18th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 31, 2016
Our readings today speak of our concerns anxieties and fears possessions and greed, our clinging to our old selves when we are called to be made new in Christ. In these last two weeks of political conventions we have heard hopes and dreams alongside anxieties and fears. It is clear that neither left, right, nor middle have easy answers for the challenges of our day. For too many, we give up go home and talk amongst ourselves. We buy into the worldview of the 17th century philosopher, Thomas Hobbes, who said that life is a war of each against all that self-preservation is the value by which we should guide our lives. But we are called by the Gospel to a new vision of our common childhood before God. We are called to be builders of a civilization of love, in the wording of St. John Paul II. All members of St. Theresa are invited to an evening of dialog, sharing, and reflection on August 15, in the Fellowship Hall. This will be a time of pondering the challenges of our differences as men and women living in a world of multiple identities. Imagine Jesus teaching us to live by love with our hearts focused on the things of God, not fear. Imagine the challenge of the Colossians wrestling with the words from today s second reading: Hear there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all and in all. Imagine hearing that there are no insiders and outsiders by race, economic standing, education level, type of work, citizenship or immigration status but Christ is all in all. This is hard work and is by no means easy to take in. So much of our life, we are taught that the truth is an either/or. In our faith, we learn that the truth is often both/and. If you struggle with how to accept the differences between us, join us for this night of discussion, questions, and dialog. More information will follow in the weeks to come. In the meantime, hold Monday evening, August 15, at 6 pm. Blessings and best, Deacon Larry The program on August 15, is a joint effort organized in close cooperation with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). Please join Fr. Phil, Deacon Larry, Dena Marks (from ADL), journalist James Campbell, Sgt. Keith Seafus of the Houston Police Department, and others for meaningful discussion on the topics of our day. August 15, 2016 6 pm Fellowship Hall Refreshments will be served

FRESH FLOWERS NEEDED We invite the parishioners of St. Theresa Catholic Church to sponsor altar flowers by choosing a weekend that has special meaning to you. Oftentimes, more than one person finds a certain date important, so flowers may be given in more than one name on any given weekend. Celebrate a variety of moments: In memory of a loved one, In celebration of a wedding anniversary, birthday, baptism or other special event In honor of someone special. Our goal is to have a bulletin listing each week celebrating an event in the lives of our parish families (except during Lent). A suggested contribution of $35 per arrangement will help support the weekly cost of altar flowers. Our normal arrangement options are two pedestal arrangements behind the altar, one arrangement in front of the altar, and/or one arrangement in front of the lectern. Please turn in this order form and contribution at least two weekends prior to the weekend you would like the floral arrangement displayed.
