Our Lady of Lourdes Page 3 Dear Friends: Welcome to Bishop Christopher Cardone, who I explained last week, is here at Our Lady of Lourdes to preach about the vital work of the Missions. Please give him your support and consideration. This weekend also is the time when Archbishop Oscar Romero of Salvador will be Beatified by Pope Francis. Ordained in 1942, Archbishop Romero was consecrated a bishop in 1970. He took over the Archdiocese of San Salvador in 1977, and was assassinated March 24th, 1980. He was celebrating Mass at the time of his death. Archbishop Romero is celebrated for his deep and courageous alignment of the Church to the poor. In a time when 'Death Squads' were known to eliminate those who stood against governmental oppression, he was willing to risk his life so that the needful might have a voice. Please keep him and his witness in your prayers. In an age when standing with Christ can still get you martyred in many parts of the world, Archbishop Oscar Romero is a shining example of Christ-like valor and dedication to God's people. During this weekend, I will also be speaking at many Masses about the upcoming Our Lady of Lourdes Growth and Development Fund Campaign. In this, our 60th year as a parish, and as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the building of the Church, we will kick off a campaign to renew the parish, both physically and spiritually. The financial goal is to raise one million dollars. The physical repairs are necessary and I'll outline them in my remarks. The spiritual renewal will focus on new efforts to bring more young families and their children back to Church. For such a campaign to be a success, it will require sacrificial giving by all of us who treasure Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. Each family in the parish will be asked to consider making a pledge to the campaign, which can be paid over a three year period. Each registered parishioner will also be invited to attend a reception here at the parish where many of the details of the campaign will be outlined. I hope you will consider attending. As always, I do not ask you to do what I won't try to do myself. So I've been assessing what I can give financially over the next three years to see that our parish can be renewed and continue to grow with a vibrant faith. Please join me in this effort. With gratitude for your goodness, I am In His Love, Msgr. Jim Lisante Pastor

Since our group began in November 2009, the completed blanket count stands at 1,449 I m sure in no time at all we will be adding to this amazing number. Thank you to our lovely group of ladies for all the good work you do to bring love and comfort to many children undergoing cancer care. Our parish is richly blessed to have gathered a wonderful group of volunteers who make up Our Lady of Lourdes Ministry of Consolation team. The most valuable gifts we can give are the gifts that come from the heart. The precious gifts of our time, love and compassion are especially needed during the time of the loss of a loved one. Created to provide warmth, caring and personal attention to assist families in preparation for the funeral mass, this particular ministry can never have too many helping hands. Whether your interest be that of a Greeter, Lector or EM, please give some thought as to sharing your time and talents and being a part of this ministry s call to love and care for one another. Thank you so much to our coordinator, Deacon Frank Gariboldi and all our volunteers for embracing this beautiful ministry. Please call Parish Outreach at 516-541-1260 if you would like to volunteer. Thank you for your consideration. Paper Goods Thank you to everyone who helped Outreach with donations of various paper products during the month of April. The good folks we serve at our Food Pantry are most grateful to receive these additional items of paper towels, toilet paper, napkins and tissues. As paper goods are costly, your generosity is greatly appreciated! We will be delighted to accept assistance with paper goods any time of year! Thank you for all you do in kindness for others!

Page 12 Sunday May 24, 2015 The "Ideological Colonization" of Africa Bishop Emmanuel Badejo of Nigeria is the new Chairman of Communications for the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar. He has traveled extensively on the continent. Steven Mosher, President of Population Research Institute (PRI), stated in the March/April 2015 PRI Review that Bishop Badejo has "seen firsthand how the [United States] over the last six years has relentlessly pushed abortion, contraception, sterilization and homosexuality on Nigeria and other African countries." According to Badejo, things have gotten so bad that the United States "has refused to help combat the Islamic terror group Boko Haram unless...nigeria legalizes abortion, promotes homosexuality, and agrees to hand out free birth control pills to teenage girls." In a recent interview with Aleteia, the bishop "made it clear that the West's refusal to help Nigeria combat Islamic terrorism has to do with Nigeria's pro-life and pro-family laws." The bishop stated, "I take it all back to the agenda of population control. There has been an inordinate alarm about the exploding population in Africa. And anything that can be done to decrease or limit the growth of the population of Africa is quite welcome...the United States actually said it would help Nigeria with Boko Haram only if we modify our laws concerning homosexuality, family planning, and birth control. It is very clear that cultural imperialism exists. In fact, I think that Africa is suffering greatly from a cultural imperialism that threatens to erode our cultural values." The bishop continued, "Western civilization today is sick. There is a diminishing sense of the respect for the sanctity of life. And all of this is to be imposed on Africa, at whatever the cost. We think that it is immoral and that it is unjust. [The West] is pushing a culture of death. Contraception, abortion and all such things that limit the existence of people is abhorrent to the African, and the average African on the streets resists that. The Western world claims that every kind of right is a human right, and that every behavior must have the status of a human right. We say no. Not every human behavior has the status of a human right. The African believes this because he always starts from the higher being. God is always there and has a place in the life of an African. Africa rejects an individualistic, selfish culture that thinks only about the quality of life rather than the sanctity of life. And Africa rejects the kind of culture that speaks only about freedom and no responsibility. We reject that kind of Western-style sexual education that is prevalent now, that attacks children, that seeks to 'free' them and give them 'choices' in their own sexual behaviors. There are United Nations organizations that have sworn to help children be free from parental influence and religious organizations. Children as young as five or six. Why do children or even youth need to know about family planning. They don't have families. What are they planning?" Mosher reports that Bishop Badejo has been invited to visit the U. S. Capitol and meet with members of the House and Senate. Mosher concludes, "This assault on the culture, the faith, and the very lives of Catholic Africans must cease." ******************************************************* LifeSiteNews.com, 4/29/15, by Hilary White: "At his weekly general audience today, Pope Francis again took up the topic of the value of natural marriage consecrated as a sacrament by God, speaking of the maternity of women and the paternity of men for the benefit of children as the basis of human happiness, of civilization and social stability. Referring to the miracle of the water and wine at the wedding at Cana, the pope said, Jesus teaches us that the masterpiece of society is the family. The most persuasive testimony of the blessing of Christian marriage is the good life of Christian spouses and families. There is no better way to speak of the beauty of the sacrament! But this masterpiece is being forgotten, even among Christians, the pope warned. They prefer, instead, to live together unmarried for limited periods, because many - even among the baptized - have little confidence in marriage and family. Even committed Christians, he said, do not think of sacramental marriage as a unique and unrepeatable sign of the covenant, which becomes a testimony of faith. Perhaps this fear of failure is the biggest obstacle to receive the word of Christ, who promises his grace to the conjugal union and the family...marriage consecrated by God preserves the bond between man and woman that God has blessed you since the creation of the world; and is a source of peace and good for the whole family and married life."
