This family and descendants used the Alford and Alfred name interchangeably. Family legend is that David was born at sea on the way to this country. His parents died on the journey over. He was raised in Virginia by Aunt Junie and Uncle Pots. He was a furniture builder. He is supposedly buried in the Houston-Trinity County, Texas area. This information came from Burkley Alford, grandson of David T. Alford when he was age 88 and living in Onalaska, Texas. He was blind for many years. David, wife Mary and children were enumerated in Houston Co. TX 1850 and 1860. Mary: Mary was the head of the family in the census of 1870 and eight children still living at home. Christian, 22 Aug 1890. Is there any other Annie Alford/Alfred in Houston Co. but the daughter of Jesse and Ophelia Alfred? I can find no more information about A.L. Christian other than his presence in the 1880 census (born 1868 AL). In 1900, Annie is living with her parents with her son Mayfield and says she is divorced and has had two children, only one of whom is living (supposedly she and Frank A. Alford had a daughter Clara who only lived for about three months). Frank A., on the other hand, says he is a widow. I did think it was interesting that a Mayfield family is living next-door to him in 1900. Both of them remarry in the next few years, Frank to Sallie Gilbert in 1906 and Annie to Rueben Ustick in 1909. In 1910, family of Rube Ustick in Harris Co. TX, Annie is listed as her second marriage of one year. Another thing I don't understand is her death record-- 5

supposedly 18 Apr 1926 in Cherokee Co.?? As far as I can tell, all her Ustick children were born in Harris Co. I can't find them in 1920 but he died in Harris Co. in 1941." Lynn Shelley, Jan 5 2009 "I wish you luck in finding the descendants of Annie Alfred Alford. After my grandmother Ella died in 1896, Grandpa Frank moved deep into the piney woods to cut railroad ties. The David Alfred family lived nearby and Frank married Annie, who was mentally retarded. They had one son(mayfield) who was raised by his grandmother Alfred. Annie and Frank were divorced in 1901 and shortly thereafter Annie was admitted to the mental institution in Rusk, Texas. She died and was buried there in the hospital cemetery. I have a copy of both the marriage and divorce papers. "Mayfield married three times. His first two wives are buried in the Creek Cemetery. He had child by each of them. He had at least 7-8 children by his third wife Teresa. About 1943-44 Mayfield moved all the family to Louisiana- near Coushatta." Don E.
