Knights of Columbus Cd913.org Issue No. 9 MAY 2017 2017 Greetings From the Navigator My Brother Sir Knights, Genealogy: Mother s side back to 1181 Dutch French Father s side back to 1574 Italian Happy Easter! I hope you and your loved ones experience the joy and hope that the season of Easter brings! On April 18, I attended the Villanova U.S.N. R.O.T.C. Spring Review. While there I made a presentation to this year s recipient, Midshipman 3/C Peter Herlihey. Our Awards Chairman, SK Hassel Mitchell, usually attends and makes this presentation, but I substituted for him since he was invited to make the same presentation at St. Joseph University s U.S.A.F. R.O.T.C Spring Review at the same time. The ceremony included historical pomp and circumstance and a 30-year reunion from the class of 1987. It was quite a moving experience to see these young men and women drill and march before the crowd gathered to honor them. Having the 1 opportunity to make this 30 plus year traditional presentation on behalf of our assembly was quite an honor. A 1987 recipient of the award told me the Knights of Columbus Award from the Assembly was one of the most prestigious awards given back in 1987. At that time, the award included a sword. Today, there are several awards given for various accomplishments among the young men and women. The Cardinal Dougherty Assembly Award is still regarded as a very prestigious award. I wish more of you could have witnessed the review as it once again inspired a feeling of pride and honor to not only be a member of the Knights of Columbus, but to reinforce the meaning of the Patriotic Degree. These young men and women are the peace-keepers and stability of our future. On another note, the Assembly will hold its elections on May 3. Please look for the nominations listed elsewhere in this newsletter to see who has
been nominated for each officer s position thus far. If anyone else wishes to hold an office, please contact one of the officers via email or phone before 7:30 PM Wednesday, May 3 so that you may be added to the ballot. As mentioned in the last newsletter, we are introducing an in-house charity to support our fellow Knights of this assembly when times are tough. We will be looking at how we can support each other within the assembly when a member falls upon challenging times. We wish to be aggressive with this planning so we can hold an initial fund raising event this fall. We will need volunteers in various areas to make this type of assistance available. If you have fund raising suggestions (especially if you have experience putting one together), please step forward to assist. It does not mean you will be asked to run a program or event. At this time we are in need of ideas and ways to make our goal a reality. All talk and no action does not produce results for those in need. Sometimes it is hard to imagine that this assembly has over 900 members. Please help us help each other. We will be designing a means to which you can donate monies to the project in lieu of any physical assistance, I thank you in advance for your interest and suggestions. The 4 th Degree exemplification is planned at the end of this month on the 28th. We will be remembering World War One and our country s 100 th anniversary of entering The Great War. We will have pictures and posters as well as other artifacts on display at the Exemplification to help promote the Patriotic Degree to our newest members. Hopefully, our new Knights will become enthusiastic, active participants at future events sponsored by the Knights. If you have any items, such as photos or letters from WW1 to contribute, please contact me at: npizzano@hotmail.com with the subject line: KofC World War 1 Displays. All items will be acknowledged and returned after the weekend. I also encourage you to reach out to the members of your council who are potential 4 th Degree candidates and encourage them to attend. Support you candidates by attending with them. The more support they have, the more likely they will become the next generation of Assembly Knights to help continue running this great organization. They are looking for you to be a part of their Rope as demonstrated in our 2 nd Degree. Your support will be significant in their participation with the Knights. I welcome everyone to join me at our next Conclave meeting on May 3. Vivat Jesus, Neal Pizzano Faithful Navigator, CDA 913 A Message from our Faithful Friar May-The Month of the Blessed Mother and our Mothers May 13th will mark the 100th anniversary of the first apparition (appearance) of the Blessed Mother to the three little shepherd children of Fatima, Portugal- Lucy dos Santos, age 10, and her cousins, Francisco, age 9, and Jacinta Marto, age 7. After Sunday Mass on May 13, 1917, the three children went to graze the sheep in the Cova da Iria, a small property in Fatima owned by Lucy s parents. After they had eaten their lunch and prayed the rosary, they began to play when they saw what seemed to be lightning and they began to run down the hill. Halfway down the hill, another flash of light appeared and it was then that a lady, all dressed in white and brilliant like the sun, appeared to the three children. Lucy then asked the lady who she was and where did she come from and the Lady said that I am of heaven and I ll tell you who I am in October. The Lady then asked that they return to the Cova on the 13th of each month through October. Through the six apparitions 2
of the Blessed Mother to the children of Fatima, Our Lady asked the following of the children-pray the rosary daily, in particular for peace and the end of WWI; promote the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary; requested that Russia be consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and that the brown scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel be worn. Pope Francis will visit Fatima on May 12th and 13th to commemorate the 100th anniversary and to canonize both Francisco and Jacinta Marto. In the Gospel of John, while Jesus was dying on the cross, He said to Mary, his Mother, Woman, behold, your son. The son Jesus was referencing was the beloved disciple (John) and Jesus in turn entrusted Mary to John with the words Behold, your mother. Literally, these words of Jesus were fulfilled in the life of Mary and John as they were to be with each other, in Ephesus (present day Turkey), until the Blessed Mother was assumed in heaven. Tradition also sees in these words of Jesus to His Mother a way by which Mary becomes the Mother of each of us-loving us, caring for us, protecting, guiding and watching over us, and interceding for us through her Son, Jesus. On reflecting on the apparition of the Blessed Mother at Fatima, it seems that the apparition is a visible sign by which Our Lady manifests her Motherhood and love toward each of us. The requests she made of the three shepherd children are ways by which she desires to guide us in our relationship with God in our lives so that we may be united with her in heaven. The same could be said of all of the apparitions of the Blessed Mother throughout the years. May is the month of Mary and it takes on a special significance this year with the 100th anniversary of the first apparition at Fatima. Finally, I would be remiss if I did not recall that Mother s Day will be celebrated on May 14th. In honoring our Mothers, whether living or dead, on this day, our love for them can be shown in a special way by offering our Mass as well as praying the rosary for them on that day. In doing so, we offer a spiritual bouquet to them and, at the same time, honor Our Mother in heaven and Our Lady of Fatima through the praying of the rosary. Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us!
