St. Aloysius Religious Education 2017-2018 1 st Grade 4:00pm 4:05pm 4:10pm 4:15pm Welcome (Moses and the Ten Commandments coloring page and to ensure accuracy, class attendance must be accurately recorded by a catechist and not another student - class attendance is an official document retained by the parish and the diocese) We Gather - in Prayer at the prayer table (use colored table covering for appropriate liturgical season) Use the Gospel Reading Hearing the Word from the previous Sunday in Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families book in the prayer box Story time at the Prayer Table a prime time to share our faith teaching children the Word of God. Read aloud the true story of God's amazing love for us in Catholic Book of Bible Stories written in reverent tone just for young children. Start at the beginning with God s Wonderful Creation read a new story each week and use God s Blessing to end the story. Review previous lesson using one of the pages from the Activity Book. 4:20pm Chapter #8 Getting Ready for The Savior God gave Moses rules so that people would know how God wanted them to act while they waited for a Savior. Jesus wants us to love in all we do and say! Treat others with love and respect. At the heart of Jesus life and teaching was the Great Commandment requiring love of God, of oneself, and of one s neighbor (all people we meet and know). His disciples were to express that love by obeying the commandments and by living the Beatitudes. Jesus declares, This is how all will know that you are one of my disciples, if you have love for one another. (John 13:35) We Believe - Prophets = holy men who prepared people for the coming of the Savior. Moses = the first prophet Ten Commandments = moral laws or rules given to us by God. Saint John the Baptist = the last prophet ( prepare ye the way of the Lord ) We Respond 10 Commandments Tablet and stickers There are 2 versions of the 10 Commandments listed below let s call them The Catholic 10 Commandments and The Children s 10 Commandments (these are just a simplified explanation of the Catholic 10 Commandments). On either side of the large tablet (use the construction paper tablets) have the children write the numbers 1, 2 & 3 on one side and then 4,5,6,7,8,9, & 10 on the other side. The children should cut out the 10 Commandments pictures and glue stick the pictures in order, as you discuss the commandments and their meanings.

4:55pm Closing Prayer Act of Love O my God, I love you above all things, with my whole heart and soul, because you are all good and worthy of all my love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of you. I forgive all who have injured me and I ask pardon of all whom I have injured. Ask the children to say a petition aloud for someone or something they would like to pray for. What does Jesus teach about love?
