The doctrinal statements used in our evaluations are our Articles of Religious Belief and the Baptist Faith and Message Statement. Spiritual Vitality We are a worshiping community, with both personal spirituality and gathering together as a Seminary for the praise and adoration of God and instruction in His Word. Mission Focus We are not here merely to get an education or to give one. We are here to change the world by fulfilling the Great Commission and the Great Commandments through the local church and its ministries. Annually, the President will designate a core value that will become the focus of pedagogy for the year. For the 2014-2015 academic year that Core Value is Spiritual Vitality. Course Description This doctoral seminar is built around selected conferences, teaching church events, and/or meetings that emphasize the disciple-making mission of the church. The purpose of this seminar is to expose the students to selected contemporary models of or practices of disciple-making in the local church. Special attention will be given to disciple-making in home groups, marketplace groups, and mid-sized groups. CESE8306 Page 1

Special Seminar Considerations Conference Fee: In addition to tuition, course requires a registration fee for the Exponential conference. Register at www.exponential.org. Be sure to select the Discipleship Track and select the student rate for a discount. Housing and Meals: All travel, food and room costs are the responsibility of the student. Initial Class Meeting: On Monday, April 27, all students must meet with Dr. Watkins in Welcome Center 1 on the Idlewild campus at 5:30 PM. Blackboard Enrollment: Please enroll yourself in our class on Blackboard. Communication will be primarily through emails and Blackboard. Assignments will be posted and collected on Blackboard. Course Objectives In order to serve churches effectively through Christian Education, the student, by the end of the course, should: 1. attend conferences, take appropriate notes, and assess the implications of presentations to a variety of areas of the disciple-making ministry. 2. evaluate the key issues raised through presentations concerning the deeper elements of philosophy and principles of the disciple-making ministry. 3. participate in seminar meetings, discussing current trends and classic methodologies in light of conference presentations. 4. identify and create a strategy to appropriately contextualize transferable components of presentations into the ministry setting of the student. Assignments and Evaluation Criteria Pre-Seminar Requirements Please consult the www.exponential.org website for conference registration information. The student will read the 4 required textbooks and prepare a four-page Critical Review (double-spaced, typewritten, and in Turabian form) for each. The reviews should include the following: (1)bibliographic data; (2)a statement of the author s purpose; (3)a brief synopsis of the message of each section or chapter; (4)a critical analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of each section or chapter; (5)an evaluative assessment of the degree of success the author had in achieving the purpose, and (6)a discussion of potential application to the student s ministry context. Due: April 24, 2015. Seminar Requirements Attend all scheduled program events as well as all seminar sessions related to disciple-making. Take thorough notes on all sessions attended in order to be able to type and organize them for future use. Post-Seminar Requirements Interview one of the discipleship speakers at Exponential. (If possible, request time with them prior to the event.) Discover the history of their disciple-making journey and the strategy they currently pursue. Investigate how they are responding to the cultural changes in the American church field, especially related to making disciples. Submit a 3-4 page synopsis of your findings including at least on page of reaction and response to the interview. Due: May 8, 2015. The student will prepare an Annotated Bibliography based upon the theme for the conference theme Igniting a Culture of Multiplication. This bibliography will include at least ten (10) books and resources that the student believes inform the issues that were raised in the conference. While it is not anticipated that students will read completely each work, a five to six sentence summary/analysis/critique should accompany each entry. Due: May 15, 2015. Prepare and submit a 6 to 8 page Reflection Paper (double-spaced, typewritten, and in Turabian form) comparing and contrasting the issues raised in the conference. Reflect on how those issues would have implications for your current ministry setting. Include at least two key ideas or strategies that you will initiate in your ministry context. Include any necessary proper citations and a bibliography. Due: May 22, 2015. Notes: Basic Turabian style should be used when preparing any work for this seminar. The book review and papers are to be typed. Grammar will be considered in the grading of papers. Papers will be graded based on 70% content and 15% form and 15% spelling and grammar. All assignments are expected to be submitted on time. Late assignments will incur a late penalty for the grade. CESE8306 Page 3

Course Policies The following policies will serve to govern both the student and professor for the duration of this course: Assignment Submission All assignments are to be submitted on the due date. Late assignments will incur a 10-percent penalty per day. Assignment Format All assignments are to be typed, double-spaced with 12-point font and 1-inch margins unless otherwise indicated. Assignment pages should be stapled together with a Turabian format cover page that includes name, date of submission and assignment title. A Turabian style guide is available in the NOBTS library and is on the NOBTS Orlando Extension website. Absences Due to the delivery format of the course, absences will not be permitted. Academic Honesty Policy All graduate and undergraduate NOBTS students, whether on-campus, internet, or extension center students, are expected to adhere to the highest Christian standard of honesty and integrity when completing academic assignments for all courses in every delivery system format. The Bible provides our standard for academic integrity and honesty. This standard applies whether a student is taking tests, quizzes, exams, writing papers, completing Discussion Boards, or any other course requirement.
