THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH APRIL 16, 2017 EASTER DAY BECOMING AWARE Isn t it curious that fear is the predominant Easter emotion? Why did the first to be encountered by a risen crucified Christ feel fear rather than joy? My theory is that the resurrection wasn t just a matter of a person being brought back from the dead. Rather, the resurrection was Jesus is back! That news caused consternation in those who knew Jesus best. ~ Will Willimon, Fear of the Other: No Fear in Love

GATHERING OPENING VOLUNTARIES Canzon Seconda Air for Trumpet Let the Bright Seraphim from SAMSON Fanfare in D Canzon Terza Giovanni Gabrieli Georg Philipp Telemann George Frideric Handel Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens G. Gabrieli THE EASTER GOSPEL & INVOCATION Matthew 28:1-10 INTROIT Christ the Lord is Risen Today Mark Schweizer The text is that of hymn 216. * CALL TO WORSHIP One: Sing alleluia, for Christ our Lord has risen. Many: Do not be afraid, said the angel to the women at the tomb. One: Sing alleluia, for death has been defeated. Many: Do not be afraid, said Jesus to his disciples. One: Sing alleluia, for God s love has triumphed over evil. Many: We sing with joy, for there is nothing that can ever separate us from the love of God. One: Christ is risen! All: Christ is risen indeed! * HYMN IN PROCESSION The Day of Resurrection! 228 ELLACOMBE * PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST Please greet one another with this ancient sign of welcome and extension of hospitality and peace. * SONG OF PRAISE Alleluia from Celtic Mass Fintan O Carroll & Christopher Walker The refrain is sung once by the cantor then by all. Following the verse, the refrain is sung by all. Refrain Verse: Now he is living the Christ, Out of the tomb he is risen; He hath conquered death, Opened heaven to all believers.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Please pass the Friendship Registers found on each row. Complete the requested information and then pass it back down the row. Thank you for worshipping with us at Binkley! AN UPDATE FROM THE MINISTER SEARCH COMMITTEE Stephanie Ford Larry McManus LISTENING A TIME WITH CHILDREN Libby Fosso & Stephanie Ford THE EPISTLE LESSON I John 4:18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love. * HYMN Alleluia see insert * THE GOSPEL LESSON Mark 16:1-8 One: This is the Gospel of Christ! Many: Thanks be to God! SERMON Easter Fear? Marcus McFaul So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. ~Mark 16:8 PRAYING & GIVING OUR KNOWN JOYS AND CONCERNS Stephanie Ford SILENT CONFESSION OF SIN God, we confess to you that while we know well the story of your victory over the grave, it is not a story we always live. We are dragged down by all manner of death Fear may suffocate us: the loss of dreams and hopes for ourselves, our families, our communities and our nation. Sorrow may wall us off like a grave, isolating us with anger, frustration, and grief. Yet the smooth stones of our faith are inscribed not with the marks of death, but with the word, Alleluia! So on this Easter morning, we pray that you will fill us with fear and great joy so that, like those women who came to the tomb expecting death, we may instead find the radiant new life that is ever before us in your resurrection!

ASSURANCE OF PARDON One: Just as Christ did not come to condemn but to liberate, so too is Christ raised from death not to judge but to celebrate. Cast off the yoke of sorrow and instead raise up the scepter of Joy Christ lives! We live! Many: All is made new on this resurrection morning! Alleluia and amen! THE MORNING PRAYER A WORD FROM THE WORLD RECOGNITION OF BARBARA & GOVE ELDER Faith Connections on Mental Illness Kimberly Brewer, CROP Walk Caryl Fulcher SENTENCES OF STEWARDSHIP We are witnesses to the power of the Holy Spirit and the glory of God, and now we turn in thanksgiving to share the good news of forgiveness and grace to all the world. Let these our gifts be a living testimony to those who most need the healing grace of Christ this morning, cornerstones of faith and joy for the entire world. OFFERTORY Anthem for Spring from Cavalleria Rusticana Pietro Mascagni Praise the Lord, who hath brought us a new life, who hath ruled that the world be reborn, who hath banished the dark with His goodness and transfigured the sun in a glorious morn! Praise the Lord, breathing life through all Nature, that the hills and the valleys rejoice, that the trees and the flowers burst with gladness, wakening wintry hearts to live again. For the Lord is the Giver of Life to all, fixing the stars in the sky, building the firmament high, that no mortal shall die. Every year, in the dawning of springtime, from the Lord comes a message of hope and joy evermore! And the world is reborn. For the Lord is Giver of Life unto all that do hark to His call, the call that echoes to every living thing great or small: Live again, through the Giver of Life, hear the voice of the Lord who hath given new life to all. Praise the Lord from whose countless blessings fall; for all the earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof. Lift up your voices, all creatures on earth and with gladness proclaim that God is Love. Joyfully sing God is Love! Alleluia! For the Lord giveth life, Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord of Life! * DOXOLOGY Please sign with the leader or simply sing. LASST UNS ERFREUEN Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below, Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Creator, Christ, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! COMMITTING & SENDING * PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING * AN INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP Christ is Alive! YOU ARE INVITED TO. WEDNESDAY NIGHT SERIES Apr. 19, 5:30 pm, Lounge: On Wednesday Nights, post-easter, a new series begins: "Perspectives on Justice." The Race, Power and Christian Discipleship class desires to share its conversations and commitments with the larger Binkley community, and is sponsoring this series of dialogues with African American members of our congregation. Come, taste, and see the work and joy of movement toward more just relationships. Tammerie Day will facilitate our first conversation on April 19. Check Event in the Friendship Register or make a reservation by noon on Tuesday if you plan to attend. Dinner is $6 for adults, $3 for children. CARE FOR YOURSELF: From the Health Committee: April 19th is National Health Care Decisions Day. This is a great time to be certain that your health care power of attorney and durable power of attorney are up to date and that you have indicated your end of life desires on the state s MOST form (completed with your primary care provider). REGISTER FOR THE WOMEN S RETREAT: April 23 is the deadline to register for the May 5-7 Women s Retreat at Trinity Center in Salter Path. We will focus on the Divine Feminine. This is your year to go! Registration forms available at Stephanie Ford s door. LAST PUSH TO MEET GOAL FOR APRIL 23 CROP WALK: We have raised $2,635 of our $6,600 goal to help fight hunger. And the CROP Hunger Walk is only a week away! Binkley CROP Walk Hunger Fighters that have joined the team to date include Sherri Davis, Tammerie Day, Marcus McFaul, Margie Billinger, Stephanie Ford, Avery Jenkins, Sheryl Scrimsher, Linda Textoris, April Harper, Nan Pardington, and Kimberly Brewer. AMANDA TYLER VISITS BINKLEY Apr. 30: Amanda, Executive Director of the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty (profiled in February s Beacon), will be at the Alliance of Baptists meeting that weekend and has agreed to visit Binkley on Sunday, April 30. She will deliver the sermon during 11:00 worship and will also join us for a Lunch & Learn following worship in the Lounge. Please take this opportunity to meet Amanda in person and learn how the BJC is reacting to the many challenges posed by the current political climate in Washington. Lunch is $5, please make a reservation at the office by noon on 4/27, if you plan to attend. PLEA FOR PARKING LOT COMPASSION: It's wonderful that our parking lot is full on Sunday morning! Yet it creates a concern for many people who have difficulty walking. The spaces directly in front of the sanctuary entrance will be renovated this year to include more access for those with mobility challenges. Until then, if you have the great blessing of energy and ability to walk, please park further away from the entrance and save those spaces for those who need them most. Your understanding and compassion will be most appreciated. OUR WIDER COMMUNITY ALLIANCE OF BAPTISTS 30TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION AND ANNUAL GATHERING, Apr. 27-30: Over four days in April, the Alliance of Baptists will convene in Raleigh to discuss why we have hope in what Baptists can offer the world and to celebrate the good work of the Alliance in the world, while embracing, ever more deeply, the challenging work of justice and love ahead of us. Rev. William Barber is among many exciting and inspiring speakers on the schedule. See flyer in the narthex for more information. If you can help with supplying homemade cookies for the event, please sign up outside Stephanie Ford s door.

YOU'RE INVITED: ENJOY A SEASON OF FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES THROUGH THE HARVESTSHARE PROGRAM! What is it? An abundant box of fresh, sustainably-grown fruits and vegetables from Anathoth Community Garden & Farm, grown in Cedar Grove, distributed on a sliding scale, and all for a mission to cultivate peace. Where and when can I find the produce boxes? We deliver weekly (Wednesdays 5-8 p.m.) to Binkley. Deliveries begin April 26. How do I join? You can purchase a produce box for the season for your own household, or contribute towards another household that needs the support -- or both! Our vision is for everyone to pitch in what they are able, while sharing as equals in the gift of good food. To sign up, contact Julia Sendor (336-524-7985 or anathothgarden@gmail.com) or visit our website at anathothgarden.org.
