SENIORS, ELDERS, AND GRANDPARENTS DAY Sunday, September 12, 2010 MUSIC & WORSHIP RESOURCES Nolan Williams, Jr., Lectionary Team Liturgist; Kenneth Mosley, Assistant Liturgist; J. Anthony Plenty, Assistant Liturgist; Ernest Bowman, Jr., Contributor, Director of Music and Arts, Greater Mt. Olive MBC, Baton Rouge, LA Worship Planning Notes Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the LORD. Leviticus 19:32, NIV With clarity, Leviticus 19:32 expresses our Lord s admonishment to show respect to our seniors. This honor is coupled with reverence for the Lord himself. To honor those who have molded us is to acknowledge God s gift to us through their lives. In short, honoring our elders also shows 1

reverence for God. Today, we gather to acknowledge those seniors, elders, and grandparents who have aided us individually and our community collectively. 1. Centering Prayer, Responsive Reading, and Litany Centering Prayer O God, of the many gifts you ve bestowed upon us, we do cherish the gift of our elders, grandparents, and seniors. Their experience, their wisdom, and their example are priceless presents to us and we value the many ways they have enriched our lives. We humbly ask that your strength and grace continue to rest upon them. We honor them today and always. In your blessed name we do pray. Amen. Responsive Reading True Wisdom: Job 28:12-13; Proverbs 3:13-26, 5-6 Litany Reader: People: Reader: People: Reader: All: Just as the Israelite elders were instrumental in assisting Moses and Aaron with their exodus, elders in our community have helped pave a way for the success and advancement of our culture. Because of their God-given wisdom, faith-filled tenacity, and unrelenting strength, we have made great strides as a people. After rearing their own children, many grandparents are faced with raising their grandchildren as well. May God grant them strength, peace, and resources to undertake this labor of love! We salute the living pillars of our community our elders, seniors, and grandparents. Your wisdom is irreplaceable; your life lessons, invaluable; your presence in our lives, unforgettable! We honor and celebrate you! 2. Hymns and Congregational Songs (a) Leave It There. By Charles A. Tindley. Tune, (LEAVE IT THERE), by Charles A. Tindley (b) Oh, to Be Kept by Jesus. By Thurston G.
