RE New Curriculum Sept 2015 The following units have been adapted from the Bolton SACRE Syllabus. These are guidelines and may be adapted to suit the needs of your class. However please ensure that you have checked the ARE for your year group to ensure the objectives have been taught. Year 1 Who is a Christian and what do they believe? How and why do we celebrate special times? What can we learn from sacred books and stories? What does it mean to belong? Who is a Muslim and what do they believe? Religious buildings : : Who is Jesus and why is he important to Christians? Hook: Jesus Christmas Party- Nicholas Allan What is a story and why do we like them? How do we belong to other people? What do Muslims believe about God? Why are these places special? Investigate the teachings that Christians follow that tell them how to live their lives e.g. prayer and worship, behaviour to others Experience thanking being thanked, praising and being praised and connect this simply to an idea about worship. Describe some of the beliefs that Christians hold about Jesus e.g. Son of God, performed miracles, that he lives Why do Christians celebrate Christmas? What do you celebrate and why? Retell Nativity story Relate to previous topic Who is a Christian what do they believe? Symbols related to Christmas wreaths, Christingle Consider importance and value of celebration and remembrance in children s own lives Eid or Diwali Are there different types of stories? Where, how and why do people worship? How and why do believers show their commitment during the journey of life? Was there always such diversity in the country with religious beliefs or did most people believe the same thing? Look at the different religious beliefs within the class. Think about beliefs during the Stone Age what evidence remains that the Stone Age people believed in some higher power cave paintings, statues monuments Consider the beginnings of religion why would the Stone Age people need something/someone to worship? Mother Goddess vs Male God - who might they have believed in? Story of Hannukah (Known as Festivals of Lights) Can God free people from slaves? Menorah lit over eight days. How is this significant? Year 4 How should we live our lives? Who can inspire us to live good lives? How does the Indus Civilisation s beliefs compare to present day? What are the deeper meanings of festivals? What do the religions teach about the natural world? How and why does a Christian follow Jesus? How do I know what is right and what is wrong? How does religion help people choose between right and wrong? Explore teachings which act as a guide for living within Christianity (Ten Commandments) compare with Humanism principles (Golden Rule) Share stories from different religion of examples of how to live a good life Sikh Stories Dhuni Chand and the Needle Christianity Beatitudes (Blessed are those who ) Consider the value and challenge of for believers of following a code of living Discuss and debate the differences between right and wrong/ good and bad and how we know the difference Why do people give up riches, or even their lives for religion? Why are key religious figures seen as sources of authority? Consider what makes a person inspirational to others identify characteristic of a good role model Look at contemporary inspirational people How have they been influenced by their religion? Why is he so significant to Christians? How do the teachings of Jesus affect the way Christians live their lives? Talk about heroes from films and stories is a hero inspiring? What does inspiring mean? Rank and order different reasons why Jesus is still regarded as a source of inspiration and authority today Consider what kind of people they find inspiring and ask questions about inspiration for themselves

Year 5 Who is a Hindu and what do they believe? What will make our town a more respectful place? How do people live through good times and bad? How has religion developed in Britain? How can religious meaning be expressed through art? What happens in Hindu worship? How do their beliefs affect the way they live their lives? Develop understanding of key beliefs Dharma (duty) Karma, Ahimsa (non-harming) Enquire into Hindu beliefs about God Trimurti (Brahma creator, Vishnu preserver, Shiva destroyer) Reflect on the importance of beliefs and worship as guides for making choices in daily life What forms of guidance do pupils turn to when they need advice? Examine and draw meaning from festival Navratri (9 nights) Explore the importance of story and sacred text for Hindus how are stories shared and learnt from? What types of texts are important? Bhagavad Gita Spiritual significance of pilgrimage to Varanasi Describe the practice and meaning of Puja (worship) in the home and in the mandir (temple) Trip Temple (Mandir) to compare and contrast with worship in the home What religions are there in our area? How are they different to those in the rest of the country? Play a simple game statistics of religious beliefs in Britain today how religious is Britain? Why are there now more than 25 mosques in Bolton 60 years there were none. Consider using Bolton Faith trail. Develop understanding of harmony, community- not being the same but accepting differences how can we do that? Read and respond to prayers and liturgies how do these help people when they feel worried or sad? What were the main religious beliefs in Britain before the Vikings invaded? What did the Vikings believe and how did they influence religion when they invaded? Investigate the Viking s raid on Lindisfarne monastery what religion was being practised there? Does this show which religion was being practised in Britain at the time? What did the Vikings believe in? How did they change their beliefs to fit in their new homeland Guthrum conversion to Christianity to become ruler of East Anglia Changes in burial rituals (pagan buried things with them, Christians did not) Compare Viking creation story to Christian creation story similarities/differences? How are different ideas to do with religion expressed through art? Look at examples of the art of heaven in which religious believers imagine the afterlife and respond with art work of their own How do stained glass windows allow Christians to reflect on key ideas of within Christianity? Discuss whether all people could read and write in the past. How would art work help religious believers in these circumstances? Why would the use of colour be important? Year 6 Slavery Why are stories of the same event different when told by different people? Can religion help to build a fair world and make poverty history? Why do some people inspire others? Mayan Civilisation how did the Mayans show their devotion to a higher being? What does it mean to be a Muslim? Have religions tried to stop slavery? Story of Moses did God send Moses to help the slaves? What would the slaves have done without Moses? Songs sung by slaves how does faith help slaves to overcome hard times? Black History Month Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks (Christian beliefs) How is modern day slavery taking place? What is being done to counteract this? Fair trade- fair wages How do stories change over time? Compare stories of the Nativity- Matthew and Luke Demonstrate using Chinese whispers Look at details in each angels, Magi (wisemen) Whose story is more realistic? Why?
