MOUNT OLIVE MISSIONARY BAPTIST STATE CONVENTION of New Mexico, Inc. Reverend James E. Forney, Convention President Andrew L. Trotter, General Secretary April 2, 2013 Dear Officers, Pastors and Honored Guests: I am delighted to welcome all of the delegates from the states of Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, Wyoming, and Minnesota to the Land of Enchantment the great state of New Mexico for the 42 nd Walter Cade Jr., Midwest Region Laymen Workshop. We have been praying and preparing for a prosperous workshop, rich in God s choice blessings. As we participate in this workshop, let us keep in mind what Paul told the Colossians, And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. (Col. 3:23-24). I also want to thank the committee members who worked to put together this workshop. Additionally, I am grateful to the Convention churches, pastors and individuals who made financial contributions to provide a foundation for the workshop. As David said, Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! To God Be The Glory, Reverend James E. Forney Reverend James E. God Bless You! Mount Olive Missionary Baptist State Laymen President, Meron Wilson Host of Annual Walter Cade Regional Laymen Workshop April 26-28, 2013 For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness Psalm 84:10 Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist State Ushers/Nurses Ministry Ruby Chris Dudley, President 8

The National Baptist Laymen s Regional Workshop concept began as a vision from God to Walter Cade, Jr. at the start of his presidency at his election as the laymen president at the National Baptist Convention s annual session in Cleveland, Ohio in 1971. Walter Cade, Jr. desired to involve more men in the national movement. To get more men to come to the national meetings, he knew he must get them familiar with the national work. Therefore, President Cade introduced the regional concept. A mininational meeting held on weekends in cities within driving distance of laymen, laywomen, junior laymen and pastors. These meetings were called workshops with the primary objective of fellowship among the delegates and to promote the work and ministries of the National Baptist Laymen. Danny Williams of Denver, Colorado was the state president of the Colorado laymen. He saw President Cade s vision and played a vital role in helping to implement the first regional workshop. The first workshop was held in Denver, Colorado in 1971 between laymen of Kansas and Colorado. In 1974 the states that came together for a regional were Kansas, New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona. The years 1975 through 1987 saw God sent growth as the laymen teams from Kansas traveled to various states to encourage laymen participation and promote the regional concept. Initially as states joined together for regional workshops they called themselves Three States, Four States or Five States, and eventually Midwest, Far west and Great Lakes, etc. to reflect the part of the country. Some of the first classes taught were, Stewards of Tithing, Bible Doctrine, Young Men s Work, and The Laymen s Program. The National Baptist Laymen s Regional Workshops are under the auspices of the National Baptist Laymen s Movement governing body. A regional coordinator is appointed and assigned by the president to give guidance in all aspects of the regional program. On January 21, 1997 at a special meeting held at the Fifth Street Avenue Baptist Church in Nashville, Tennessee during the annual Winter Board meeting, President Jerry Gash, on the recommendation of Billy Campbell named all regional workshops the Walter Cade, Jr. regional workshops. Walter Cade s vision has continued to thrive and grow under the ongoing leadership of subsequent presidents Jerry Gash, Deacon Harold Simmons and hard working others throughout this movement. 9
