Torah Time PARASHA Bo Exodus 10:1-13:16 Jeremiah 28:25-29:21 Romans 9:14-29 TORAH TIME The last three of the Ten Plagues come upon Egypt: a swarm of locusts eats all the crops and plants; a thick darkness covers the land; and all the firstborn of Egypt are killed at the stroke of midnight of the 15th of the month of Aviv. YHWH commands the people of Israel to establish a calendar based on the monthly rebirth of the moon. The Israelites are also told to bring a "Passover offering" to YHWH. A lamb is to be killed and its blood sprinkled on the doorposts and sides of every Hebrew home. This is done so that YHWH should pass over these homes when He comes to kill the Egyptian firstborn. The roasted meat of the offering is to be eaten that night together with matzah (unleavened bread) and bitter herbs. These are parts of the Passover Seder. The death of the firstborn finally breaks Pharaoh's hard heart. Pharaoh drives the Children of Israel from his land. They leave so quickly that there is no time for their dough to rise, and the only bread they take along is unleavened. Before they go, they ask their Egyptian neighbors for gold, silver and garments. They take a lot of wealth from Egypt. The Children of Israel are commanded to set aside all of the firstborn and to remember the anniversary of the Exodus. This is to be done each year by removing all leaven from their possession for seven days, eating matzah, and telling the story of the exodus to their children. They are also commanded to remember the Exodus and their commitment to YHWH. (This is an easy explanation of the Torah portion taken from the book The Open Bible available at )

MEMORY VERSE "Y shua, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us, 1 Corinthians 5:7 LEARNING ACTIVITY The holy day of Passover is a special worship time that celebrates the rescue of the Hebrew people from the harsh slavery of Pharaoh. Passover recalls how ten horrible plagues pronounced judgment upon Egypt and pagan gods. On the night of the final plague, the Israelites were commanded by the Almighty to take the blood of a lamb and smear it on the doorposts of their home. The death of the firstborn would pass over the houses marked with blood. This is a picture of the Lamb of YHWH, the Messiah Y shua, whose blood would be shed to cover the sins of the world on a future Passover. Since that dark night in Egypt, the Jewish people have faithfully kept the Passover. John 2:13 shows that from His childhood, the Savior celebrated the festival too. Much can be learned as you follow the Savior s example and celebrate Passover. For this is why you were called; because Messiah also suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow his steps, 1 Peter 2:21. In the Gospels, the disciples participate in the Last Supper, which was actually a Passover teaching. Even today, the Passover story is told through an interactive meal called a Seder. The Seder menu includes bitter herbs, unleavened bread called matzah, wine, and lamb. These foods have specific meaning to give the message of slavery, freedom, sin, and blood sacrifice. The meal is then followed by a 7 day fast of all food products that contain yeast. That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast, Exodus 12:8. The most important part of the Passover is the blood of the Lamb. The Hebrews would have died if they didn t put the blood on their door posts. In Hebrew the word for blood is dahm. The Passover Lamb saved the Hebrews from slavery and bondage thousands of years ago. The blood of the Passover Lamb Y shua still saves today. Like the ancient Israelites we need take the dahm / blood and apply it to our doorposts. Passover is about more than a historical event or a special meal. Pesach tells us how Y shua s blood protects us from sin and death.

Consider what the blood or dahm of Y shua does for us The blood pays for our sins so we don't perish. Matthew 26:28, "For this is My dahm of the renewed covenant that is shed for many for the forgiveness of sins." The blood bought us. Acts 20:28, "Take heed to yourselves, and to all the flock, to feed the people of Israel in YHWH, which He has purchased with His own dahm." The blood gives us forgiveness. Colossians 1:14, "In whom we have redemption through His dahm, even the forgiveness of sins." The blood brought us all into a relationship with YHWH that we didn't have before. Ephesians 2:11-16, "Therefore remember, that you being in times past gentiles in the flesh, that at that time you were without Moshiach, being aliens from the Commonwealth of Israel, as strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without YHWH in the world: But now in Messiah Y'shua you who sometimes were far off are made near by the dahm of Messiah. Part of the first Passover was the command to retell the story of how the death angel passed over the homes that had the blood of the Lamb. One way we retell this story is to have a Seder meal. Another way to do this would be to simply tell others about the Passover. In the sheet provided write a letter or draw a picture to a friend about Passover. Make sure to include the plagues, the command to leave Egypt to worship YHWH, and how the death angel spared the Israelite people who put their faith in YHWH. WALK THE TALK As we read this Torah portion we are reminded about the power of YHWH to rescue Israel from the slavery of Egypt and the wicker ruler Pharaoh. We also remember that it was during this time that our Messiah Y shua gave His life to be the Passover Lamb. Read Exodus 12:1-24 in your Bible and then answer the following questions

1. What kind of animal did the Israelite people have to sacrifice to YHWH? 2. What was required of the animal in order for it to be an acceptable sacrifice? 3. What did the people have to do with the blood in order to receive protection? 4. What were they being protected from? Notice that the people were to remember the miracles of YHWH and the exodus by having a special meal once a year. This is called the Passover seder. The Seder is a service that we have together as we eat the unleavened bread or matzah and the bitter herbs. The Seder is a type of party that we have once a year to remember how the death angel passed-over the Israelites because they trusted in the blood of the lamb. Now, turn to a few other verses and see how Y shua is our Passover Lamb. Let s start by reading John 1:29; Isaiah 53:7. Who is being described and what is being said about him? Y shua is the lamb of YHWH that was given for the world. He is the Passover Lamb. Now turn to Romans 10:8-10. What is needed for people to be "protected" by Y shua? Messiah also kept the Passover. Matthew 26:18-20, And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master said, My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at the house with my disciples. And the disciples did as Y shua had appointed them; and they made ready the Passover. Now when the even was come He sat down with the twelve. Matthew 26:26-28, And as they were eating, Y shua took matzah/bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Y shua gave his life and was crucified at Passover. And from reading these verses we see that not only is Y shua the Passover Lamb but He also celebrated Passover. He ate matzah and had the wine. If Y shua celebrated Passover then so should we! Memorize this week s verse as you prepare for the upcoming Passover. "Y shua, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us, 1 Corinthians 5:7 TORAH TALK What does the name of this portion mean? What is the main subject of this portion? Activity Ideas Use popsicle sticks to create a door post and have the children use red paint to cover the door posts like blood. You could also put red construction paper around your door frames. Make a new moon, Rosh Chodesh, craft. Draw and label the different phases of the moon. Make a Seder plate using a paper plate and small cupcake papers. Glue the cupcake papers around the plate and put pictures of the different elements of the Seder in them. Punch a hole in the top and use a piece of yarn to hang it in your house. In Exodus 13:9 the Scriptures mention it shall be a sign to you on your hand. Trace your hand on a piece of paper. Cut it out and then glue it to a piece of construction paper. Write this week s memory verse on the paper. Using index cards, drawer a picture of each plague on a separate card. Try to put them in the order they happened. To see what it was like to have total darkness go into a closet, shut the door, and make sure all the lights are off. Now imagine this happening for several days. Use cotton balls to make a craft that resembles a lamb. Draw a big sideways oval and glue the cotton balls in the oval. Then draw legs and a head for your lamb. Write the memory verse on your craft paper. Gather the necessary items to have a practice Seder at your house. Use unleavened bread, juice, and bitter herbs. Read through Exodus and Matthew 26 to have a special Seder.
