Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. (1 John 4:7-11) ere is a question for us to consider: What do Valentines Day, the Transfiguration of Jesus and Lent have in common? (You are thinking...) Yes! Exactly this; they all have to do with events occurring in February. Well, that is one possibility. Another way to link these three occasions together may be better summarized in a word LOVE. That is right; each relates to us a message of love. How? I am glad you asked. We will state the obvious one first Valentine s Day. This day is all about love; and every card maker, candy producer and stuffed animal seamstress is counting on you to remember this fact. They are hoping that you will remember your sweetheart, classmate or family member; and remember them well! We will agree that Valentine s Day is an easy one. So, what about the other two occasions? Transfiguration (Sunday, February 11 this year) is a time when we can observe the life of Jesus and His decision to continue His cross-walk toward Jerusalem. From a mountain top experience to the reality of continued needs being met on the roadways, Jesus reveals His motive in coming to earth; mainly His love for the world. It is hard to read about Jesus in the Scriptures and fail to understand His desire to offer everyone His compassion and love. God is love; Jesus is God; Jesus is love. As we continue to walk in faith in these days, let us also receive His love for us in the midst of our need. So, Transfiguration can help us see the result of Jesus coming; namely, His desire to love us. Now, we come to Lent. The season of Lent is 40 days; beginning on February 14, this year. Yes, Valentines Day. Pretty cool isn t it? During this time, the Church is called into a special time of reflection, repentance and renewal. During these days, you and I are invited to consider the love of a living God; who has given His best so that we can become our best. However, for me, Lent is more than that. This is also a time when we can reflect on how we love one another. So, how am I doing? How are you doing? Is our love for one another evident of our understanding of God s love for us? I truly hope so for His sake.

WelCome NeW members CheW report November & december 2017 FCC joyously welcomes Jeff & Carol Britt to the life of our church. They joined our church family on Sunday, January 14. Please be sure to welcome them. You may send a welcome note to: 108 Luke Lane, Richlands, NC 28574. The CHEW Program volunteers packed and distributed 650 bags for the weekends of November and December to children with food insecurity. We also provided 30 Thanksgiving and 30 Christmas boxes for the holidays. Thank you to the 45 plus volunteers who have helped with the packing and the businesses, churches and individuals for their continued support through donations of food and money that enables us to continue serving these children. In the words of Mother Teresa, If you can t feed 100, feed just one. First Christian Church continues to collect packages of oatmeal and grits for the children in the Richlands School District. We have collected close to 4,000 packets thus far. Our goal is 8,000 and will assure our school children of healthy eating on the weekends. Thank you for your continued generosity! ChristiAN WomeN s FelloWshiP NeWs Mary Ann Metts, Secretary On Tuesday night, Jan. 9 th, our CWF met at 7 pm with ten members present. After sharing our prayer concerns and praises, Tammy offered our opening prayer. After the opening prayer, Rosolyn gave the devotion titled Redefining Beauty taken from The Secret Place. It reminded us that we need to look at the inside (the heart) of others, not the outside. We need to look at others as Jesus looks at us. Scripture was taken from I Peter 1:24. For old business, feeding the homeless shelter in Jacksonville, Shirley will be checking on this and will have a date at our next meeting. Our new business was making plans for events and fundraisers for this new year, 2018, such as a movie, craft fair, luncheon. We will be scheduling these events on Sat., Jan. 20 th at our planning meeting. For our Christmas box offering, we took in $17 which is also our beginning balance. This was reported by Brenda Pike. After our CWF Treasurer, Brenda Huffman gave us a report, we decided on our service projects. We agreed to continue giving $40 to Worship and Wonder monthly to help with refreshments. We also agreed to give a monetary gift to a church member. February 13 th is our next scheduled meeting with Shirley as hostess. All ladies are challenged to start your new year off by attending our meetings. We meet once a month, normally on the 2 nd Tuesday. We welcome any new ideas. After delicious refreshments were served by Rosolyn Jones, Mary Ann closed our meeting with prayer. CWF movie scheduled The Christian Women s Fellowship scheduled an afternoon movie on Sunday, February 25 at 2:30 p.m. Watch your bulletin for additional information. ChristiAN men s FelloWshiP NeWs Ben Black, CMF President Our January meeting was held on the 2 nd with 8 men in attendance. Dennis Jones brought us our devotion, and Ray Randall brought us a delicious Snack, thanks to both of them. On Saturday January 20 th, we had our monthly birthday breakfast at Angie s Restaurant in Jacksonville, with 15 men present. We celebrated the birthdays of: Joe Stroud, Lynn Maxwell, Donald Morton, Hall Metts, Stanley Bryan, Dennis Goodrode, Bob James, Braxton Taylor, Kent Fletcher, John Anderson, and Steve Marshburn. Happy Birthday to all our men who are another day older, and another year wiser. Those birthday men who could not make it, we also held them up and wished them a happy birthday, even if they had other commitments, or chose to be elsewhere. Our February Birthday Breakfast will be on the 17 th, at 7:30 am. We will be celebrating the birthdays of: Ted Stamey, Jason Lester, Billy Jones, Jose Cabera, Doug Nikkel and Jeremy Holley. And, if I have missed anyone I do apologize because I do want to wish each and every one of you a very happy birthday and more to come. Please come on out to Angie s Restaurant on the third Saturday of each month at 7:30 a.m., (we start gathering shortly after 7:00 a.m.) and enjoy the fellowship and a FREE BREAKFAST (for your Birthday). By the time you are reading this we will have had our Soup and Sandwich on the 28 th of January. A special thank you to all who provided soup, sandwiches or desserts, and especially to all who came to eat and fellowship during our last soup and sandwich sit down. We hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. Now please allow me to take a moment to remind all our men that Valentine s day is just around the corner, don t be the one who is running to the drug store or the 7-day store for a rose or a $.50 card on the eve or worse, on the 14 th on our way home from work. She deserves much more than that. She may not want chocolate s, or may not be able to tolerate the sweet aroma of roses. But if you have been with her for a while, you will know some of her likes and dislikes. She may only want a nice card, a hug and/or for you to just tell her how much you love her and to thank her for all she has done for you, past present and future. Our February meeting is February 5 at 7:00 p.m. Pastor Bill Pollack will bring us our devotion and Dennis Jones will bring the snack. Please keep these dates on your calendar and make plans to attend. Chalice News Page 3 February 2018
