Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy one is understanding. Proverbs 15:33 The fear of the Lord is the instruction for wisdom. Contrast those who do not respond to wisdom: Proverbs 1:29 Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord. B. Proverbs 16:6 By the fear of the Lord one keeps away from evil. Proverbs 23:17 Do not let your heart envy sinners, but live in the fear of the Lord always. II. Benefits to those who fear the Lord: A. Stability in life Proverbs 14:26 In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence. Proverbs 15:16 Better is a little with the fear of the Lord, than great treasure and turmoil with it. B. Reward Proverbs 22:4 The reward of humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, honor, and life. C. Prolonged life Proverbs 10:27 The fear of the Lord prolongs life, but the years of the wicked will be shortened. Proverbs 14:27 The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, that one may avoid the snares of death. Proverbs 19:23 The fear of the Lord leads to life, so that one may sleep satisfied, untouched by evil. D. Praise from others Proverbs 31:30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ecclesiastes 12:13 The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person.

Illustration of the Fear of the Lord: 2 Kings 17 :1-6 Israel was defeated by Assyria and taken into exile. :7-23 The reason for the exile was that: 1. They feared other gods by being obedient to the customs and requirements of those gods. 2. They did not keep God s commandments. :24, 25 Foreigners in Israel did not fear God and were cursed. :26-28 The problem was ignorance. The fear of the Lord needed to be learned. In order to obey, the people had to be taught the custom of the god of the land, that is, the commands of the God of Israel, the Jewish law. :29-33 The people attempted to serve all the gods, including the Lord. (see Deuteronomy 6:13, 14) :34-39 The people were exhorted to fear the Lord God only, by obeying Him and keeping His commandments, and not to fear other gods by serving them. :40, 41 The People continued to compromise by attempting to serve other gods as well as the Lord, Conclusion: The fear of the Lord is learning and obeying the commands of God. New Testament Examples of the Fear of the Lord 1. Prayer and Praise You who fear the Lord, Praise Him! Psalm 22:23 2. Spiritual Growth Let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. 2 Corinthians 7:1 3. Body Life Be subject to one another in the fear of Christ. Ephesians 5:21 4. Service Slaves, in all things obey those who are your masters on earth, not with external service, as those who merely please men, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. Colossians 3:22 5. Outreach So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria enjoyed peace, being built up; and going on in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it continued to increase. Acts 9:31
