De a r Pa r i s h i o n e r s o f St. An t h o n y o f Pa d u a Ch u r c h & Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Missionary Co-Operative Appeal at Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church We welcome the Very Reverend Father John Kwadwo Agyekum today at Annunciation of the BVM Church. He is the Vicar General of the Catholic Diocese of Obuasi, Ghana. He was ordained in July 1998. Currently he is the Vicar General of the Diocese of Obuasi, pastor of Holy Cross Parish in Nsema-Kumasi, and servers also as the Vocation Director of the Diocese of Obuasi. He joins us this weekend to do a Mission Appeal for his home Diocese of Obuasi. Created in 1995, the Diocese of Obuasi is located in the rural area of Ashanti Region in Ghana. The Diocese of Obuasi faces a lot of challenges in its evangelization and social ministries. The financial support given in the second collection today at Annunciation will assist the Diocese of Obuasi in a very special way in providing education for children in the rural areas especially the girl-child; formation of seminarians, catechists, youth and women leaders; infrastructure for schools and village churches; provision of good drinking water by drilling boreholes [This will help to curtail water borne diseases like cholera, river blindness, guinea worms and buruli ulcer]; and provision of health care facilities. I thank everyone for your good assistance both financially and spiritually to the Diocese of Obuasi. I pray God richly bless you for your good work! Catholic Radio of Acadiana.com I encourage parishioners to tune into Catholic Radio on 90.5 FM and 1230 AM and Digital TV Channel 50.5. Their website gives the following explanation of the Apostolic Mission for Catholic Radio of Acadiana: Catholic Radio for Acadiana, as a member of the Christ Our King Radio Network, endeavors to answer Christ s call to evangelize. We will do this through the mediums of radio through 90.5 FM Kaplan and 1230 AM Opelousas, internet through online streaming at catholicradioforacadiana.com, Digital TV Channel 50.5, and free Android and Apple Apps through your App Store. We broadcast as an affiliate of the EWTN Global Catholic Radio Network and provide local programming featuring Religious and laity within the Diocese of Lafayette. Additionally, we provide services to our Bishop, churches, Catholic Schools, and other 501(C)(3) nonprofit humanitarian organizations by providing broadcast and visual announcements at no cost. I have many times listened to Catholic Radio while driving. I heard Mother Angelica give good advice. I was taken by surprise, listening to Mother talk on the radio knowing that she is in heaven. I also heard Father Larry Richards give good advice to people. It is a good break in the routine. It provides spiritual enrichment and inspiration. Both Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Parish and St. Anthony of Padua are member parishes. Gospel for the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Cycle C Luke 12:13-21 Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one s life does not consist of possessions. This is not a message that gets much advertising. On the contrary, just about every advertised message we hear comes from someone who wants to make money by selling us possessions. In today s culture, it is hard to remember that life is not about possessions. In today s Gospel, Jesus reminds us that there is more to life. Unlike the fool who spends all of his time, energy, and money building larger barns, we should focus our resources on becoming rich in what matters to God. This means cultivating virtue instead of vice. It means sharing our money with those in need instead of hoarding it out of selfish greed. The call is a challenging one, and countercultural as well. Jesus never said that the Christian way was the way of the world. Instead of falling for the marketers messages, may we have the wisdom to store up our treasure in heaven. Questions of the Week Luke 12: 13-21: How does the parable of the rich fool speak to you personally? Ecclesiastes 1:2; 2:21-23: What role does vanity play in your life? Colossians 3:1-5, 9-11: How do Paul s words ( seek what is above ) challenge you? Rev. Msgr. J. Robert
