Dear Friends, Greetings to you in the name of Jesus the Christ! God s Work. Our Hands weekend will be Saturday & Sunday September 17 & 18. Once again God calls and empowers us to go out into the community to serve in Jesus name. Our ELCA Presiding Bishop Eaton put it this way: The world can be a dangerous place. But there are some who, when disaster strikes, run toward the danger. These are first responders, firefighters, police and EMTs, who live out their baptismal vocation in service to their communities in times of intense need. They do God s work with their hands. In baptism we have been marked with the cross. We are the ones who go into the broken places of the world. We are the ones who, by showing up on God s Work. Our Hands Sunday, shine the light of the cross in our communities. We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work. Whether our congregation prepares & serves meals at the N.E.W. Shelter or gather items for the Preble Hive, our service activities offer an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: that all of life in Jesus Christ every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of life flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God s grace. Paul s Pantry We always collect egg cartons, paper bags, plastic bags, twist ties and glasses for Paul s Pantry. Put your donated items in the Narthex Counter cabinet marked Paul s Pantry. The pantry was founded in 1984 by the late Leo Frigo. Leo had retired as President of Frigo Cheese and wished to devote the remainder of his life to helping those in need. Leo realized that the amount of food being thrown away by business was shameful and that the unsaleable but edible food could be used to benefit the needy in our local community. Please join us in supporting their mission by donating egg cartons, bags, ties and glasses.

Relief Crossing Guards The City of Green Bay is in need of part-time Relief Crossing Guards for the upcoming school year. Milestone Ministry We celebrate our children going to their first day of kindergarten, going to prom, getting married, having children, and so many more fun events in our lives. Why do we not celebrate the church milestones? Milestone ministry takes the milestones that we as congregation members move through and celebrates them during worship and at home! The great thing about milestone ministry is that each milestone that a person meets is gifted with a hand painted stone. These stones are a great way to remember and ritualize our faith milestones. This is not just a program for the youth in our congregation. There are milestones for all stages in your faith. We will be offering workshops through the year for everyone to participate in. It is a time for members of the community to get together for a snack and learn! Have you ever participated in an LIR (learning in retirement) program? This is very similar but all ages are welcome to participate. Every month on the last Tuesday we will get together in the fellowship hall at 11:30 a.m. to enjoy a light lunch, some coffee and hear a speaker talk about different issues. Confirmation Ministry in September 2016 Confirmation is: A pastoral & educational ministry of the church which helps the baptized child, through Word and Sacrament, to Identify more deeply with the Christian community and participate more fully in its mission. WORSHIP is an important part of our Confirmation Ministry! All youth who are in Confirmation are encouraged to join us for worship each week on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. or 11:15 a.m. RAINBOW BAGS FOR OUR CHILDREN IN CHURCH - The rainbow bags at the entry to church are filled with religious books for your children to read during worship. Please feel free to take one for your child to use and return to the rack following worship. Confirmation Youth Help Serve at N.E.W. Shelter Meals 4:45 6:00 p.m. The schedule for our confirmation Youth and/or parents to provide assistance for the N.E.W. Shelter meal is listed below. Currently, the N.E.W. Shelter is located at 301 Mather. Prior to the meal for which you are assigned, you will be contacted by the Director of Youth & Family Ministry who helps coordinate volunteers for the shelter meal. Your help is a great way to assist others, and to understand the needs some people in our community have for the basic necessities of life. According to Luther s Small Catechism, Confirmation is the rite by which a baptized person renews his/her baptismal vow, publicly addresses her/his faith, and is received into adult membership by the congregation. Baptism is our birth into God s family, it is a gift of a new life offered us by God. In Baptism parents and sponsors promise to nurture faith by participating in worship, teaching the Lord s Prayer, the Creed and the Ten Commandments; by placing into the child s hands the scriptures, and by providing instruction in the Christian Faith. The church commits to help parents and sponsors fulfill this promise. Confirmation is a time of preparation for baptized Christians to publicly profess that they do indeed believe these things promised for them in their baptism. It is a responsibility for one s own Christian Faith. To help in the fulfillment of baptismal vows, Atonement Lutheran provides a three year confirmation program. In this program, the church promises to help students & parents be responsible in preparing for the Rite of Confirmation. It is important that students and parents know what is expected of them in Atonement s Conformation Ministry, and covenant to fulfill these responsibilities and obligations. Area health care providers will have information booths set up, music will be provided along with food and refreshments. The last hour will be our Memory Bag Walk in which participants can line the Preble track with glow-stick lighted bags in memory of or in honor of someone who has fought or is fighting their battle with cancer. Students, staff, parents, and community members are invited to donate any new or like-new products that can be used to make the Hive and the Eagle s Nest respected resources for the school community. The Preble HIVE and the Edison Eagle s Nest were voted by our Congregation as one of the Top 3 Community Goals for our church in 2016. From the Social Concerns Committee: Care & Share Ministry Our Care & Share Ministry helps those recovering from an illness or surgery by preparing meals or providing household help. If anyone would like to participate in this ministry by helping to prepare a meal or help with household duties, please sign up in the narthex to help. We have a few people signed up, but have several members who are having upcoming surgeries and could use more help. If you haven't signed up, please consider helping. When admitted to the hospital, you will have to tell them to contact Atonement. Even when you tell this to the hospital, sometimes we are called and sometimes we are not. The only way to be sure we know about your hospitalization is for you or a family member to contact us directly. Without your assistance, it is very possible your hospitalization will not be known by Pastor Jim. Atonement's Prayer Chain The Prayer Chain consists of several people who are contacted via e-mail when someone has a prayer request. The request goes to all those who have signed up to receive these prayer requests. Motion carried. Pastor s Report: Currently just trying to stay above water. Tuesday was our Youth & Family event at Kastle Park. We had a great turnout, with a lot of younger families. May take time off after son s wedding in July to address some things with dad. The Mission Trip group made $800 from the Brat Sale at Festival Foods. Current balance in account is $818.40. Quake Zone event still carries a negative balance. We need to determine how to cover. Confirmation Camp has a balance due of $549. The cost per youth for the camp is $395. We asked for a $100 deposit from families. Corey made a motion to accept the Pastor s report and Sue seconded it. Motion carried. Financial Nothing concerning this month. We continue to have a negative income vs. expanse balance but we are doing better than last year. Also consider that we have added items/funds to this year s budget. Offerings were $3200 vs 4300 the previous year. Thrivent Financial Choice dollars have brought in over $5000 year to date. Julie has been splitting this between remaining quarters. This is a significant amount. There was discussion about getting more information about this out to our Thrivent members, as not all of them may be participating in these Choice Dollars when they are eligible to. PJ will see about getting a list of members that have Thrivent product. Julie said there is a document online about Choice Dollars and how to participate. $125 was sent to Lutheran Social Services for our 2 nd Quarter payment. Sue made a motion to approve the Treasurers Report and Corey seconded it. Motion carried. Old Business 1. Youth & Family - There is a possible candidate from Crossways. PJ may be able to meet with him during VBS. New Youth & Family Event Coordinator position is being worked on, with Kathy Huebner filling this position. It will be line item 504 in the budget. Discussion was held on MPS s proposed rate of pay. Council will submit a new recommendation to MPS. MPS, PJ and Kathy need to finalize the job description. If completed, a July 1 start date is the goal. 2. Summer Festival - $850 grant received for the GB Conference to help cover the cost of the festival. It will be on July 16 with a lot of food and fun. Meant to be for the entire congregation, with a picnic on Saturday with the outdoor worship on Sunday. 3. Locks in the office will be rekeyed on Monday morning. Next Meeting: Thursday, August 18. U2S Committee Updates August 28, 2016 Congregational Goals 1. Illuminate cross on east side of building Committee: Gladys Nickodem, Laura Sternitzky, Dave Haefs Julie Geyer, Duane Pike, Paul Gast, Ken Storzer, Gene Vandevoorde Committee has been meeting and has defined requirements. Bob Geyer, our electrician is working on the cost estimate. 2. Automated External Defibrillator Committee: Jason Helgeson Jason is applying for grants to help with the cost. Currently have $500 in fund. 3. Elderly Assistance No committee has been formed, however some church members have offered to drive other members to evening music events this summer i.e. Allouez Village Band. Do you know of events this fall that other members would appreciated joining you? Driving at night is what keeps some members from enjoying outings. Community Goals: 1. Preble HIVE and Edison Middle School Eagles Nest Edison Eagles Nest Committee: Mary Ann Larsen, Judy Slamp, Maryl Nelsen. Judy Slamp and Mary Ann Larsen have been granted approval to work in the Edison Eagles Nest. There is a bin in under the Narthex Counter for donated items to the Edison Eagles Nest. Preble HIVE Committee: Doris Ziesemer, Karen Fitchett, Jill Wentworth, Onnika Robishaw The Preble HIVE committee also continues to monitor the donation bin under the Narthex Counter and bring items to Preble when the bin is full. 2. Health & Wellness/Educational Seminars Committee: Darlene Gast, Paul Gast, Kathi Sikich Possible booth at Sting Cancer Event Upcoming events being planned at Atonement this fall. Suggestions welcome. 3. Random Acts of Kindness No committee formed. Status: Pastor Jim will hand out rolls of quarters on Gods Work Our Hands Sunday to some members to do random acts of kindness. World Goals: 1. Farming Hope in El Salvador Committee: Mary Ann Larsen, Janet Jacobson, Sue Pike Jamie Stark will be in Green Bay in September. He has several ideas to share with us on the many specific projects our supporting funds can go towards if we are interested in a specific project vs. general funding as we ve been doing. Thrivent News Thrivent Action Teams Thrivent Action Teams continue to make it possible for us to engage in a variety of different mission and ministries here at Atonement as we utilize a $250 seed grant from Thrivent. Any Thrivent member is able to apply for two of these action Team Grants in a calendar year. Already through the month of March, we have applied for six of these seed grants for a number of different ministries. If you are a Thrivent member and have questions about how to access these seed funds, talk with Pastor Jim or Sue Pike in the church office for some basic instructions. A big thank you to Thrivent Financial for making these funds available as we continue to expand our ministry. CONGRATULATIONS! Thrivent Choice participants have thousands of options but they chose you. Based on their recommendations, Atonement Lutheran Church received $2,724 in 2015. The Thrivent Choice program helps Thrivent members make a positive impact in their communities. Thrivent Choice Dollars-WOW! Thrivent Financial has given Atonement $1,123.00 for July on behalf of members that have directed their Choice Dollars to Atonement. Eligible members of Thrivent recommend where Thrivent Financial distributes some of its charitable outreach grant dollars among thousands of participating nonprofit organizations and congregations. Thank you to Atonement/Thrivent members! Scrip Cards When you purchase SCRIP gift cards, you can choose where 100% of those fundraised dollars go! You can choose any of the line items in the yearly Budget such as United 2 Serve, Youth, Music, Building Improvements, etc. You could also choose to have 100% of the dollars put in your family account to offset costs for mission trips, youth gatherings, etc. As always your order form and money is due by the first Sunday of the month and is to be placed in Julie Geyer's mailbox. Example: You spend 300$ a month on gas. Choose a business that gives 10% back and purchase gas cards through them. In one month you could have earned 30$ to put toward a ministry you are passionate about. If you have any questions please see Leah Bergstrom or Julie Geyer. How Do I Order? 1. Grab an order form in hanging file outside the office window. Brand sheets located there as well. 2. Fill out your locations and dollar amounts for each card. 3.
