DAVID'S TROUBLED FAMILY. ABSALOM MESSAGE REPROBATE ABSALOM THE PRODUCT OF A SPLINTERED HOME. 1-29-17 Evening Message Introduction to problems: David was a man after God's heart, yet he had problem after problem with his family and children. Maybe other Kings had similar problems, but we don't read about in Scripture. For some reason the Lord wanted us to read about the problems that David had. He had a fractured home. WHAT ARE THE THINGS THAT SPLINTER A HOME TODAY? I. DAVID GROOMED HIS FAMILY FOR PROBLEMS BECAUSE OF HIS SPLINTERED HOME: POLYGAMY, ETC. MULTIPLE WIVES. It was as if the children of Israel just ignored God's warnings about multiple wives. So we too ignore God's warnings today. Here is a list of 6 sons by 6 different mothers born in Hebron: 1. Son of Ahinoam: Amnon the firstborn II Samuel 3:2 And unto David were sons born in Hebron: and his firstborn was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; 2. Son of Abigail: (Chileab or Daniel) II Samuel 3:3 And his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and I Chronicles 3:1 Now these were the sons of David, which were born unto him in Hebron; the firstborn Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; the second Daniel, of Abigail the Carmelitess: 3. Son of Maachah: Absalom the third, Absalom the son of Maachah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur; We read he had a sister but no other children. Obviously his mother was not one of David's favorite wives. Many think he took her to wife to make a league with Talmai King of Geshur. 4. Son of Haggith: Adonijah II Samuel 3:4 And the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and 5. Son of Abital: Shephatiah the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital; 6. Son of Eglah: Ithream II Samuel 3:5 And the sixth, Ithream, by Eglah David's wife. These were born to David in Hebron. 7. THERE WERE OTHER WIVES. BATHSHEBA BEING THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL Chronicles gives a listing of these: 1

A. 6 Sons born in Hebron I Chronicles 3:1 Now these were the sons of David, which were born unto him in Hebron; the firstborn Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; the second Daniel, of Abigail the Carmelitess: I Chronicles 3:2 The third, Absalom the son of Maachah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur: the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith: I Chronicles 3:3 The fifth, Shephatiah of Abital: the sixth, Ithream by Eglah his wife. I Chronicles 3:4 These six were born unto him in Hebron; and there he reigned seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years. B. SONS BORN IN JERUSALEM a. Notice there were 4 sons born of Bathsheba: I Chronicles 3:5 And these were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shimea, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon, four, of Bath-shua the daughter of Ammiel: b. Nine other sons I Chronicles 3:6 Ibhar also, and Elishama, and Eliphelet, I Chronicles 3:7 And Nogah, and Nepheg, and Japhia, I Chronicles 3:8 And Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphelet, nine. I Chronicles 3:9 These were all the sons of David, beside the sons of the concubines, and Tamar their sister. c. Besides the sons of his concubines So there were a total of 19 Sons named and one daughter and the unnamed sons of untold concubines. THIS WAS A SPLINTERED FAMILY! A splintered family will produce alienation and division: So it is today. Divorce and remarriage has splintered many a home. Back in the day of David, it was Polygamy. Notice when you read about the sons of Jacob, who was it that Joseph wanted to see more than any of the other brothers? Benjamin and Joseph had a special kindred love, and Benjamin was the only brother that had no hard feelings and was not envious of Joseph. Children by different women produce a spirit of division in the home. Animosity, Jealousy, ill feelings II. WHAT ARE THE THINGS THAT SPLINTER A HOME TODAY? 1. DIVORCE 2

Malachi 2:14 Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. Malachi 2:15 And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. Malachi 2:16 For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously. The worse thing about a splintered home is what it does to the children. When a home is broken the children are affected, just like when a nest falls to the ground few chicks survive. 2. SIN Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Sin brings all the elements of death into a persons life, as well as into a home. You can't play with fire and not be burnt! Sin produces God's wrath, and when people are given to sin they will surely reap confusion and destruction. 3. CONTENTION AND FIGHTING James 3:14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. James 3:15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. James 3:16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. James 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. James 3:18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. James 4:1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? James 4:2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. James 4:3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. James 4:5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? James 4:6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. 3

Note: James attributes the contention and fighting to who? 4:7 James 3:14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. James 4:6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 4. IMMORALITY: Incident with Bathsheba II Samuel 12:1 And the LORD sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor. II Samuel 12:2 The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds: II Samuel 12:3 But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter. II Samuel 12:4 And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him; but took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him. II Samuel 12:5 And David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die: II Samuel 12:6 And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity. II Samuel 12:7 And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul; II Samuel 12:8 And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things. II Samuel 12:9 Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. Here is the prophecy that caused the incident with Absalom: II Samuel 12:10 Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife. II Samuel 12:11 Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun. II Samuel 12:12 For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun. II Samuel 12:13 And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die. II Samuel 12:14 Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die. 4

II Samuel 12:15 And Nathan departed unto his house. And the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife bare unto David, and it was very sick. II Samuel 12:16 David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth. II Samuel 12:17 And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them. II Samuel 12:18 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he would not hearken unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead? II Samuel 12:19 But when David saw that his servants whispered, David perceived that the child was dead: therefore David said unto his servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead. II Samuel 12:20 Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel, and came into the house of the LORD, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat. II Samuel 12:21 Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread. II Samuel 12:22 And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be gracious to me, that the child may live? II Samuel 12:23 But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me. II Samuel 12:24 And David comforted Bath-sheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon: and the LORD loved him. II Samuel 12:25 And he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, because of the LORD. III. ABSALOM WAS A PRODUCT OF A SPLINTERED HOME Most problems that we have with young people of America is problem of a splintered home.. Multiple marriages. Estrangement from the Father. These are but tools in the hands of Satan to tempt young people to be alienated from their fathers. Ultimately the devil can tempt a person but when a person gives in to temptation they are responsible for their actions. NOT EVERYONE FROM A SPLINTERED HOME HAS TO GO INTO REBELLION. BUT THE DEVIL USES THE HURT OF A BROKEN HOME TO TEMPT, PROD, AND LEAD A PERSON INTO REBELLION AND DISDAIN FOR GOD AND PARENTS!! Absalom Mother was the daughter of the King of GESHUR. I Chronicles 3:2 The third, Absalom the son of Maachah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur: the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith: It is quite possible.. that David married Absalom mothers to make an alliance with one of the Kings that bordered the Land of the Philistines. 5

He did this out of expedience, seeking refuge from Saul.. It is possible.. Absalom felt he was superior to his other brothers, but yet thought he was treated with less respect than he deserved. AFTER ALL, HIS GRANDFATHER WAS THE KING OF GEHSUR!!! So his non Jewish mother may have been the kindling that sparked that seed of rebellion in his heart!!! Before rebellion comes pride. Often, all the good a godly Father can do can be undone by an ungodly mother. Pride is a precursor to rebellion! So Absalom was proud, and may have felt some disdain for not being the preferred son of the Family! He was second in line to Amnon whose mother was of the Jewish town of Jezreel! Jezreel was a nothing town and Amnon's mother was probably just from a common background. IV. BOTTOM LINE FOR ALL THIS WAS ABSALOM HAD NO RESPECT FOR HIS FATHER AND ABSALOM HAD NO FEAR OF GOD. God ordained that each man have one wife, and the wife one husband. Why? Because this is what it takes to produce a godly seed. Less likely to produce bitterness among the children. Less likely to have children who are alienated from their parents, especially the father. Even in Jacob's situation where his wives were sisters there was ill feelings among the sons, especially against Joseph. The safety net for the spiritual welfare of your children and family is for a husband and wife to have a good marriage. The Lord warns his people that this is what it takes to have a godly seed! Ultimately, it is the fault of Absalom that he turned into a reprobate, but David made an atmosphere in his home that provided the incubator for this evil son to be nurtured into such a monster. 6

My wife reminded me that years ago Pastor Dave Vuchish preached a message in our church taken from this passage. II Samuel 18:33 And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son! He hinted in his message that David had great regrets over the death of Absalom and the title of his message was "I WISH I HAD.." In other words at the end of David's life he may have said, I WISH I HAD NOT HAD SO MANY WIVES. I WISH I HAD NOT KILLED URIAH THE HITTITE. Don't live your wife with I WISH I HAD regrets. Heed the advice of the proverb that says: Proverbs 5:15 Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well. Proverbs 5:16 Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets. Proverbs 5:17 Let them be only thine own, and not strangers' with thee. Proverbs 5:18 Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. 7
