The Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea Palm Beach, Florida Good Friday April 3, 2015 Noon 1

Welcome to Bethesda-by-the-Sea! A large-print version of this service leaflet is available from one of our ushers. If you are a visitor, have a prayer request, or would like more information about Bethesda-by-the-Sea, please fill out the card found on the back of the pew in front of you and place it in the offering plate. Those entering or leaving the service are asked to do so only during the congregational hymns, as indicated in the service leaflet. In case of an emergency Bethesda has two AEDs (Automated External Defibrillator) available in the sound booth at the back of the church and on the south wall in the Parish Hall. The congregation stands as the Procession enters in silence; all then kneel for a period of silent prayer. Introit Call to Remembrance Richard Farrant Call to remembrance, O Lord, thy tender mercy and thy loving kindness which hath been ever of old. O remember not the sins and offenses of my youth: but according to thy mercy think thou on me, O Lord, for thy goodness. The Officiant stands and says Officiant Blessed be our God. People For ever and ever. Amen. Collect for Good Friday Almighty God, we pray you graciously to behold this your family, for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed, and given into the hands of sinners, and to suffer death upon the cross; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The congregation is seated. Those wishing to enter or leave the service may do so during this hymn. Hymn 167 Go to Dark Gethsemane Horsley, Organ Meditation and Prayer Anthem Lord, Let Me Know Mine End Maurice Greene Lord, let me know mine end and the number of my days: that I may be certified how long I have to live. Behold, thou hast made my days, as it were a span long: and mine age is even as nothing in respect of thee; and verily every man living is altogether vanity. For man walketh in a vain shadow, and disquieteth himself in vain; he heapeth up riches, and cannot tell who shall gather them. And now, Lord, what is my hope? Truly my hope is even in thee. Hear my prayer, O Lord, and with thine ears consider my calling. Hold not thy peace at my tears. O spare me, spare me a little, that I may recover my strength before I go hence and be no more seen. [From Psalm 39] The Solemn Collects (congregation standing) Dear People of God: Our heavenly Father sent his Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved; that all who believe in him might be delivered from the power of sin and death, and become heirs with him of everlasting life. We pray, therefore, for people everywhere according to their needs. The congregation kneels. Let us pray for the holy Catholic Church of Christ throughout the world; For its unity in witness and service For all bishops and other ministers and the people whom they serve For Leo, our Bishop, for Peter, our Bishop Coadjutor-Elect, and all the people of this diocese For all Christians in this community For those about to be baptized, particularly Kaylee, Liam, Michael, Kristina, and Ryder That God will confirm his Church in faith, increase it in love, and preserve it in peace. Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of your faithful people is governed and sanctified: Receive our supplications and prayers which we offer before you for all members of your holy Church, that in their vocation and ministry they may truly and devoutly serve you; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. Let us pray for all nations and peoples of the earth, and for those in authority among them; 3

For Barack, the President of the United States For the Congress and the Supreme Court For the Members and Representatives of the United Nations For all who serve the common good That by God s help they may seek justice and truth, and live in peace and concord. Almighty God, kindle, we pray, in every heart the true love of peace, and guide with your wisdom those who take counsel for the nations of the earth; that in tranquillity your dominion may increase, until the earth is filled with the knowledge of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Let us pray for all who suffer and are afflicted in body or in mind; For the hungry and the homeless, the destitute and the oppressed For the sick, the wounded, and the crippled For those in loneliness, fear, and anguish For those who face temptation, doubt, and despair For the sorrowful and bereaved For prisoners and captives, and those in mortal danger That God in his mercy will comfort and relieve them, and grant them the knowledge of his love, and stir up in us the will and patience to minister to their needs. Gracious God, the comfort of all who sorrow, the strength of all who suffer: Let the cry of those in misery and need come to you, that they may find your mercy present with them in all their afflictions; and give us, we pray, the strength to serve them for the sake of him who suffered for us, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Let us pray for all who have not received the Gospel of Christ; For those who have never heard the word of salvation For those who have lost their faith For those hardened by sin or indifference For the contemptuous and the scornful For those who are enemies of the cross of Christ and persecutors of his disciples For those who in the name of Christ have persecuted others That God will open their hearts to the truth, and lead them to faith and obedience. Merciful God, creator of all the peoples of the earth and lover of souls: Have compassion on all who do not know you as you are revealed in your Son Jesus Christ; let your Gospel be preached with grace and power to those who have not heard it; turn the hearts of those who resist it; and bring home to your fold those who have gone astray; that there may be one flock under one shepherd, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 4

Let us commit ourselves to our God, and pray for the grace of a holy life, that, with all who have departed this world and have died in the peace of Christ, and those whose faith is known to God alone, we may be accounted worthy to enter into the fullness of the joy of our Lord, and receive the crown of life in the day of resurrection. O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquillity the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The congregation stands. Those wishing to enter or leave the service may do so during this hymn. Hymn 164 Alone Thou Goest Forth, O Lord Bangor Lesson Mark 15:34 Meditation The Rev. Jeffrey S. St. John Eye Hospital, Jerusalem The contributions received at Good Friday services throughout the Episcopal Church have traditionally been sent to the Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East. The St. John Eye Hospital, which was first established in Jerusalem in 1882, is situated some two miles north of the old city of Jerusalem in what is known as the Occupied Territory of the West Bank. The order and its Hospital are totally dependent on the good will and voluntary support of individuals, corporations and foundations whose philanthropic concern is for the charitable care of the sick and needy. Furthermore, the support of this worthy effort in itself virtually grows into a great non-sectarian and humanitarian peace initiative, so profoundly needed today, in any troubled part of the world. Each year some 50,000 outpatients are given treatment, and nearly 5,000 major sight-saving or sight-restoring operations are carried out in the Hospital. The patients who come to the St. John Eye Hospital are served by an international team of surgeons and full time indigenous staff of more than 100 who manage an out-patient clinic, two operating theaters, an 82 bed hospital and a graduate training school for ophthalmic nurses. Outreach teams of doctors and nurses motor by van to West Bank villages and the Gaza Strip in order to treat patients who are unable to travel to Jerusalem. It is partly as a result of this that the number of patients attending the Hospital in Jerusalem has continued to rise steadily in recent years; some of this increase is due to sight-impaired people, who had given up hope of ever seeing properly again, being discovered by outreach visits and given proper treatment. 11
