Old Greenwich, THE FIRST CONGREGATIONAL United Church Connecticut CHURCH OF GREENWICH of Christ Celebrating 350 Years ~ 1665-2015 Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost 6 September 2015 10 o clock in the morning Syrophoenician Woman

The First Congregational Church of Greenwich declares itself to be open and affirming; open to all for participation, membership, leadership and employment, and affirming of all who wish to join us as children of God. We continue to give thanks for God s guidance in our journey of faith. W e welcome you to worship here at The First Congregational Church of Greenwich. We re glad you chose to join us this morning. During this brief hour may you be lifted with hope, wrapped in love and filled with peace. PREPARING FOR WORSHIP Please silence all cell phones and other electronic devices. *All who are able please stand. PRELUDE Dr. Craig Scott Symons, organ Ricercare in C Minor Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706) CALL TO COMMUNITY Please sign and pass the red book. FIRST CHURCH FLASHBACK Rev. Richard S. DenUyl, Jr. Tad Larrabee PRAISING GOD *CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: God s touch of hope meets us in unexpected places. People: God s touch of kindness walks toward us when we are most alone. Leader: God s touch of healing reaches down into the depths of our souls. People: Let us open our hearts that we might be touched by God s love and surprised by God s grace.

CHORAL INTROIT *HYMN Come, Labor On Pilgrim (red) Hymnal 293 OPENING PRAYER (in unison) Eternal God, we gather today to thank you for creating the world and all living creatures. We come seeking the light of your Spirit and to live together as the people of Christ. Give us the strength to honor our covenant with you, that our souls might be restored in moments of doubt. Grant us the courage and insight to extend the grace of Christ to all we meet. Grant us your peaceful blessing as we journey through our lives. We pray as Jesus taught us saying, LORD'S PRAYER ( debts ) HEARING GOD'S WORD FIRST LESSON E Isaiah 35:4-7a nergize the limp hands, strengthen the rubbery knees. Tell fearful souls, Courage! Take heart! God is here, right here, on his way to put things right And redress all wrongs. He s on his way! He ll save you! Blind eyes will be opened, deaf ears unstopped, Lame men and women will leap like deer, the voiceless break into song. Springs of water will burst out in the wilderness, streams flow in the desert. Hot sands will become a cool oasis, thirsty ground a splashing fountain. Daniel Lepoutre From The Message

ANTHEM The Summer Choir O Love, How Deep Eric Thiman (1900-1975) O love, how deep, how broad, how high, How passing thought and fantasy, That God, the Son of God, should take Our mortal form for mortals' sake! For us He prayed; for us He taught; For us His daily works He wrought; By words and signs and actions thus Still seeking not Himself, but us. For us to wicked men betrayed, Scourged, mocked, in crown of thorns arrayed, For us He bore the cross's death, For us at length gave up His breath. For us He rose from death again; For us He went on high to reign; For us He sent His Spirit here, To guide, to strengthen, and to cheer. To him whose boundless love has won salvation for us through his Son, to God the Father, glory be both now and through eternity. Amen. SECOND LESSON F Mark 7:24-30 Jean Watkins rom there Jesus set out for the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house there where he didn t think he would be found, but he couldn t escape notice. He was barely inside when a woman who had a disturbed daughter heard where he was. She came and knelt at his feet, begging for help. The woman was Greek, Syro-Phoenician by birth. She asked him to cure her daughter. He said, Stand in line and take your turn. The children get fed first. If there s any left over, the dogs get it. She said, Of course, Master. But don t dogs under the table get scraps dropped by the children?

Jesus was impressed. You re right! On your way! Your daughter is no longer disturbed. The demonic affliction is gone. She went home and found her daughter relaxed on the bed, the torment gone for good. From The Message *HYMN Breathe On Me, Breath of God Pilgrim (red) Hymnal 234 SERMON Have You Found Your Voice? Rev. Amen. *PRAYER OF DEDICATION THE SACRAMENT OF COMMUNION INVITATION PRAYER OF CONSECRATION WORDS OF INSTITUTION
