The Revelation of God PSALM 19

I take this to be the greatest poem in the Psalter and one of the greatest lyrics in the world. C.S. Lewis

I think he felt, effortlessly and without reflecting on it, so close a connection, indeed such an identity between his first theme and

his second that he passed from the one to the other without realizing that he made any transition. C.S. Lewis

THE CONNECTION: God is revealing Himself and His purposes to all humanity.

How is God revealing Himself and His purposes to all humanity?

1. Through His World

PSALM 19:1 1 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the expanse proclaims the work of his hands.

1,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000

PRINCIPLE: Something that is created has a creator.

TWO ASPECTS OF GOD S REVELATION THROUGH THE WORLD: a. Through the world God s revelation is constant.

PSALM 19:2 2 Day after day they pour out speech; night after night they communicate knowledge.

"Though all preachers on earth should grow silent, and every human mouth cease from publishing the glory of God, the heavens above will never cease to declare and proclaim his majesty and glory.

They are for ever preaching; for, like an unbroken chain, their message is delivered from day to day and from night to night." Spurgeon

PSALM 19:3 3 There is no speech; there are no words; their voice is not heard.

TWO ASPECTS OF GOD S REVELATION THROUGH THE WORLD: b. Through the world God s revelation is comprehensive.

PSALM 19:4 4 Their message has gone out to the whole earth, and their words to the ends of the world.

PSALM 19:4-6 4 In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun.

PSALM 19:4-6 5 It is like a bridegroom coming from his home; it rejoices like an athlete running a course.

PSALM 19:4-6 6 It rises from one end of the heavens and circles to their other end; nothing is hidden from its heat.

PSALM 19:6 6 It rises from one end of the heavens and circles to their other end; nothing is hidden from its heat.

ROMANS 1:18-20 18 For God's wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth,

ROMANS 1:18-20 19 since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them.

ROMANS 1:18-20 20 For his invisible attributes, that is, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what he has made. As a result, people are without excuse.

2. Through His Word

DAVID S DESCRIPTION OF GOD S WORD: a. Instruction, perfect, renewing our life.

PSALM 19:7 7 The instruction of the Lord is perfect, renewing one's life.

2 PETER 1:3 3 His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.

ROMANS 12:2 2 Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

DAVID S DESCRIPTION OF GOD S WORD: b. Testimony, trustworthy, making us wise.

PSALM 19:7 7 The testimony of the Lord is trustworthy, making the inexperienced wise.

1 JOHN 5:9 9 If we accept human testimony, God's testimony is greater, because it is God's testimony that he has given about his Son.

DAVID S DESCRIPTION OF GOD S WORD: c. Precepts, right, giving us joy.

PSALM 19:8 8 The precepts of the Lord are right, making the heart glad.

PSALM 119:1-6 1 How happy are those whose way is blameless, who walk according to the Lord's instruction!

PSALM 119:1-6 2 Happy are those who keep his decrees and seek him with all their heart.

PSALM 119:1-6 3 They do nothing wrong; they walk in his ways.

PSALM 119:1-6 4 You have commanded that your precepts be diligently kept.

PSALM 119:1-6 5 If only my ways were committed to keeping your statutes!

PSALM 119:1-6 6 Then I would not be ashamed when I think about all your commands.

JOHN 15:11 11 I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.

DAVID S DESCRIPTION OF GOD S WORD: d. Command, radiant, enlightening us.

PSALM 19:8 8 The command of the Lord is radiant, making the eyes light up.

HABAKKUK 1:13 13 Your eyes are too pure to look on evil, and you cannot tolerate wrongdoing.

PSALM 119:105 105 Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.

DAVID S DESCRIPTION OF GOD S WORD: e. Fear of the Lord, pure, enduring forever.

PSALM 19:9 9 The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever.

1 PETER 1:24-25 24 For All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like a flower of the grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls,

1 PETER 1:24-25 25 but the word of the Lord endures forever. And this word is the gospel that was proclaimed to you.

DAVID S DESCRIPTION OF GOD S WORD: f. Ordinances, reliable, righteous.

PSALM 19:9 9 The ordinances of the Lord are reliable and altogether righteous.

David s attitude toward the Word:

PSALM 19:10-11 10 They are more desirable than gold than an abundance of pure gold; and sweeter than honey dripping from a honeycomb.

PSALM 19:10-11 11 In addition, your servant is warned by them, and in keeping them there is an abundant reward.

WHAT GOD S WORD DOES UNLIKE WEALTH OR PLEASURE: 1. It warns you.

1 TIMOTHY 6:3-11 3 If anyone teaches false doctrine and does not agree with the sound teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ and with the teaching that promotes godliness,

1 TIMOTHY 6:3-11 4 he is conceited and understands nothing, but has an unhealthy interest in disputes and arguments over words. From these come envy, quarreling, slander, evil suspicions,

1 TIMOTHY 6:3-11 5 and constant disagreement among people whose minds are depraved and deprived of the truth, who imagine that godliness is a way to material gain.

1 TIMOTHY 6:3-11 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.

1 TIMOTHY 6:3-11 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out.

1 TIMOTHY 6:3-11 8 If we have food and clothing, we will be content with these.

1 TIMOTHY 6:3-11 9 But those who want to be rich fall into temptation, a trap, and many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge people into ruin and destruction.

1 TIMOTHY 6:3-11 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and by craving it, some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

1 TIMOTHY 6:3-11 11 But you, man of God, flee from these things, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness.

WHAT GOD S WORD DOES UNLIKE WEALTH OR PLEASURE: 1. It warns you. 2. It rewards you.

PSALM 19:11 11 In addition, your servant is warned by them, and in keeping them there is an abundant reward.

"A quiet conscience is a little heaven. A martyr was fastened to the stake, and the sheriff who was to execute him expressed his sorrow that he should persevere in his opinions, and compel him to set fire to the pile.

The martyr answered, 'Do not trouble yourself, for I am not troubling myself. Come and lay your hand upon my heart, and see if it does not beat quietly.' His request was complied with, and he was found to be quite: calm.

'Now,' said he, 'lay your hand on your own heart, and see if you are not more troubled than I am; and then go your way, and, instead of pitying me, pity yourself.' Spurgeon

JOHN 14:21 21 The one who has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. And the one who loves me will be loved by my Father. I also will love him and will reveal myself to him.

JOHN 14:23 23 Jesus answered, "If anyone loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

JOHN 1:1 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

JOHN 1:14 14 The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

What attitude should we have toward the Word of God?

ATTITUDE: The Word of God is to be more desired and is of greater value than riches or experiences.

What is David s response toward the revelation of God through His world and His word?

THREE RESPONSES: 1. A prayer for cleansing.

PSALM 19:12 12 Who perceives his unintentional sins? Cleanse me from my hidden faults.

HEBREWS 4:12 12 For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any doubleedged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

"From those which I have committed, and have forgotten; from those for which I have not repented; from those which have been committed in my heart, but have not been brought to act in my life; from those which I have committed without knowing that they were sins,

sins of ignorance; and from those which I have committed in private, for which I should blush and be confounded were they to be made public." Clarke

PSALM 19:12 12 Cleanse me from my hidden faults.

THREE RESPONSES: 1. A prayer for cleansing. 2. A prayer to be kept from sin.

PSALM 19:13 13 Moreover, keep your servant from willful sins; do not let them rule me. Then I will be blameless and cleansed from blatant rebellion.

THREE RESPONSES: 1. A prayer for cleansing. 2. A prayer to be kept from sin. 3. A prayer of acceptance.

PSALM 19:14 14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.

ROMANS 12:1 1 Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship.

APPLICATION 1. Take time to view the created world around you.

APPLICATION 2. Treasure the Word of God.
