The British Province of Carmelites Liturgical Ordo 2012 1312 2012: 7 th Centenary of the Carmelite Ordinal of Sibert de Beka

GENERAL NOTES The liturgical Ordo here presented is that recommended for the friar, lay Carmelite and other communities of the British Carmelite Province serving England, Scotland and Wales. The following points should be noted: 1. For this Liturgical Year until Advent 2012 Sunday and Festive Lectionary: Weekday Lectionary: Cycle B Cycle II 2. Abbreviations DO Divine Office 3 volumes CS Carmelite Supplement (1987) NCS New Carmelite Supplement (1993) EP1 Evening Prayer 1 (First Vespers) Mem Memorial 3. The DO page references are for the offices of Morning and Evening Prayer in the three-volume Divine Office Breviary printed by Collins. The numbers in brackets refer to the book of Morning and Evening Prayer printed by Collins. Page numbers to the Carmelite Supplements (also known as The Carmelite Proper of the Liturgy of the Hours) are those printed by the Institutum Carmelitanum (currently awaiting reprint). 4. On Ferias (ordinary days) and most Memorias, use the Psalter for the prescribed week in conjunction with the reference in the Divine Office or Morning and Evening Prayer book. For Feasts and Solemnities follow the indications given in the proper (the part towards the end of the books where the feast days are arranged by date). ALWAYS TAKE NOTE OF THESE REFERENCES FIRST. 5. At Midday Prayer on Solemnities, the Antiphons and Psalms are as noted in the Proper: on Feasts the Hymn, Antiphons and Psalms are normally from the weekday Psalter, unless otherwise noted: the rest is from the Proper or Common. On Ferias and Memorias the whole of Midday Prayer, including the Prayer, is taken from the Feria, unless otherwise noted. 1

6. The Anniversaries given are those of deceased friar members of the Province, of the Blackburn Nuns, and of the founders and leaders of The Leaven Secular Institute, together with others, including some Tertiaries, who have made a significant contribution to the life of the Carmelite Family in Britain. Local Lay Carmelite communities may wish to include the anniversaries of deceased members in their prayer. When a Carmelite dies it is usual for the Office of the Dead (found at the back of the books) to be prayed for him/her. 7. On Ferias in Advent & Lent, Memorias are celebrated as follows, if desired: at Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer, after the prayer, the conclusion is omitted and the Antiphon & Prayer of the Saint is said with its conclusion. 8. Italics indicate Carmelite Feasts and Anniversaries. 9. Celebrations which are particular to a specific diocese are not included in this Ordo but normally will be found in the local diocesan directory or yearbook. Feasts of the National Calendars of England, Wales and Scotland are included where appropriate. 10. Where no other celebration takes precedence, it is the custom of the Carmelite Order (cf. 1995 Constitutions 87) to commemorate Saturdays in honour of Our Lady. For the Office the Common of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Memoria of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Saturday are printed in the various editions of the Office books. Please notice that the Solemnities of the Lord (such as the Epiphany, the Ascension and Corpus Christi) have been transferred to the appropriate Sunday, as per the decision of the Catholic Bishops Conference of England & Wales. These are shown in the Ordo, and Carmelites in Scotland may need to check the local liturgical calendar for such dates. Days of Prayer appointed by the Catholic Bishops Conference of England & Wales have been included, as have the Days of Prayer and Action designated by the Carmelite NGO on 5 th June (World Environment Day) and 10 th December (World Human Rights Day). In keeping with the request of Blessed Pope John Paul II, and in solidarity with our enclosed sisters in Carmel, 21 st November is marked as Pro Orantibus Day (a Day of Prayer for Those who Pray). Further information regarding the liturgical calendar can be found on the website of The Liturgy Office of the Catholic Bishops Conference of England & Wales: www.liturgyoffice.org.uk 2

Particular notices for 2012 The Catholic Bishops in Britain have requested that on the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, Sunday 3 rd June 2012, parishes and communities celebrate a Mass with prayers to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. During this Mass, the first reading is replaced by 1 Kings 3:11-14, and the Prayer for the Queen, approved by the Bishops (available on The Liturgy Office website: www.liturgyoffice.org.uk) is used after the Post- Communion Prayer and before the Final Blessing. In this printing of the Carmelite Ordo national feasts have been revised following the calendar published in the new translation of the Roman Missal. Carmelite additions and revisions The following information has been provided by the Postulator General: The feast day of St. Nuno Alvares Pereira is on 1 st April, but in order to avoid the date regularly falling in Lent the General Council of the Order is considering whether to petition the Congregation for the Sacraments and Worship to translate the celebration to 6 th November (when it is already celebrated in Portugal), and raise the rank from a Memorial to a Feast. In 2012 the current feast on 1 st April is precluded by Palm Sunday. If the feast of St. Nuno is to move to 6 th November then the General Council will probably petition that the feast of Bl. Angel Prat i Hostench and Companions (the Carmelite Martyrs of Catalonia) be transferred to a new date when these Spanish martyrs can be commemorated, probably on the same date as the Carmelite Martyrs of Córdoba and of Castile/Madrid whose beatification will hopefully take place in 2012. A book giving biographies of the Carmelite Saints and Blesseds, along with a commentary on the texts of their Offices, has been published by Fr. Emanuele Boaga, O.Carm., Celebrating the Saints of Carmel, (Rome: Edizioni Carmelitane, 2010). Information on the Carmelite Saints and Blesseds can be found on the website of the British Province of Carmelites: www.carmelite.org Note from the Editor Further copies of this Ordo can be obtained from Saint Albert s Press. It is also available as a PDF file on the Province website: www.carmelite.org/prayer I would like to express my sincere thanks to Br. Gerard Walsh, O.Carm., for his kind assistance in compiling this year s Ordo. Johan Bergström-Allen, T.O.C. Carmelite Projects & Publications Office, York www.carmelite.org/projects 3

1312-2012: The 7 th Centenary of The Carmelite Ordinal of Sibert de Beka 2012 marks 700 years since the publication of an immensely important document in the development of Carmelite liturgy and identity, the Ordinal compiled by friar Sibert de Beka (Sibert of Beek), Prior Provincial of Lower Germany (d. 1332). It was in Britain, at a General Chapter held in London in 1312, that Sibert s Ordinal was promulgated for use throughout the Order. Like this Ordo, the Ordinal set out the calendar of prayer for Carmelites to follow. Before 1312 the Carmelites pattern of worship followed the Rite of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Sibert took this Rite as the basis for developing a distinct Carmelite Rite. Sibert included the celebration of various early saints and events associated with the life of Christ, including the feasts of St. Anne and the Conception of Mary, as well as Palestinian saints of the Holy Land. In an age before mass communications, the Carmelite Ordinal compiled by Sibert was one of the most important resources the Order possessed for spreading ideas and forming its members. It gave the Order which had no literal founder a sense of common identity, binding together communities across Europe by giving them a shared pattern of prayer. Britain is home to some manuscripts that are among the most useful and beautiful examples of the Carmelite Rite. Scholars conclude that a manuscript now in Lambeth Palace Library (Ms. 193) is probably the best witness to Sibert s original design, and the Carmelite Rite is beautifully illustrated in the famous Reconstructed Carmelite Missal in the British Library (Mss. Additional 29704-5), described recently as among the great Mass books made in England, sometime between about 1385 and 1405. Carmelites at the dedication of a church, depicted in the Reconstructed Carmelite Missal, British Library Ms. Additional 29704-5, folio 68v detail. 4

Following the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s, the Carmelite Order throughout the world embraced the renewal of the Liturgy across the Church, ceasing its own Rite in favour of adopting local Rites (Roman, Syro-Malabar, Ambrosian, etc.). Whilst the new Liturgy has proved tremendously fruitful, the Order has begun some initiatives to revisit and perhaps revive some distinctive and beautiful aspects of the Carmelite Rite devised by Sibert de Beka. In this anniversary year of Sibert de Beka s Carmelite Ordinal, we give thanks for the Order s rich liturgical heritage, which continues to develop, reflecting and shaping our identity as a Carmelite Family. The Carmelite Calendar Carmelite Solemnities, Feasts and Memorias are listed in the Ordo (except when higher ranking observances preclude them this year). It is not the tradition in the communities of the British Province to observe Optional Memorias (except for that of St. Simon Stock because it is observed here as a Feast) and for this reason they are not included in the listing in this Ordo. They are, however, memorials which are proper to the Carmelite Order, so for those who wish to commemorate them they are included in brackets within the calendar when other celebrations do not preclude them. Memorials observed by the Discalced Carmelite Order (O.C.D.) but not by the Carmelite Order (O.Carm.) are not listed below, but can be found in the various printings of the Carmelite Supplement to the Breviary.
