TheMessage A Publication of the Muslim Community Center, Chicago, IL Vol. 49a / No. 1 / Rabi Al-Awwal- Rabi'ul-Akhir 1439/ January 2018 President s Report Dear Brothers and Sisters, السالم عليكم, I pray and hope that Insha'Allah you and your families in good health and Imaan. Welcome to the year 2018. I pray and wish that year 2018 bring peace, health, happiness, prosperity, and strength in Islamic faith for you and your loved ones. MCC elections for the year 2018 were held on second Sunday, December 10, 2017, at both locations, MCC, Elston and MEC, Menard facility. I would like to congratulate the MCC Election Committee and Nomination Committee for successfully conducting the elections this year. There were multiple positions in different categories of board members in addition to the position of President. Our young MCC member who was literally born and brought up in MCC has been chosen the President for next 2 years. The democratic process leading to election results is not easy, and at times confusing. But at the end, we are so grateful for the people who pointed to us our deficiencies that many times are hidden without our knowledge. Being humans, we have these deficiencies and are bound to commit errors, but once these deficiencies and errors are known, we try to improve upon. You have given an opportunity to correct these flaws, Alhamdulillah. At the end, no one loses, everyone wins. Everyone deserves a congratulatory salute. MCC lives to its principals. And we work to improve on our deficiencies. Once again, I would like to reach out to all the participating candidates, the board of directors, committee members, school parents and MCC mem(continued on page 3) MCC Election Results The December 10, 2017 MCC Election results are as follows: President: Kamran Hussain Director (General 2 vacancies for 3 years): Habib Abbasi Ateeq Ansari (Write-In) Director (Women 2 vacancies for 3 years): Saba Khan Musarrath Khan (Write-In) Director (Youth 3 vacancies; 2 for 3 years, 1 for 1 year): Hajar Berrada (3 years) Ali Quadri (3 years) Asrar Ahmed (1 Year) (Write-In) On behalf of the Election Committee, Congratulations to all the winners. Be proud of your hard work, but be mindful of "the real hard work" that lies ahead of you. And we must all now work together for MCC, to help make the organization as best as can be. Let's put all our differences aside and find ways to work together, not finger point or blame. This was an intense campaign, full of passion by not only the candidates, but the members as well. Let's carry that passion forward and channel it in a positive way; Allah (SWT) will only help us if we choose to be helped. Our committee has fought hard to ensure the process is more organized and done with extreme care. As the Election Chair, I do not take this responsibility lightly and I will do whatever is in my power to make the system as smooth, fair and transparent as possible with the resources I have available. A handful of voters may have been turned away due to our new rules, but these rules have been set in (Continued on page 2)

(Election page 1) place to prevent abuse of the system, and the system is only as good as those who will stand up to enforce them. And that will always be my first and foremost priority. I would like to thank ALL of the candidates who actively participated in this democratic process. Please know that even if you didn't win, your support is very much needed by the MCC. The organization is nothing if it doesn't have the support of its people. The beauty of a democratically run institution is that we all can participate in the system to make it better; we don't sit on the sidelines and just come to a center owned by one person or family, passively listening to lectures or just praying. This place is all of OURS. It may not be perfect, but we can all work to make it better. I would like to thank my team that worked so hard, supported the new systems I have tried to put in place, providing suggestions, performing all the necessary tasks needed and staying up so late to count the votes. Others that help make this election possible: Various other volunteers that helped on election day, Nomination Committee, Building Committees, MCC Office Staff, Tahir Ali, the IT Department, and Publication Committee. I truly apologize if I ve left anyone out, but know your help was very much appreciated. May Allah (SWT) reward you for all your help. May He guide us all to deal with our challenges with patience and grace. Ameen. MCC Election Committee Chair Interfaith & Outreach Event Remembering Our Past MCC Part-Time Academic School Council Teacher s Training Seminar MCC Interfaith and Outreach committee presented Remembering Our Past to Protect Our Future, a panel discussion featuring two inspiring women. After Asr prayers, we broke into groups. One group was learning and discussing how to teach Quran & Tajweed. The second group Seerah and Theology for the primary grades, and the third Seerah and Tajweed for intermediate and upper grades. At the end participants were asked to fill out evaluations, so we could address the teachers needs better the next time around. We received nineteen evaluations. (President: Continued from page 1) bers to work together for the benefit of the community. If any ill feelings were born, let s forget those feelings and work as a team by supporting each other. I will advise our new team to reach out to everyone individually and collectively to establish its agenda for the year 2018 and beyond. This is my last message to you as the President of our beloved organization, MCC. I would like to thank Allah (SWT) and the community to help me in my 4 years as the President of such a prestigious Muslim Organization. Although I tried my best to keep MCC as a vibrant organization, there still may be some shortcomings left in my work. I ask Allah (SWT) and the community to forgive me if I hurt someone s feelings, or if I could not fulfill the hopes of the community. My big thanks to all the board members, Committee members, Council members, department heads and school administration including teaching staff for working very closely with each other and with me for the last four years. I wish you the best and please keep up the good work whether you get the responsibility of heading any committee or not. Lastly, make sure you renew your MCC membership at the beginning of the year. MCC general body meeting will be on 3rd Sunday of January (January 21st) at MEC basement where annual President's report and MCC financials will be presented. You and your spouse are encouraged to attend the meeting. MCCA News MCC Academy Definitely Has Got Game! This is a record year for MCC Academy high school freshmen alumni athletes. We have more graduates than ever before who made the freshmen basketball team at their respective high schools, Masha Allah! Way to represent! Last month, MCCA Teacher and former basketball coach Mrs. Nada Gomaa dropped by Niles West High School to watch and root for the three recent MCCA alumni ladies who made the cut to play on the Niles West High School freshman girls basketball team! Isma Manzoor, Mina Jbara, and Haaniyah Ghiasuddin are proudly enjoying their new team where these three also happen to be the only hijabis on the court, representing their deen and bringing their skills to each game. We are also incredibly proud of freshmen alumni boys who made the basketball teams this year at local high schools: Hamza Khan, Abdurrahman Ibrahim, Farhan Ahmed at Niles West and Faisal Shethwala and Haroon Salahuddin at Niles North. MCCA coaches do their best to keep track of our athlete graduates and often feature them at play on the MCCA Crescents Instagram feed. It s been incredible to watch many of our alumni over the years go on to play in a multitude of high school and college sports from wrestling, soccer, track, cross country, football, swimming, and more. We re especially pleased that many of these alumni have come back to serve kids at the MCCA as coaches and assistant coaches. Please continue to keep all of our students in your duas. Message From The MCC President Make Your Donations To MCC In December Get Tax Deductions Dear MCC Community, As-salaam Alaikum, as the year is winding down, the tax season will start soon. One great way to reduce your taxes is to give charitable donations to Not-for-profit organizations. And your own MCC is a Not for Profit. By giving a donation to MCC, you get multiple rewards: 1. You help a Masjid where so many Muslims pray and an organization that provides diverse services to the community. Your donation will help run many community programs thus making a way towards Jannatul Firdous, Insha Allah. 2. You will have to pay fewer taxes since you can claim your donations as a deduction. 3. If you give Zakat or Sadqa money, you fulfill a religious obligation. Make sure that you make your donation either by check or by credit card. MCC will issue you a receipt and send a thank you letter before you file your taxes. If you pay by cash, make sure you get the receipt right away. If you pay by credit card this month you do not have to pay for at least until January but you can still claim the deduction on your taxes. I, therefore, request you to take advantage of this month and hurry up to donate to MCC to get multiple benefits. Jazakallah for your donations. M. Sawar Nasir President (Hafiz) Abdullah Al-Ahmadi During the last month, four lectures in the Arabic language were delivered on Saturdays on the biography of Prophet Muhammed (S.A.W.) at MCC-Elston Masjid. The lectures were organized by the MCC Religious Affairs Committee. The lectures were delivered by (Hafiz) Abdullah Al- Ahmadi who has a bachelor s degree in Islamic History. People of Arabic background enjoyed the informative Arabic lectures. At MCC, we do have lectures in languages other than English. We should make a concerted effort to go through a detailed biography of Prophet Muhammed (S.A.W.) at least once in our life. There are many lecture series (more than 100 videos) on the internet which we can watch in detail to increase our knowledge about our beloved Prophet Muhammed (S.A.W.). - Mufti Nazim Mangera
