first and most severely. An example of TAKING ACTION, quotes from the Boston Globe: Researchers say they have developed a cost-efficient way to extract carbon dioxide from air and make fuel from it or cars, trucks, or airplanes. The carbon dioxide would essentially be recycled back into the fuels that generate it. Researchers published their results in the journal Joule. Their findings were based on three years of research at a pilot plant in British Columbia where the carbon dioxide has been captured and barrels of fuel have been made. "We're ready to build a much larger plant," said David Keith, a professor of applied physics and public policy at Harvard University and founder and chief scientist of Carbon Engineering, a Canadian firm that has been developing the technology. The fuel could be produced at a cost that would not raise the prices to consumers. The company envisions building large-scale plants near wind and solar facilities, which would provide clean energy to enable the carbon dioxide capture process, This would result in carbon-neutral fuel for transportation. He also said it wasn't enough to just make transportation carbonneutral. Carbon dioxide levels peaked again at record highs in May. the amount of carbon dioxide has increased nearly 26% in the last 50 years, the Associated Press reported. (Boston Globe- June 14)
