Town of Schodack Soldiers in World War One In April of 1917 the United States declared war on Germany and prepared to enter the war raging in Europe. 224 soldiers from the Town of Schodack enlisted to serve. Over two thirds of these soldiers lived in the Village of Castleton. Soldiers from other parts of the town were represented as follows: Schodack Landing, 19; Nassau (part of Schodack), 17; Brookview, 13; East Schodack, 9; Schodack Center, 2; and South Schodack. Many of the soldiers remained stateside, but some did serve overseas. No soldiers died of disease during the war, but three were killed in action. Most of the soldiers held the rank of private, but about 10 were officers including lieutenants, one captain and two majors. There was one woman who served as a nurse and one private who was identified in the records as colored. The following list shows the soldiers from the town of Schodack who served in the war. The list is organized by locality within the town and shows the rank of officers. The names are also displayed on a bronze Honor Roll plaque in front of the Andrews Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars on Scott Avenue in Castleton.
