The God who saves us THE WELCOME WELCOME Welcome each child as they arrive. Hello. I m glad you are here! Come open the Treasure Chest to find today s treasure. Child unlocks the Treasure Chest to receive a stamp or sticker of a happy face. Let this stamp (or sticker) of a happy face help you remember to serve the Lord together with your friends. Remember, Lord is a special name for God. Teacher s Note: These activity centers are designed to reinforce the lesson through hands-on learning experiences either individually or in small groups with the guidance of the teacher. Choose the Bible Activity Centers that best suit the children in your class. Set up the activity centers around the room before children arrive. Allow children to move freely among them. COLORING CENTER: PRISCILLA AND AQUILA SUPPLIES Coloring pages of Priscilla and Aquila making a tent or just a tent, square of cloth, crayons DO Children attach a square of cloth to the tent and color their picture as they talk about today s story. TALK ABOUT Our Bible story is about Paul and his friends, Priscilla and Aquila. Priscilla and Aquila were tent makers. What are tents made of? (Heavy cloth.) The three friends would have sewn big pieces of heavy cloth together with lots and lots of thread. Can you add a square of cloth to the tent in your picture? PLAY-DOUGH CENTER: PACKING FOR A TRIP SUPPLIES Play-dough, cookie cutters, play-dough tools DO Children play with the play-dough while discussing today s story. Encourage children to make items for a trip with the play-dough. TALK ABOUT Paul traveled to many cities to tell people about Jesus. He would have spent weeks and months walking, riding, or sailing to the cities he visited. He wouldn t have been able to take much with him when he traveled. What do you take with you when your family goes on a trip? (Children respond.) Let s pretend we are going on a trip and use the play-dough to make some of the things we might want to take with us. THE WELCOME continued PUPPET CENTER: WHEN I GROW UP SUPPLIES 2-3 people puppets DO Using the puppets, children act out the job they would like to have when they grow up. TALK ABOUT Paul and his friends, Priscilla and Aquila were tent makers. That means their job was to make and repair tents. What job would you like to have when you are older? (Children respond.) Paul, Priscilla, and Aquila used their job to help people. How will you help people with your job? (Children respond.) Encourage the children to act out the jobs they ve mentioned with the puppets. Encourage them to show how they can help people with their jobs. BIBLE MEMORY VERSE CENTER: SHOUT IT OUT! SUPPLIES Unit 3 Bible Memory Verse Song He Is Mighty to Save DO Play He Is Mighty to Save. Allow the children to dance and move around while the music is playing. Occasionally stop the music, and have the children shout out the memory verse: The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. TALK ABOUT Paul, Priscilla, and Aquila served together by teaching others about Jesus. Let s practice our Bible Memory Verse with this game so we can teach it to our friends and family. The God who saves us THE WORSHIP Supplies: Praise music, optional: musical instruments Teacher Tip: To help children identify time set aside for worship, designate a special corner or area for singing, collecting offering, and watching the worship illustration. Play It s Praise Time as children move to that designated area. Who can tell me the name of a friend? (Children respond.) Let s thank God for giving us friends. Have the children bow their heads and close their eyes. Dear God, thank You for giving us friends who can help us work, serve, and teach about You. Amen. We can praise God with our friends. Sing: Let Everything That Has Breath. To serve God is to do things for Him. In today s story, we will learn about two of Paul s friends who served God together, Priscilla and Aquila. Lead children in saying Priscilla and Aquila. We can serve God together by singing and giving our offering. Sing: We Love while collecting the offering. Let s see if Delbert & Lello have heard of Priscilla and Aquila. Perform The Adventures of Delbert and Lello puppet script or read storybook: Prophets & Promises Unit 3, Lesson 16. Let s say our Bible Memory Verse together so we can teach it to our friends and family. Have the children face each other. Have half of the students say it to the other half and then switch roles. With my eyes on my teacher; Point to eyes. My mouth quiet as can be, Place index finger over mouth as quiet sign. I will listen to hear, Cup hand around ear. How God loves you and me. Hug self, point to others, and then self. Let s reach deep in our pockets and pull out our listening ears. Reach in your pocket and cup your hands behind your ears as if listening. Today, we are going to hear a story about two friends who served the Lord with Paul. Remember, Lord is a special name for God. But, before I tell you our story, I would like a few of you to help me review our Bible Memory Verse. Choose 2 or 3 children to help you. Have them face the class and say the Bible Memory Verse with the motions. Have the other children follow their lead. If you have time, allow additional small groups of children to teach the Bible Memory Verse. You did a great job teaching the Bible Memory Verse. You can be like Paul and his friends and teach others about Jesus. Handle the Bible as a special treasure, leaving it open to Acts 18:3. WATCH THE WORD: ACTS 18:1-4; ROMANS 16:3-5A Read the story below or retell the passage in your own words. To illustrate the story, show a picture of the Bible story from a children s Bible, the coloring page, or other source. Paul took a trip to Corinth. He stayed there with two new friends. Their names were Priscilla and Aquila. They all worked at making tents. Priscilla and Aquila worked together; With Paul, they served the Lord. The church met in their home, To learn about God some more. What did Paul, Priscilla, and Aquila make together? (Tents.) Who did Paul, Priscilla, and Aquila serve together? (The Lord.) Page 6 of 11

We can serve the Lord together THE WAY Teacher Tip: Craft and games can be presented at the same time in different areas or one at a time depending on class size and teaching style. CRAFT: TRAVELING PAUL Purpose: To remind the children that Paul, Priscilla, and Aquila served God together. Supplies: Sturdy paper, cardboard, felt, craft stick, tape or glue, crayons or markers Prepare: Print and cut out Paul, Priscilla, and Aquila standing together. Place sturdy paper horizontally. On the left side, draw the outline of a tent. On the right side, draw the outline of a Bible. On the bottom, print: Paul, Priscilla, and Aquila served the Lord together. Acts 18:1-4; Romans 16:3-5a From felt or cloth, cut a square the same size as the tent. Adaptation for Ages 2-3: This craft has been adapted from the curriculum for ages 4-5. 1. Attach the felt or cloth square to the tent. 2. Color the Bible. 3. Color Paul and his friends and attach them to a craft stick. 4. Show children how to move the stick puppet from the tent to the Bible. 5. Paul, Priscilla, and Aquila worked together. What did they make? (Tents.) Can you hold the friends over the tent? As children move the stick puppet to the tent, you may ask them to share the name of one of their friends. 6. Paul, Priscilla, and Aquila served God by teaching others about following Jesus. Where do we read stories about Jesus? (The Bible.) Can you hold the friends over the Bible? As children move the stick puppet to the Bible, you may ask them to share some of their favorite Bible stories. Craft Discussion: Who did Paul, Priscilla, and Aquila serve? (The Lord.) To serve God is to do things for Him. There are many ways we can serve God together! Helping others is one way we can serve Him. What would you like to do to serve God with your friends? THE WAY continued GAME: TENTMAKERS TOGETHER Purpose: Children will practice working together to put up a tent as Paul and his friends did. Supplies: Bed sheets or blankets, large tables, Unit 3 Bible Memory Verse Song He Is Mighty to Save or other praise music Prepare: Place a large table where a sheet can be easily pulled over the top to create a tent. Option: Arrange several sheets and tables together to create a larger tent. Play this game before Watch the Word, then read the story while you are all inside the tent. Paul and his friends made tents together. Do you think we can make a tent together just like Paul, Priscilla, and Aquila? 1. Spread the sheet on the floor. 2. Children stand on all sides and grasp an edge of the sheet. 3. Lift the sheet high and pull it tight. 4. Walk together around the edges of the large table, lifting the sheet over it. 5. Place the sheet on top of the table so the edges drape over the sides of the table. 6. Let s crawl inside the tent and enjoy our hard work! You did a great job working together! 7. Play the Unit 3 Bible Memory Verse Song or other praise music while the children are sitting in the tent. GAME: TEACH TOGETHER Purpose: Children will work together to teach the Unit 3 Bible Memory Verse. Supplies: Bible Paul and his friends Priscilla and Aquila worked together to teach people about the Lord. We can work together to teach our Bible Memory Verse to someone else. 1. Practice saying and signing the Unit 3 Bible Memory Verse together. The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. Zephaniah 3:17a (Lord) Make "L" shape with right index finger and thumb. Move L from left shoulder to right hip as a royal sash. (you) Index finger points straight ahead. (mighty) Push fists up and forward in a forceful manner. Have one group teach the Bible Memory Verse to the other group, then do it again, switching roles. 4. Have the children share different ways they can serve the Lord. Page 8 of 11

THE WAY continued SNACK: FRUIT-FLAVORED TENTS Purpose: Children will think of someone with whom they can serve God. Snack Suggestion: Fruit leather (such as Fruit Roll-Ups) Serve snack. Let s pretend we are making tents together with Paul, Priscilla and Aquila. Can you make your snack look like a tent? Show children how to pinch the middle of the fruit leather/fruit Roll-Up and push down the sides to look like a tent. 1. Serve snack and drink. 2. Let s sing the Blessing Song. Sing to the tune of Frere Jacques or another familiar tune. God our Father, God our Father. Once again, once again, Thank You for our blessings. Thank You for our blessings. Amen. Amen. 3. Pray. Lead discussion below while children enjoy their snack. Paul and his friends served God together. They taught others about Jesus and God s Word in the Bible. To serve God is to do things for Him. Helping others is a great way to serve God. Who can serve God with you? (Friends, family, people at church, etc.) When only 5 minutes remain, begin this segment. FINAL FIVE MINUTES BIBLE MEMORY VERSE Gather children in a circle sitting or standing and practice the words and motions. The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. Zephaniah 3:17a PRAY Let s pray together. Say a closing prayer with the children. (Lord) Make "L" shape with right index finger and thumb. Move L from left shoulder to right hip as a royal sash. Zephaniah 3:17a GAME: BIBLE MEMORY VERSE CHEER Purpose: Children memorize and review the Unit 3 Bible Memory Verse. Supplies: None 1. Practice the Bible Memory Verse together. 2. Divide children into two groups. Each group stands on opposite ends of the play area. 3. Group 1 whispers, The Lord your God is with you. 4. Group 2 whispers back, He is mighty to save. 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 three more times, getting louder each time, until the children are using their strongest voices. 6. Have the groups switch phrases and play again. Page 10 of 11

GOT TIME? continued GAME: GOD IS WITH YOU Supplies: Beanbag, Unit 3 Bible Memory Verse Song He Is Mighty to Save Our Bible Memory Verse reminds us that God is always with us. Let s play a game to practice our verse. When I toss the beanbag to you, I want you to catch it and say, He is mighty to save. 1. Stand in a circle with the children. 2. Face one of the children in the circle. Say to him or her: The Lord your God is with child s name. 3. Toss the beanbag to the child. 4. Child replies, He is mighty to save. 5. Child tosses the beanbag back to you. 6. Repeat until each child has a turn. 7. At the end of the game, sing the Unit 3 Bible Memory Verse Song. STORY TIME Gather the children and read a favorite story. This can be a Bible story, a chapter from The Adventures of Delbert & Lello, or a story about working together to serve the Lord. PONDER, PRAY & PLAY Unit 3, Lesson 16: Priscilla and Aquila PONDER! God gave Paul friends who worked, served, and taught with him (Acts 18:1-4; Romans 16:3-5a). Who did Paul and his friends teach others about? (Jesus.) PRAY! Pray this prayer each day this week: Lord, thank You for giving us friends so we can serve You together. Help us to serve You in some way every day. Amen. PLAY! Work together with your family to build a tent, just like Paul, Priscilla, and Aquila worked together.
