From The Pastor Gaudete et Exultate [Adapted from: Top Five Takeaways from Gaudete et Exsultate, by James Martin, S.J., in America, April 09, 2018.] The title of the Pope s new apostolic exhortation is: Rejoice and be glad! It is what Jesus said on the Sermon on the Mount. We should rejoice and be glad, because God calls us all to be saints. Wow! How can we respond to that? Fr Martin gives us five takeaways. 1. Holiness means being yourself. The Pope offers many examples of holy lives like: St. Thérèse of Lisieux, holy for doing small tasks; St. Ignatius of Loyola, who sought to find God in all things; St. Philip Neri, who was renowned for his sense of humor. They pray for us and give us examples of how to live. But we should always try to be ourselves find one s own path and bring out the best in ourselves. As Thomas Merton said, For me to be a saint means to be myself. 2. Everyday life can lead to holiness. No need to be a bishop, a priest or religious to be holy. We are all called to be saints mothers and fathers, students, doctors, lawyers, teachers and janitors. Francis calls them, Saints next door. We are to simply, live our lives in love and bear witness to God in all we do. No need to do big things. Saintly actions include: a loving parent raising a child; the small gestures and sacrifices we make, like not gossiping. All that is needed is to see your life as a mission. No need for mystic raptures, or moping around with lowered eyes, or hiding away in a monastery. But get out of the rat race and stay balanced. 3. Two tendencies to avoid are Gnosticism and Pelagianism. These are two modern dangers in the spiritual life. Gnosticism, from the Greek word for to know, is an old heresy with a new slant that says that what matters most is what you know. No need to be kind, loving or do good works just the right mental attitude. Such people think that their faith can be distilled and made concretely comprehensible and they try to force others to adopt their way of thinking. They believe that they must have an answer for every question. But being a know-it-all is not going to save you. The second thing to avoid is Pelagianism, named for Pelagius, who thought that we can save ourselves through our own efforts. They trust in their own powers, don t think they need God s grace and think that they are superior because they observe certain rules. They often have, an obsession with the law, an absorption with social and political advantages, punctilious concern for the church s liturgy, doctrine and prestige. It s a real danger to holiness because it robs us of humility, sets us over others, and leaves little room for grace. 4. Be kind! The best advice for living a life of holiness don t gossip, stop judging and, most important, stop being cruel. That includes online activities. Francis writes, defamation and slander can become commonplace since things can be said there that would be unacceptable in public discourse they completely ignore the eighth [commandment], which forbids bearing false witness or lying and ruthlessly vilifying others. To be holy, be kind. 5. The Beatitudes are a roadmap for holiness. The Beatitudes, which are Jesus list of blessed areas, are central to this exhortation. They are not only what Jesus means by holiness, they are also a portrait of our Lord himself. So we re called to be poor in spirit, meek, peacemakers, to hunger and thirst for righteousness, and so on. But especially this one: Blessed are the merciful. Pope Francis says mercy, one of the central themes of his papacy, has two aspects: helping and serving others but also forgiving and understanding. Jesus does not say, Blessed are those who plot revenge! And this is Francis overall summary of holiness: Seeing and acting with mercy.
