Sri Swami Muktananda ji Satsangs in Rishikesh from January to March 2005 Notes by Gonçalo Correia

Preface In 2004 I had the opportunity of going 5 months and alone to India for intense Yoga Sadhana. I was blessed for participating in the Christmas Retreat in Shivananda Ashram where I met Swami Muktanandaji. After that, I started to participate in the Satsangs, near the Ganga, in the Shivananda Yoga Hall. I had thirst for knowledge so I tried to take notes of swamiji s teachings but some how that "was not working out". Then I simply decided not to take notes. I started to listen, I trusted and learned what is to be in silence. To my surprise after the satsangs, I remembered most of the teachings! So I started to meditate every day and taking notes after the Satsangs. After compiling and reviewing those pearls of Advaita and real meditation, with swamiji s permission, I m sharing these advaitic lectures with everyone. The introduction is from www.savitari.com, and the photos were taken by the same author of the website. Thanks to Yasmin. Porto (Portugal) 2010 Gonçalo Correia 1

Introduction Swami Muktanandaji was born in 1960 in Canada. He was only nine when he met his Guru, Sri Swami Chidanandaji Maharaj, the President of the Divine Life Society (DLS). In the early 1980s, Muktanandaji came to stay in Yogaville for a number of years. Later, he became one of the youngest Westerners to join the DLS monastic order. He recently was named by Swami Chidanandaji Maharaj to be an official representative of the DLS, traveling the globe. From a very early age, Swami Muktanandaji recalls having strong spiritual yearnings to be a monk. During a recent visit to Yogaville, he spoke very personally about his spiritual journey: I want to see God! He hasn t come yet! What is he waiting for? God is not coming! That is how I felt. I would cry to God. I went to bed angry at God. And, one night, Swami Chidanandaji came to my dream. And my body prostrated in front of him, as if it had known how to do it for a long time. His two big hands lifted me up, and he kissed me on the check. I woke up in the morning with the strange sensation of a presence that was lifting my soul up. In 1981, I met Swami Satchidanandaji who was going to play a great role also in my life, because I later spent so much time in Yogaville. Knowing that he was a brother monk of Swami Chidanandaji and that they were very close, I trusted him. I remember when I first met him. I was uplifted by his presence. I went to Rishikesh in 1986 for six months. I went again in 1991 and 1995. Then, in 1997, something happened. I had the visit, in a vision, from Anandamayi Ma and my Guru, Swami Chidanandaji. They carried a message with them that was adwaitic. It was a message about the Self, which was concerning what I am. I decided to go to India for intense sadhana. On my way there, I met Swami Chidanandaji in England and he asked me, Why are you going to India? I said, For intense sadhana, Swamiji. He said, Good! Then you go to Swami Brahmananda. Though I had been in India several times, I had never met Swami Brahmananda. He was like Ramana Maharshi, a sage established in the Absolute. When I arrived, Swami Brahmananda was having cardiac problems, so he was not giving classes. I said, Gee, that s weird; Swamiji sent me to be with Swami Brahmanandaji and now it is not possible to see him. Then a few days later, I met one of the residents of the Ashram, Divyabhava, on the road. She approached me, saying, You must do me a great service. You must massage the feet of a great saint. Oh, wonderful! Yes! What is his name? I asked. She replied, His name is Swami Brahmananda. So, the next morning, as I was learning how to massage his feet, I told Swami Brahmanandaji, This is interesting because Swami Chidanandaji sent me to you. He just smiled and took me under his wing and started to instruct me in a personal way. He would take me out and sit on the little steps in the sun and say, Now, how do you meditate? I said, Oh, Swamiji, when I meditate I feel like, in my head the whole sky is filled with light and I can remain in that peaceful state for a long time. And, he said, Good. That s good. But that is not enough. I thought he was going to say, Good, good; continue and keep on going like that. But, he said, It is good, but it is not enough. And then he told me, There is something that you remember when you are in deep sleep. What is it? I said, I don t know. Come back tomorrow. Meditate on that and come back tomorrow, he said. And, then I meditated upon that. I couldn t find it. I said to myself, Gee, I don t seem to be able to find anything. So, I went back the next day. I said, Well, Swamiji, would it be darkness? No! Come back tomorrow, he said. Gee, okay. I meditated upon deep sleep. Okay, okay, I think I have found out, Swamiji. Would it be silence? He answered, No. Come back tomorrow. Oh, come on, Swamiji, tell 2

me. But, he said, No, you come back tomorrow. So, I went back and meditated on deep sleep. Oh, Swamiji, this time I found it. It s peace. He said, Do you feel at peace when you are in deep sleep? Come back tomorrow. And, then I said, No, No, Swamiji. This time you must tell me. Alright, alright. Nothing! You remember nothing! I knew that! The way that he put the question, he really tricked me. But, it forced me for three days to meditate on the state of deep sleep Swami Muktananda ji Satsangs in Rishikesh Waking, dreaming and deep sleep states of consciousness 3 28th de January 2005 In deep sleep, after deep sleep we wake up and feel happy, full of energy. But we don t know from were that energy comes. We are not aware, I mean, the mind don t know, the ego don t know. So, its other dimension of joy and happiness on wich the mind don't interfere, don't know. Hum... interesting. In dreaming state, we find in a small place in our heart, this room, this glass, the mountains, the Ganga... We are able to create a reality so complex as if we were waked up. But we know, when we wake up, that was not real. It was a dream. We know we are not the person from the dream. So, the dreaming state teaches you that we are not the names and forms. The names and forms are on the level of thoughts that are created by the mind. But waking and dreaming state are absorbed by deep sleep. Deep sleep is very very important to understand our true nature. And our true nature is bliss, beyond the mind and the body. We must understand this point. When we meditate, and I'm talking going further, beyond concentration, like when we listen the noise, the persons in this room and at the same time we feel that presence, inner presence that is found in deep sleep. It's important to believe, because believing gives us the ability to experience other dimensions, to make it possible! Knowledge, real knowledge or better calling it consciousness or awareness, comes first than

experience. We know it, and then the experience comes. I'm not talking about intellectual knowledge because intellectual knowledge comes after experience. True knowledge we call it consciousness. Like we know we are not the same person that we see in a dream. We know it. Reality and thought Most of the people think Paris is real. 5ooo years ago there were nothing. But then they thought to build something and they did. It was nice. Then, man token iron from the earth, gave it a form and called it Tour Eiffel. But this is not the reality, this came from our thoughts. Paris came from human thoughts. Reality existed before Paris as a city, and will exist after, 5000 years after. Who is the I am? In order to know who is the "I" we need to know the "I am". The wave looking to the other waves see them as waves. The wave can never become the ocean unless the wave is aware she is water, her essence is water. Ho And the ocean is water. Gee... The waves exist because of the ocean. The wave exists because of the water. All this theory is very difficult to understand on the intellectual level, very difficult in deed, we need to experience it. I'm seeing you... I'm seeing you and we think, the ego thinks he is the knower, the controller. But somehow we stop seeing. I'm blind now. Who did this? What happened? I'm not the controller I don't understand?! If I act based on names and forms in the moment of death everything is finished. That s because names and forms have a beginning and an end. However I'm not the blind that you see. I am soul, spirit inside me. If I act on that level, I am eternal, infinite. I belong to God. Everything belongs to God. That's our nature. And happiness and success in life come from That. Hari Om Tat Sat What you really Are is inseparable from Peace and Silence 4 17th February 2005 When we rest in that inner peace which is silence inside, our thoughts became clear and there are no place for confusion and delusion in our mind. Bliss takes place. However, sometimes we can think that that bliss comes from the thoughts. In this sense we identify bliss with thoughts in our mind or sometimes with the experience on the sensorial level, the external world. Then, instead of resting inside we rest on the thoughts, on the sensorial experience. Sooner or later suffering and confusion comes, because thoughts come and go. The source of bliss, Bliss himself comes from inside, not outside. Inside to outside. Unless we cannot feel it, it s to difficult to live. When we feel it everything becomes clear. Good thoughts, bad thoughts, every kind of thoughts are in your mind. It doesn t matter, because you are established in peace. Doesn t exists such thing as bad action. Maybe looks like bad action, but it s not because you are aware of that inner peace, this inner peace inside. Only actions exist. In this sense there is no reaction. Why? Because you are established, you

rest on the root of the universe. You have the support of the Natural Law. How can reactions come? There is no such thing. Ego is sleeping. You re not anymore identified with your name and sex. You know you are That. You see That, It, everywhere. That Presence, that Silence. Doesn t exists such thing as bad action. Bad and good is duality. Unless you are established in the root of everything you will spend lots of energy, too much energy trying to be good, do good. Making effort to achieve this on the sensorial level, rational level is useless. Because all world of phenomenal experiences are changing all the time. This is what we call duality. Non duality is That or It. And that Silence is God, your words is God s words. And you are the witness or we can say the channel of God. There is no difference between you and God. Only One remains. Only One exists. Only One Is. Experiencing this is the purpose of meditation. Om Sometimes we feel it is very difficult to be good, do good. We feel we spend lots of energy, to much, it s hard. Why is difficult? Because you are trying based on the external world, on duality, on the always changing world of phenomenon. Only experiencing the Unchangeable, the inner presence inside you, makes possible to be good, do good. Why is difficult? Because you are trying to be what you are not, based on ideas. You are trying to remove or hide a mask with another mask. You are trying to be what you are not. Feel that peace, inner silence, let it be. In this sense there isn t such thing as bad action. Every action is only an action. Om The True Doer 18th February 2005 And there, in that inner Peace that we find trough interiority is God himself. When you rest there, feel that you are with God. And God there is your best friend. It s not simply peace, no. God is there with you. In this sense, God is a person, is seen as a person, on the manifested form God is Divine Mother. Incarnations of Lord Vishnu: fish, tortoise, pig, Rama, Krishna, Buddha. This is showing us that God is everywhere, in everything. After taking a decision, let the results in the hands of God. Don t think about that. It s not that you are doing, the mind, no, it s God doing trough you. And you abide in God, you belong to God because only God Is. 5

19th February 2005 The True Seer You are that by which this universe is seen. The observer is That, not the idea of I, the ego, the individual soul. You are not the centre of the universe, you belong to the universe. You think, that you only go to heaven if you purify your mind? So, in that case we are going all of us, to hell. (Laughts) The nature of the mind is to divide; there is nothing we can do to change it. Today swamiji talked about desire being the cause of suffering. And also talked about that is not possible to solve the problem at the level of the problem. The example given was about that demon who prayed to lord Shiva to make possible that from every drop of blood in the battle field, demons against gods, born from that blood more demons. It was Kali Ma who saved the gods and brought harmony again. "I am is doing, God himself 22nd February 2005 I'm not doing, "I am is doing. That silence, that peace is "I am", God himself, and is doing everything. When we see life like this, look to the world like this everything we need comes naturally to us. Is not that the wave is doing but the water is doing. If we think we are doing, we as individual human being, God says "ok, you think you are doing so do it..." The mother looks to her son and she thinks he or she is her son. So, she wants to take care of him. However he came alone, he did not exist before. Where did he come from? Sometimes mother, father, as the individual humans being think that he can control it, do this, do that, better than God himself. Self inquiry: Who am I? 6 23rd February 2005 You know yourself? Who are you, who are that which see? To have that answer we need to understand "I". Ramana Maharishi teach us the technique of inquire "Who am I?" Then he looked to the carpet and asked: "I am that?" The answer is "no". I'm this head? I don't know... let me think... So then we can close our eyes and meditate. And we feel that inner presence, peace and silence which is God, the "I am". So the answer is no, I'm not my head. But because we can look to that Presence, Peace and Silence, we can experience that and yet we know is Real. We still ask who is seeing.

Who is the Observer? Because something, someone is experiencing that silence. Gee... That is "I"! Is beyond the experience, so cannot be experienced or observed. It, she or he is the Observer. The "I am", we call it Hiranyagarbha. The "I" we call it Íshvara. "I am" can be looked, "I" cannot. "I am" is the water; "I" is the Ocean. The idea of "I" that we create in our mind is the wave. How to meditate on "I"? When you meditate believe as if you are in deep sleep. Try to create it in your mind. Doing this will help you to understand "I" and eventually, with practice, you will succeed. Yet in deep sleep we don't feel nothing, we cannot perceive nothing. However after coming out from it we know it. And we feel that presence. The "I am" is nothing less than "I" knowing Himself trough existence, on the manifested state. When we find "I" through meditation, the "I am" returns to "I". This means that the "I am" become one with "I" and only "I" remains. Because of that we cannot know "I". I is beyond thoughts In deep sleep we don't experience anything. In waking state and dream state we can have the experience because the mind is there. In deep sleep the mind is "not allowed". Also we have the intellect that can recognize "I am", because intellect is a smaller peace of "I am". The intellect is made from the essence of "I am", so can recognize "I am", have that vibrating nature. Why the mind is not allowed? Because trough the mind we have thoughts and desires. Unless they ceased we cannot know "I". Because "I" is beyond thoughts. "I" is the knower alone. He is doing everything. The idea of I, the ego thinks he is doing but in reality "I" is doing and everything is perfect. Om Swamiji Sayings on Ego, God and Advaita 24th February 2005 Sattvic ego is necessary to realise God. Sattvic ego is self awareness. And sattva is peace and silence. The soul is searching and then finds: I Am That Sattvic ego is I am. Love, true love is Advaita Living both worlds as One 25th February 2005 We create the wrong idea that we are doing, the idea of I" is doing it. But no, the "I am", that peace and silence is doing everything. Due to the crystallization of the limited "I" we cannot experience "I am". The world of the "I am" and the idea of I" are different worlds. But if you 7

recognize "I am" in you, you can live both worlds as one. Like the mirror glass on these windows: outside we cannot see inside, but inside we can see both sides. We pretend we control our memory, body... But all this actually doesn't belong to us. Only God alone Is. And He does everything. Put everything in his hands. Swamiji sayings on Truth and Life 3rd March 2005 That which creates time is that light of Truth believing in the world of images. We ve been blessed in this life trough three things: 1st human life, 2sd believing in God, 3rd Satguru To be that which sees more than anything else is the ultimate truth. Believing in God more than anything else is the goal It s not that I don t have doubts, because I have doubts. But also I feel that presence I am which is doing everything. In That, God him self I believe more than anything. It s a matter of choosing in what to believe. As the believing of a child. When I give a coin to a beggar I can think I m so generous. Also I can think Come on, I m not doing anything, God is doing. Identified with the supreme God alone Is. So the ego is there, sattvic ego is necessary to believe. Believing brings the opportunity to the experience come. Everything we (the individual and limited I ) want to posses, resist to come in one certain way. Then we spend lots of energy to have it. But if we tune ourselves to God, I am, That principle which is doing everything, all things we want, want to be possessed by us automatically. Everything we need. Our body becomes a body of peace and silence instead of a body of flesh and bones. Like the child holding the oars at the same time as his father. It looks like the child is rowing but no, his father is rowing. Trust God like a child. God alone Is. 22th March 2005 Swamiji sayings Beyond the world of names and forms there is God. God using a mask, this universe. Peace and silence is sense of existence. 8

Purpose of life is Awakening God realization is reconciliation with life and with God. Purpose of life is awakening. The only thing you need to awaken is determination of wanting God (more than anything else) and the excluding of anything else. The path you choose there is duty. In the path, for example marriage life, there is needs and desires. The God you may think off doesn t exist. Is a pore God. That which can see is really you. Beyond the existence and non existence. Desire is, not accepting the situation as it is. Knowing your self it s something to do with reconciliation. And I m not the human being, I m spirit. Both walk side by side, but the main thing is Gods will. The realised man, sometimes take diseases because sometime he take karma from the others. Your duty in this life is wanting for God. Give your doubts and problems to him. You want him more than everything.
