Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained. (Marie Curie, first woman to receive a Nobel Prize) Perseverance is pivotal to withstanding the difficulties associated with conflict. Didn t you cringe each time your parents said, We are doing this because we love you, and some form of punishment was just around the bend. If you are like me, I was fine with just being loved and not having the consequences for my behavior. What happened to turn the other cheek and the Golden Rule? While growing up, my Mom used to say to us, if you can t fight in your family, then you can t fight the world. Being the baby of six kids, we would be in fist a cuffs and Mom would walk by saying Now kids, fight fair! We would stop in our tracks and try to figure that out. It didn t take away the tears, division, hurt feelings, and anguish. It did help with understanding today s Gospel. While we are growing up and striving to achieve some form of discipleship, we struggle and learn to fight for what we believe. Jesus says, Do you think that I have come to establish peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division (Luke 12: 51). Jesus reminds us following in His footsteps may cause conflict and that is okay. In fact, division is often encountered because the ways of society often conflict with our Christian slogan WWJD (What Would Jesus Do). The summer is winding down and the craze to get things ready for school is in full throttle. We may encounter some clashing with others when balancing time, getting last minute things done, and trying to make various deadlines. I am taking my second child to college and trying to prepare for that hug good bye when I pull away from his dorm. I vividly remember this same scenario when I dropped off my daughter Maggie for her first year at college. No tears at first for me, but about an hour later while driving home I cried like a baby. The next two kids are going into their senior year and freshman year of high school, respectively. The youngest is getting ready for sixth grade at Sacred Heart. The frenzy and whirlwind are worth it. No matter how much division (nice way of saying arguing) takes place, I know as long as we are trying to use our talents for Christ we are on the right path. To help in those times of division, a dear friend shared this with me to help when times are tough on those long road trips. Dr. Glenn would take his three sons on vacation and listen to constant bickering. When he stopped to get gas, he would take each son privately into the station. One by one his sons were allowed to pick out their favorite candy. The catch was they were sworn to secrecy to not let the other brothers know they were getting candy. No sharing of candy because he did not want any more fighting. The reward of candy outweighed their allegiance of brotherhood to share. Dr. Glenn would look in his rear view mirror and observe how each son would secretly bite into their candy, quickly chew it, and look around making sure the others did not see their delight. All the best for a blessed rest of the summer and enjoy the energy when kids argue as we learn the most amidst those times. ~Deacon John Fay

Sept. 4, 7:00-8:30 PM in Parish Center. Teens in Catechetical Ministry: In response to the much welcomed increasing number of teens interested in participating in our parish catechetical ministry a new policy is being implemented: The following policy conforms to the Archdiocese of Chicago Office for the Protection of Children and Youth directive as it pertains to Volunteers Under the Age of 18. The directive says that those under the age of 18 should not be left alone with children and they must be supervised by someone who is in full compliance. However, to engage, integrate, and capture the richness and experience of these volunteers in the classroom, and allow interaction with students that is meaningful, the following support role has been implemented by Sacred Heart Religious Education: The Assistant Catechist is a teen who has responded to God s call to share faith as a catechist. S/He is under the direct supervision of an adult lead catechist at all times. The duties of the teen catechist will include teaching and facilitating opportunities and will be determined in collaboration with the adult catechist. Class Assignments Those who have registered will be receiving their classroom assignments within the next 1-2 weeks. Please be attentive to your email info. Adult Faith Formation Opportunity Ite Missa Est: The Social Teachings of the Church Join us for a live streaming Webinar Series on the Social Teachings of the Catholic Church and the Eucharist. The Webinar Series will feature Gilberto Cavazos-González O.F.M., a Franciscan scholar, Professor of Spirituality and Director of the Hispanic Ministry Program at Catholic Theological Union. The series is offered by the Archdiocesan Office for Peace and Justice and will be held every Thursday evening in September from 7 8:00pm (followed by a short discussion) in the Parish Office Conference Room. Thoughts to ponder from this series: Every parish, every community is called to address the issues of injustice. This is your Faith, NOT somebody else s problem. How do you answer the question: are we in COMMUNION with one another? Join us for this interactive, educational opportunity! [Note: Ite, Missa est is the Latin concluding prayer of the Catholic Mass. Translated today as Go, the Mass is ended. Ite, Missa est literally means Go, it has been sent. ] Adult Faith Formation 2013-2014 Save the Dates! Following the music survey, discussion about the responses from the experiment, and prayer over the summer, it has been decided that the Adult Choir will remain singing at 10:30 and One Voice at 4:30 Mass. A major benefit of this shift is evident in the assembly s active participation in our liturgies. Our goal is to further build upon this foundation to enhance our vibrant community of worship. As we begin the fall season, we encourage anyone interested in music ministry to join one of our varied ensembles. With so many great choices, there is a place for everyone. If you are interested, please contact Todd at tgresick@shparish.com (5:00 Saturday Choir, Adult Choir), Carol at cnowatzke@shparish.com (One Voice), or Kathy at kjanega@gmail.com (Children s Choir) through the parish office or see us at the ministry fair August 24-25. Emily Taft, a summer communications intern with A Just Harvest, is seeking remembrances, stories, comments and pictures for a story board to be displayed at The Just Harvest s 30 th Anniversary Gala on October 27. (AJH will give us the story board following the event.) The goal is to honor the historic partnerships that have made A Just Harvest what it is today an organization capable of serving more than 54,000 meals and distributing almost 300,000 pounds of food in a single year while addressing the root causes of hunger. If you want to share your memories with Emily, you can reach her at emily@ajustharvest.org or 773-262-2297 ext. 25. Mass in the Neighborhood Thank You! Many thanks to Gerry & Jim Bellanca for hosting our Mass in the Neighborhood in their lovely garden last Saturday evening, August 10th. This special celebration of the Eucharist was a wonderful way to bring parish friends and families together. Thanks to all who attended!
