Children playing on the Early Childhood Center playground. 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time August 7, 2016

My Dear Parishioners, As the time gets closer for our children to return to school and for our young parishioners to leave for college, I want to wish them well as they continue to grow in wisdom. To all our parents, be assured of the love and prayers of this parish as your vocation continues to unfold. It will also change, especially for those of you whose daughters and sons are leaving home for the first time. I heard recently how the food bank at Christian Community Service Center, CCSC has become depleted due the increasing needs of the families that attend, especially during the summer when many of those with children will not be receiving school lunches. It was made known to me by Joe Cano, a parishioner who takes the food that many of you leave weekly in the basket by the tabernacle to the center, that their biggest need at this time is for BEANS. As a community of faith and sharing, I want to make next Sunday, August 14, a special Sunday when we collect food for CCSC, to focus especially on BEANS. Please bring what you are able to church next Sunday to the Food Collecting Basket. We also support those in need that receive care from Casa Juan Diego, a Catholic Workers house run by Louise and Mark Zwick. This couple and their family have labored tirelessly for many years on behalf of some of the poorest in our city. Next week I will inform you of some of the needs of Casa Juan Diego, and I am planning to dedicate a designated Sunday to collect for them as well. Please consider participating in the evening discussion on the evening of Monday August 15, in the Fellowship Hall, beginning with food at 6 pm. It will be an opportunity to hear from Deacon Larry and me about what response might be appropriate by Christians to the pressing questions of the time in light of recent shootings, both of police and by them. Sgt Keith Seafus of the Houston Police Department will be sharing his perspective with us as a police officer and a father. James Campbell, who works for the Media Department of the Memorial Health System, will be present. James penned an article some years ago under the title Driving While Black. We will also be joined by Dena Marks of the Anti-Defamation League. The Christian vocation we share is to transform our culture, not by legislation, but by our words and actions one person at a time. Join us to learn how each of us can contribute to making Houston a more loving and just and less fearful and violent city. The evening is an opportunity to perhaps see a situation a little more clearly and from the perspective of others who might be different from ourselves. As it will be August 15 when we meet, the Feast of the Assumption (not a holy day of obligation this year), we will invoke the prayers of the Mother who saw her own Son die and ask her prayers as Mary, Queen of Peace. With every good wish and blessing, Fr. Phil

Scan this QR code with your smartphone for easy online giving! Panel Discussion Please join us on August 15, for a joint effort organized in close cooperation with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). Fr. Phil, Deacon Larry, Dena Marks (from ADL), journalist James Campbell, Sgt. Keith Seafus of the Houston Police Department, and others will participate in meaningful discussion on the topics of our day. August 15, 2016 6 pm Fellowship Hall Refreshments will be served CCSC Sunday August 14 Christian Community Service Center (CCSC) is in great need. Their food supply has been consumed due to the increased family needs during the summer months. On Sunday, August 14, please bring non-perishable food items, with a special focus on BEANS, with you to Mass, and place them in the basket next to the tabernacle.

Our Condolences Dewey Leonard Coles, Jr., father of Dwight Coles, and Wilfred Navarro, Jr., a long-time parishioner, have died. Please keep Dewey and Wilfred and their families in your prayers. Eternal rest, grant unto them, O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen. Casa Juan Diego Casa Juan Diego was founded following the model of the Catholic Worker Movement of Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin, to serve immigrants, refugees and the poor. This model implements the principles of the Gospel and Catholic social teachings. To this end, Casa Juan Diego created their own houses of hospitality to serve the poor and homeless, providing shelter, food, clothing and medical services. In this Year of Mercy, what better way to serve than to volunteer at Casa Juan Diego! Volunteer opportunities include: Help distribute food once a week, early Tuesday mornings from 6:00am to 9:00am Assist in the garden Be a truck driver for a few hours a week Volunteer doctor and/or dentist services needed in the medical clinic Truly I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to Me. Matthew 25. Funding for Casa Juan Diego is through voluntary contributions. Our altar flowers this weekend were donated by Joyce Bilski in thanksgiving for God s countless blessings.

Faith Formation Faith Formation begins September 11! Faith Formation is for children in 4 years through high school who attend public school. Online registration is now open, please visit sttheresa.cc/faith-formation Registration in person will take place each Sunday in August. For more information, please contact Adrian Leal at youthministry@sttheresa.cc. Homebound Ministry I have been a Eucharistic minister to the homebound of St. Theresa's Parish for four years. One weekend a month, after Mass, I have the pleasure to bring Communion to the homebound parishioners at St. Theresa s. Many have been members here for over 50 years. We pray, we acknowledge our sins, we share the Gospel, and they receive the Eucharist. The Parishioners and myself will often visit, sharing news of our families and children, and discussing the goings-on at St. Theresa s, keeping them up to date with the Parish they still feel so close to. With some parishioners, I merely listen, and with others, few words are ever exchanged. Regardless, the moments are special, and I leave their homes with a humble spirit and a more intimate relationship with Christ If you are interested in this ministry, the other homebound ministers and myself are in need of a few more helping hands to volunteer to bring Communion to the parishioners of St. Theresa s that cannot join us at Mass each week. The commitment is typically one weekend per month for an hour or two. Please call the church office or email me at kelly.glandingwoelfel@gmail.com for more information. We would love to have you join us in this important ministry! If you would like to submit an announcement for our bulletin, please send it to: bulletin@sttheresa.cc.
