Service of Worship Ninth Sunday after Pentecost July 29, 2012 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Christian faith proclaims the radical notion that the God of all creation also cares for every individual. Today s Psalm opens with words of praise, proclaiming that all creation shall give glory to God and speak to God s power and might. In the letter to the church in Ephesus, Paul prays that the church may know both the scope of God s love and power over creation as well as the intimate care and attention to the details of our lives. The gospel lesson in John reveals this breadth of attention with the miracle of the feeding of the 5000. Jesus sets his heart not just on spiritual well-being, but also on physical wellbeing as well.

At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following the Lord s Supper, a service of prayer for healing will be held. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness, with anointing and laying on of hands. All are invited. Gathering Carillon The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. Organ Prelude Passacaglia in D Minor, BuxWV 161 Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) Greeting and Announcements *Processional Hymn 102 Now Thank We All Our God nun danket *Prayer of Confession and Words of Assurance (in unison) The minister offers words of confession in three biddings, to which the congregation responds as follows: Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. The minister speaks words of assurance. *Peace (All exchange signs and words of God s peace.) Proclamation Prayer for Illumination (in unison) Lord God, your Son left the riches of heaven and became poor for our sake: when we prosper save us from pride, when we are needy save us from despair, and give us ears to hear your word that we may continue to learn to trust in you alone; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Old Testament Lesson Psalm 145:10-18 (OT page 549 in the pew Bible) Lector: This is the word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Anthem Panis angelicus Panis angelicus fit panis hominum; dat panis coelicus figuris terminum. O res mirabilis! Manducat Dominum pauper, servus et humilis. The bread of angels Becomes the bread of mankind; The heavenly bread Gives an end to earthly forms. O wondrous thing! The poor one, the servant and the humble All partake of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. *Gradual Hymn 388 (stanzas 3-4) O Come and Dwell in Me Sermon It All Ends in Praise Response st. michael st. michael *The Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Call to Prayer Minister: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Minister: Let us pray. Therefore let us, with heads bowed, Venerate so great a sacrament, And let the old practice yield To the new rite; Let faith provide a supplement For the failure of the senses. To the begetter and the begotten Be praise and jubilation, Salvation, honor, virtue also, And blessing, And let equal praise be to him, Who proceeds from them both. Amen. Thanksgiving This morning we give thanks for the Duke Office of Admissions. We celebrate its commitment to inviting students each year from various walks of life into the community that makes up Duke. The ushers bring an admissions brochure to the altar. In Durham, we remember those who live on low income and employers who seek to offer a living wage to their employees. The ushers bring forward a wallet. *Prayer of Thanksgiving *The Lord s Prayer (number 895 in the hymnal, in unison) Sending Forth *Benediction *Recessional Hymn 368 My Hope Is Built Choral Blessing Seven-Fold Amen Postlude Springs of Salvation (1982) the solid rock John Stainer (1840-1901) Margaret Vardell Sandresky (b. 1921) Carillon *All who are able may stand. Duke Chapel Events Listserv If you would like to receive emails about upcoming events sponsored by Duke Chapel, such as concerts, talks, special worship services, and more, please visit www.chapel.duke.edu/calendar, or send an email to Kelsey Hallatt at kelsey.hallatt@duke.edu. Questions People Often Ask - Why do we confess our sins? Sin is not simply something that makes people unhappy or causes pain: it is life based on a false story, one that leads to worshiping something other than the God of Jesus Christ. However, the Christian story does not begin with sin but with God s decision to be in relationship with humanity and all creation. Thus when there is a breakdown of that relationship, by what has been done, or what has been left undone, it is a tragedy in which the congregation has participated. Repentance means naming and stripping away the things that distance the disciple from the gospel. From personal repentance the congregation moves into corporate confession. It is not just their own sin that separates them from God; sin infects the people of God as a whole. In confessing sin, we recognize that this congregation has joined, even in the past week, in the catastrophe of discarding God s everlasting invitation to worship and friendship.
