SUNDAY JULY 8: FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Readings: Ez 2:2-5/2 Cor 12:7-10/Mk 6:1-6a Do we believe that Jesus can do anything? The gospel today ends with the fact that Jesus could not perform any mighty deeds in his hometown of Nazareth because of the lack of faith. So often when I pray I constrain Jesus. I don't ask for the big things: rather than asking for a complete cure for a friend with cancer, I pray that God will guide the hand of the surgeon, or that he will strengthen my friend as she deals with chemo or radiation treatments. But why don't I ask for Jesus to cure the cancer, take it away, heal my friend completely? I pray for the ordinary means of healing, as if God cannot miraculously cure, as if God isn't bigger and can do much more than I can hope or imagine. Let us always keep our eyes fixed on the Lord and trust in his grace and mercy and not be afraid to ask for the big things. Note From the Pope, During the General Audience, Pope Francis explained that the Commandments are not commands, but rather invitations. The Holy Father said they're an opportunity to respond with gratitude to His saving love. The pope said if Christians' obedience is mere legalism, they should pray that God free them from this slavery. Fully accepting His offering of love inspires Christians' moral life and allows them to enjoy true freedom and an abundant life. SUMMARY OF THE POPE'S CATECHESIS: Dear brothers and sisters: In our continuing catechesis on the commandments, we now consider the text of the Decalogue, the Ten Commandments given to Moses on Mount Sinai. The text begins with the words: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery (Ex 20:2). God first identifies himself as our God, the God whose love sets us free from all that enslaves us. These words show that God s commands are really an invitation to respond with gratitude to his saving love, a love disclosed fully in the coming of Jesus his Son. Gratitude to God for his many gifts, and willingness to accept his offer of love, are at the heart of the Christian moral life; they inspire us to heed God s words and obey his commands. If our obedience to God s law is servile, mere legalism, then, like the ancient Israelites, we should cry out in prayer to be released from that slavery and to enjoy the freedom of God s beloved children in Christ. God wants to break every chain that binds us, so that, in loving obedience to his will, we can enjoy true freedom and life in abundance. Upon all of you, and your families, I invoke the joy and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ. God bless you! NEXT SUNDAY S READINGS Amos 7: 12-15 Psalm 85: 9-14 Ephesians 1: 3-14 or 1: 3-10 Mark 6: 7-13 The prophet hears what God proclaims (Ps) and is called to speak in God s name (1). The Twelve hear the message of Jesus and are sent forth to preach the good news (3). In Him have we been chosen to be full of love (2). If you would like information on the Knights of Columbus or information on joining the Watertown Council No. 259, go to the following web link www.kofc.org/joinus. Note From the Pastor,..I will be going on vacation this summer from July 17th to August 10th. I was told by the friends I visit in France that now that I am getting older, I need to take longer vacations. They love to comment on my age which really doesn t bother me, however, since my accident, I am beginning to feel it more often. Two of the three weekends I will be away, Fr. Bill Muench will be here. I know you will make him feel welcome. When I return, it will still be time for a Summer Social. It will be Thursday August 23rd from 5PM to 7PM in the Greystone Building. There will be beer, wine, punch, water, and all sorts of finger foods as in the past. All are welcome. Just call the office at 315-782-2468, so that we will have enough food and drink for all. It is a great opportunity to get together and get to meet new people. It s Our Church, It s Our Future is the theme for the Diocesan Wide Capital Campaign. It is important that everyone participate, because it is our future and our church and because 75% of the money raised stays here in our parish and only 25% goes to the Diocese. It is really our campaign more than the Diocese s. Early responses to the campaign have been very positive here at Holy Family. As of Commitment Weekend we had more than $276,000 pledged from 94 households. If you did not commit last weekend, I hope you are ready to commit this weekend. If you have any lingering questions concerning the campaign, please contact me. If I do not hear from you, I will be contacting you. Fr. ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP: Summer is here! Racheal Carson believes that If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement, and mystery of the world we live in. Is there some child you would like to take for a walk and help her/him discover the wonders of God s creation this summer?
