WELCOME! Whether you come as a member of the Church of Ireland, an Anglican - Episcopalian from abroad, as a member of another Christian tradition, or from another faith background we greet you in the name of the Lord. Christian worship has been offered on this site for nearly one thousand years. Your prayers today are added to those of countless generations of Christ s people. We hope that you will know the presence and peace of God as we gather for worship today. Our scripture readings are appointed according to the ecumenical lectionary in use in the Church of Ireland. You are invited to join in saying the responses printed in bold and in the singing of the hymns. At any point in the service, those who find it difficult to stand should feel free to sit. We depend entirely on voluntary contributions for the upkeep of the cathedral. Like any other building of its age the annual running costs amount to nearly two million euro. In the light of this may we invite you to be generous in your giving at the offertory collection. You may avail of our weekly envelope scheme through Mr Desmond Campbell who can be contacted at: desmondecampbell@yahoo.co.uk.

The Gathering of God s People Please stand for the procession of choir and clergy and for the singing of the hymn Processional Hymn Thou whose almighty word Chaos and darkness heard, And took their flight; Hear us, we humbly pray, And where the gospel-day Sheds not its glorious ray, Let there be light. Thou, who didst come to bring, On thy redeeming wing Healing and sight, Health to the sick in mind, Sight to the inly blind, O now to all mankind Let there be light. Spirit of truth and love, Life-giving, holy Dove, Speed forth thy flight; Move o er the waters face, Bearing the lamp of grace, And in earth s darkest place Let there be light. Blessed and holy Three, Glorious Trinity, Wisdom, Love, Might; Boundless as ocean s tide Rolling in fullest pride, Through the world, far and wide Let there be light. Tune: Moscow Adapted from Felice de Giardini (1716 96) John Marriott (1780 1825) The Greeting In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all and also with you. The Call to Penitence St Paul says 'Be imitators of God; love as Christ loved; do not grieve the Holy Spirit; put away all anger and bitterness, all slander and malice.' So let us confess our sins to God who forgives us in Christ. Kyrie (sung by the choir) Kyrie eleison; Christe eleison; Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy. The priest pronounces the Absolution: Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy on you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gloria (sung by the choir) Gloria in excelsis Deo, et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. Laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. We give thanks to thee for thy great glory, Domine Deus, Rex coelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. Domine Fili unigenite, Jesu Christe. O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris. O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, Qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. Quoniam tu solus sanctus, tu solus Dominus, tu solus altissimus, For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, Jesu Christe, cum sancto Spiritu in gloria Dei Patris. Amen. With the Holy Spirit art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The Collect of the Day God, the strength of all those who put their trust in you: Mercifully accept our prayers and, because through the weakness of our mortal nature we can do no good thing without you, grant us the help of your grace, that in the keeping of your commandments we may please you, both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Please sit Proclaiming and Receiving the Word The First Reading Deuteronomy 5:12-15 A reading from the book of Deuteronomy: The Lord says this: Observe the sabbath day and keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. For six days you shall labour and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work you, or your son or your daughter, or your male or female slave, or your ox or your donkey, or any of your livestock, or the resident alien in your towns, so that your male and female slave may rest as well as

you. Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the sabbath day. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Psalm Psalm 81: 1 10 Sing we merrily unto God our strength: make a cheerful noise unto the God of Jacob. Take the psalm bring hither the tabret: the merry harp with the lute. Blow up the trumpet in the new moon: even in the time appointed, and upon our solemn feast-day. For this was made a statute for Israel: and a law of the God of Jacob. This he ordained in Joseph for a testimony: when he came out of the land of Egypt, and had heard a strange language. I eased his shoulder from the burden: and his hands were delivered from making the pots. Thou calledst upon me in troubles and I delivered thee: and heard thee what time as the storm fell upon thee. I proved thee also at the waters of strife: saying Hear O my people and I will assure thee, O Israel if thou wilt hearken unto me, There shall no strange god be in thee: neither shalt thou worship any other god. The Second Reading 2 Corinthians 4:5-12 A reading from the second letter of Paul to the Corinthians: We do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus sake. For it is the God who said, Let light shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. For while we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus sake, so that the life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation Please stand for the Gospel Procession as the Acclamation is sung by the choir

The Gospel Reading Mark 2: 23-3: 6 Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Mark: Response All turn to face the reader One sabbath Jesus was going through the cornfields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath? And he said to them, Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? He entered the house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and he gave some to his companions. Then he said to them, The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath; so the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath. Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there who had a withered hand. They watched him to see whether he would cure him on the sabbath, so that they might accuse him. And he said to the man who had the withered hand, Come forward. Then he said to them, Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the sabbath, to save life or to kill? But they were silent. He looked around at them with anger; he was grieved at their hardness of heart and said to the man, Stretch out your hand. He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately conspired with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him. This is the gospel of the Lord. Response The Sermon

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. please stand We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified; who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy, catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Merciful Father accept these our prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. All sit or kneel

please stand The Peace The priest introduces the peace with these words Blessed are the peacemakers: they shall be called children of God. We meet in the name of Christ and share his peace. cf Matthew 5.19 The priest says The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. Those present may offer one another a sign of peace. During the singing of the offertory hymn a collection is taken for the upkeep of the cathedral and for the support of cathedral charities. Twenty percent of all collections is given to charities in Ireland and throughout the world. Celebrating at the Lord s Table Offertory Hymn Alleluya! Sing to Jesus! His the sceptre, his the throne; Alleluya! His the triumph, His the victory alone: Hark, the songs of holy Zion Thunder like a mighty flood; Jesus, out of every nation, Hath redeemed us by his Blood. Alleluya! Not as orphans Are we left in sorrow now; Alleluya! He is near us, Faith believes, nor questions how: Though the cloud from sight received him When the forty days were o'er, Shall our hearts forget his promise, 'I am with you evermore'? Alleluya! Bread of heaven, Thou on earth our food, our stay; Alleluya! Here the sinful Flee to thee from day to day: Intercessor, Friend of sinners, Earth's Redeemer, plead for me, Where the songs of all the sinless Sweep across the crystal sea. Alleluya, King eternal, Thee the Lord of lords we own; Alleluya, born of Mary, Earth thy footstool, heaven thy throne: Thou within the veil hast entered, Robed in flesh, our great High Priest; Thou on earth both Priest and Victim In the Eucharistic Feast. Tune: Hyfrydol melody by Richard Huw Pritchard (1811 1887) W. Chatterton Dix (1837 1898)

The Preparation of the Altar at the taking of the bread and wine the priest says Be present, be present, Lord Jesus Christ our risen high priest; make yourself known in the breaking of bread. Amen. The Taking of the Bread and Wine the priest says Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us: therefore let us celebrate the feast. The Lord be with you. and also with you Lift up your hearts. we lift them to the Lord The Great Thanksgiving Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. it is right to give our thanks and praise. Father, almighty and everliving God, at all times and in all places it is right to give you thanks and praise: And so with all your people, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying: The choir sings Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed are you, Father, the creator and sustainer of all things; you made us in your own image, male and female you created us; even when we turned away from you, you never ceased to care for us, but in your love and mercy you freed us from the slavery of sin, giving your only begotten Son to become man and suffer death on the cross to redeem us: he made there the one complete and all-sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world: All remain standing

he instituted, and in his holy Gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of his precious death until he comes again. On the night that he was betrayed he took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks to you, he gave it to them, saying, Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. The choir sings and all repeat each line Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and as we eat and drink these holy gifts, grant by the power of the life-giving Spirit that we may be made one in your holy Church and partakers of the body and blood of your Son, that he may dwell in us and we in him: Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, Almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lord s Prayer As our Saviour taught us we are bold to say Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The priest breaks the consecrated bread for communion and says The bread which we break is a sharing in the body of Christ. We being many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The Communion Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God, who has taken away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed. Please sit while the choir sings Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace. Guided by the vergers, the people come forward to receive communion. Wherever you are from and whatever you believe you are welcome to receive at the table of the Lord. There are gluten-free hosts available for those with a gluten intolerance. Please indicate this to the priest.

The Communion Hymn Just as I am, without one plea But that thy blood was shed for me, And that thou bidd st me come to thee, O Lamb of God, I come. Just as I am, though tossed about With many a conflict, many a doubt, Fightings within, and fears without, O Lamb of God, I come. Just as I am, of that free love The breadth, length, depth and height to prove, Here for a season, then above, O Lamb of God, I come. Tune: Saffron Walden Arthur Henry Brown (1830 1926) Charlotte Elliott (1789 1871) Communion Motet O Saviour of the world, who by thy Cross and thy precious Blood hast redeemed us, save us and help us, we humbly beseech thee, O Lord. Herbert Howells (1892-1983) Antiphon for matins on the feast of the Exultation of the Cross The Great Silence The silence is broken by the post-communion prayer.

Going Out as God s People Prayer after Communion Eternal Father, we thank you for nourishing us with these heavenly gifts. May our communion strengthen us in faith, build us up in hope, and make us grow in love; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Father of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. All say: May we who share Christ s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Postcommunion Hymn This is the day the Lord hath made, He calls the hours his own; Let heaven rejoice, let earth be glad, And praise surround his throne. Today he rose and left the dead, And Satan s empire fell; Today the saints his triumphs spread, And all his wonders tell. Blest be the Lord who came to men, With heavenly truth and grace, Who came in God his Father s name, To save a sinful race. Tune: Billing R.R. Terry (1865 1938) Isaac Watts (1674 1748)

The Blessing & Dismissal The priest blesses the people with these words The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be with you and remain with you always. Amen. The priest or the deacon says or sings Go in peace to love and serve the Lord The choir and the people sing Please stand for the procession of choir and clergy and sit for the Organ Voluntary which concludes the service The Friends of the Cathedral are pleased to invite members of the congregation to tea and coffee in the crypt after the service.
